  • Protogyny is known in 14 families of fishes, 11 of which inhabit coral reef areas. The wrasses (Labridae) comprise a large and well-known family of coral reef fishes that exhibit sequential hermaphroditism. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the allomeoic growth patterns of several morphometric characteristics, including those used commonly to distinguish sexes of cocktail wrasse, pteragogus aurigarius (Richardson) and to assess their effectiveness in discriminating between males and females.   • The Tsushima Current has been known to branch out from the Kuroshio west of Kyushu and to flow north to the Korea Strait. Then, it has to flow across the isobaths and so needs some driving forces. As the forces, sea level difference between the Korea and Tsugaru Straits, Reynolds stress west of Kyushu and density differences have been suggested, In this paper, their roles have been numerically studied in the barotropic case. Model results show that the Tsushima Current is possible without any above force. The flows just follow isobaths over the East China Sea. They seem to be driven by their own dynamics without any external force. The mechanism is just like outflows from a gap. Model results also show that the flows in this area could be significantly affected by the external forces such as Reynolds Stress. Then the dynamics and flows in real ocean might be complicated. However, the barotropic study tells us that the Tsuahima Currents is basically driven by geostrophic adjustment.

A Study on a Relation of Food Ecology to Obesity Index of 5th Grade Children in Cheju City (II) -Obesity Index of Children and Food Habit of their Mothers- (제주시내 초등학교 5학년 어린이의 체격과 식생태에 관한 조사연구 (II) -어린이의 체격과 어머니의 식습관-)

  • This survey was conducted to investigate the relation of children's obesity index to their mothers' food habit during the October in 1995. The survey covered a total of 492 mothers whose children were in the fifth grade of elementary schools in Cheju City area. The results are summarized as follows: 1.The surveyed children's average WLI(Weight-Length Index) is 107.08. WLI shows that 16.1% of them are overweight, 16.1% obese and 49.8% ideally weighted. The mothers' average BMI(Body Mass Index) is 22.4. 21.8% of them are underweight and 69.4% normal. The children's obesity index is significantly correlated to their fathers', but not significant to their mothers'. 2.As to the food habit I (balance of nutrients intake), 58.4% of the mothers have 'excellent' or 'good' food habit and the mean score is 14.95 out of maximum possible score 24.0. Concerning to the food habit II (intake of sugar, fat and salt etc.), 87.4% of mothers have 'good' or 'fair' food habit and the mean score of is 13.34 out of maximum (possible score) 20.0. The mothers' food habit I and II, as a whole, have no significant effect on the children's obesity index, but in some items the significant relations are founded. The children's chesty index is significantly related to the intake of eggs (P<0.05) and pan-broiled or fried foods (P<0.05). The amount of mothers' food intake is significantly relevant to their obesity index (P<0.001), but not significantly to their children's. The food habit of mothers who have taken midnight snack almost every day are significantly related to their children's chesty index (P<0.05). The findings of the study emphasize the importance of the nutrition education to ensure health and better physical fitness for children and their mothers.

Adsorption and residues of EPN in the soil of Cheju Island (제주도 토양에서 EPN의 용탈과 잔류)

  • The adsorption and leaching of organophosphorus pesticide, EPN (O-ethyl-O-4 -nitrophenyl phenyl phosphonothioate) were investigated in Namwon soil(black volcanic soil), Aewol soil(very dark brown volcanic soil) and Mureung soil(dark brown nonvolcanic soil) in Cheju Island. The residue of EPN was surveyed on coastal environment of Cheju in Aug. 1996. The organic matter of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 19.8, 6.2 and 2.4%, respectively. The cation exchange capacity of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 24.8, 13.0 and 9.5 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, k value, was 89.4, 26.9 and 9.25 for Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil, respectively. The k value of Namwon soil with very high organic matter content and cation exchange capacity was the highest for Aewol soil and Mureung soil. The Freundlich constant, 1/n, show a high correlation with organic matter content, i.e. it is less than unity for organic matter rich soil of Namwon soil and greater than unity for organic matter poor soil of Mureung soil. The leaching of EPN was slower for Namwon soil with high k values, and faster for Mureung soil with low k values. The results of the study was demonstrated the potential of pollution for EPN have little leached into soil environment. EPN was not detected in seawater and sediment in the coastal environment in Cheju Island. EPN used in the farm on tile Cheju island were not residued in the coastal environment.

  • Total suspended particles were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea during the period of March 11 .sim. April 19, 1994. Concentrations of non-sea salt(nss) ions were higher than those measured at clean marine areas in Japan and other background marine areas in the world. Especially, nss sulfate concentration is compatable to thoes measured at Seoul. It is suggested that most nss sulfate concentration is originated from anthropogenic sources. Nss sulfate concentration shows strong correlation with ammonium and nss potassium concentrations while shows no a pparent correlation with nitrate and nss calcium concentrations. Nss calcium concentrations shows strong correlation with nss potassium and mss magnesium concentrations. It is deduced that nss potassium has two origins, one anthropogenic, the other crustal. Backward trajectory analysis results show the trajectories of air parcel during the measurement period were mostly originated from China. It is shown that cases of high nss sulfate with high nss calcium can occur when an air parcel originated from arid and semi-arid regions of morthwestern China or Mongolia passes through northeastern China.

In Vivo Measurement of Plant Vitality by the Fluorescence Transient

  • The chlorophyll fluorescence combined with the O-J-I-P transients were examined in the leaves of the crinum plants (Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum BAK.), in order to satisfy the demand for rapid in vivo measurement of vitality, and to apply easily to approach questions of economical interest concerning the plant vitality. The photosynthetic efficiency, Fv/Fm, of crinum plants dramatically decreased depending on temperature drop in winter. In summer, the Fv/Fm values was lower in day time than at dawn and night, suggesting that photosynthetic efficiency is chronically photoinhibited in day time. In winter, there was no prominent diurnal fluctuations of Fv/Fm values. However, based on the O-J-I-P transient, PI$\_$NO/ and SFI$\_$NO/ dramatically increased at noon in summer, and $\psi$o/(1-$\psi$o) diurnally fluctuated in winter. These results indicated that vitality indexes such as PI$\_$NO/, SFI$\_$NO/ and $\psi$o/(1-$\psi$o) can be used as the indicators for in vivo measurement of environmental stresses.

  • The T sergenti DNA fragments used as probes of KTS1(2.4kb) and KTS3(1.5kb) were labeled with digoxigenin-11-dUTP for the Southern hybridization. T sergenti DNAs from different geographic locations(Korea; Chonbuk, Kyungbuk, Chungnam, Kangwon, Cheju island, Japan; Shintoku, Shintoku 9209, Shintoku 9201, Shintoku 9202, Shintoku 9102) which had been digested with Pst I and EcoR I were probed by the digoxigenin-11-dUTP-labeled KTS1 and KTS3. As the results, the samples from Chonbuk, Kyungbuk, Cheju island in Korea and Shintoku, Shintoku 9209, Shintoku 9201, Shintoku 9102 in Japan were positively reacted, but the others from the other locations not reacted. In the comformation test of T sergenti DNA from different geographic locations, all of the samples were positively detected by PCR amplification.

In Vivo Measurement of Plant Vitality by the Fluorescence Transient

Studies on Eurytrema Pancreaticum [I] Infection rate and pathological changes (췌질(膵蛭)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) [I] 감염율(感染率)과 병변(病變))

  • Researches to determine the infectious status on the pancreatic fluke, Eurytrema pancreaticum(Janson 1889) Looss, 1907, were made into several slaughter hauses at four different districts through seven years from 1963 to 1969. The infection rate showed 2962 positive of 5974 heads (49.6%) of cattle at the Seoul first slaughter hause in Seoul, 881 positive of 1021 heads (86.3%) in Cheju, and six(6) positive of 56 heads (11.1%) at Suwon, 58 positive of 306 heads(19.0%)at Joenju. The infection rate 53.1%, (2907 positive heads of total 7357 heads exammed) is the representative infection rate at the cattle eurytremiasis in Korea. It showed little variation through a year and was increased as compared with those of the past period, from 1915 to 1945. Fecal examinations in order to find out the local distribution of the pancreatic fluke were conducted on cattle, sheep, and goats raised in four districts, showing two(2) of 269 heads (0.7%) in Kyonggi-do, 41 of 212 heads (19.3%) in Cheju-do, and negative in both Chungnam-do and Joenbuk-do. When an artificial infection wss performed on rabbits and goats with metacercaria of the pancreatic fluke, Parenchyma of their pancreas were degenerated and the ducts were dilated. When cattle and sheep were infected naturally, the pancreatic ducts were also dilated, the wall was thickened, and adenomatous and epithelial hyperplasia was appeared. The conclusion, putting the foregoing pathological changes, has been arrived at chronic hyperplastic pancreatitis in the eurytremiasis of cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits.

  • The effects of protein kinase C inhibitors, chelerythrine and bisindolylmaleimide I, on acetylcholine activated $K^{+}$ currents ( $I_{KACh}$) were examined in atrial myocytes of mice using patch clamp technique. Chelerythrine and bisindolylmaleimide I inhibited $I_{KACh}$ in reversible and dose-dependent manners. Half maximal effective concentrations were 0.49 $\pm$ 0.01 $\mu$M for chelerythrine and 98.69 $\pm$ 12.68 nM for bisindolylmaleimide I.(omitted)
