This study was conducted for the efficient utilization of a scoria, which is abundantly found in Cheju island, as adsorbent and the scoria was examined for its performance in clarification of adsorption of heavy metal ions. The order in heavy metal ions adsorbed on scoria was; Pb+>Cd^{2+}$>Cu^{2+}$>Ag^+$>Co^{2+}$>Zn^{2+}$>Cr^{3+}$>Cr^{6+}$. This tendency was relatively consistent with the decreasing order of radius of hydrated metal ion. Also, the smaller scoria size and the larger amounts of scoria showed higher removal efficiency for heavy metal ions. The same scoria size showed more effective removal efficiency for heavy metal ions at lower initial concentration than at higher initial concentration. The adsorption abilities of original scoria and chemically treated scoria were compared. Adsorption isotherm of scoria was generally obeyed to Freundlich formula than langmuir formula and Freundlich constant, than was obtained in the range of 0.2~0.4.
We evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of scoria on growth performances and apparent protein digestibility in juvenile parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus and olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In experiment, parrot fish at initial average weight of $7.6{\pm}0.01g(mean{\pm}SD)$ were divided into 9 groups(three groups per dietary treatment) and fed one of three isonitrogenous diets which contained 0%, 1% and 2% of scoria, respectively. Experiment was conducted with juvenile olive flounder to demonstrate the improved apparent digestibility of protein found in the experiment. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain different levels of scoria: Diet 1(control), 0% scoria; diet 2, 1% scoria; diet 3, 2% scoria; diet 4, 3% scoria; and diet 5, 4% scoria. After 9 weeks of feeding trial(Exp), no significant differences were observed on growth performances between Scoria 2% and the control group. However, the growth was significantly lower in scoria 1% compared to that of the control group. Hematological parameters were not affected by the supplementation of scoria. Interestingly, apparent protein digestibility was improved by dietary supplementation of scoria both in parrot fish and olive flounder. The findings suggest that dietary supplementation of 2-3% scoria is optimum levels in order to improve the protein digestibility in the diets for juvenile parrot fish and olive flounder.

Scoria is a bomb-sized, generally vesicular pyroclast that is red or black in color and light in weight. In this study, scoria from Cheju was examined for the use as a sorbent. It is composed of plagioclase, olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, and glass, with an average composition of 49.84% SiO$_2$, 14.07% A1$_2$O$_3$, End 9.14% Fe$_2$O$_3$. Studies on kinetic isotherm sorption of Zn(II) onto scoria under various parameters such as initial zinc concentration, particle size, and adsorbent/adsorbate ratio were carried out using an agitated batch. The results suggest that the smaller scoria size and the larger adsorbent/adsorbate ratio produce the higher degree of Zn(II) removal. More effective removal also appears at lower initial Zn concentration. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seems to be mainly controlled by cation exchange. Studies on equilibrium isotherm sorption of other heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd) onto scoria were also conducted and compared with those onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and non-organic matter scoria (NOS), The results suggest that the Cheju scoria has the slightly higher sorption capability than PAC and NOS, and the order of the effective sorption onto scoria and PAC is Pb > Cu > Zn > Cd. The monometal sorption onto scoria is more stronger than the competitive sorption.
The main purpose of these studies were to clarify differences in Cheju - scoria and other solid media on quantity and quality of cherry tomatoes and on shift of component of the nutrient solution, and to use Practically Cheju-scoria as an excellent solid culture medium. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Among scoria plots, the rates of dry weights, fruits and their sugar-acid ratio were higher in the plot that was drained well with deep flow for one hour once a day. 2. Fresh fruit weights were lighter in rockwool and deep flow technique, but larger in scoria, Hyugashi (artificial gravel, $\Phi$10-12mm) and perlite in moving to higher flower cluster. 3. The results of analysis on microelement among solution components showed decrease of concentrations of P and K in the period of growth and development. 4. Yields and brix of cherry tomato showed a tendency to increase in rockwool and Hyugashi than anothers. 5. The concentration of fertilizer base was increased in general solution culture. Transpiration and absorption were similar in scoria plot and other media. 6. More studies of the Cheju-scoria development is required in order to use it as a solid medium for solution culture.
Fe compounds in scoria as distributed in the south-western area of Jeju Island were investigated using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and $^{57}Fe$$M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples were prepared from four parasite volcanoes. It was found that these samples are typical basalt comprised of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, Fe, and silicate minerals. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra showed doublets for olivine, pyroxene, and ilmenite as well as sextets for hematite and magnetite. The valence state of Fe is chiefly a 3+ charge state with a slight 2+ charge state. It is expected that these results will add to the body of information related to the formation mechanisms of Jeju Island.
The removal characteristics of ethyl acetate and 2-butanol were investigated in a bench-scale down-flow biofilter packed with Jeju scoria medium. Various inlet concentrations and gas flow rates were tested. The adaptation times of microorganisms to the change of the influent concentration of ethyl acetate and 2-butanol gas were found to be about 3 days. At the inlet concentration of 300 ppmv and empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 15 see, the removal efficiencies of the biofilter for ethyl acetate and 2-butanol were above $99.9\%$. The maximum removal capacity of the biofilter for ethyl acetate was $316-318\;g/m^3/h$ and that for 2-butanol was $245-251\;g/m^3/h$. Overall, the removal capacity of the biofilter for ethyl acetate was $50-70\;g/m^3/h$ larger than that for 2-butanol. During the operation of 65 days, the pressure drop through the biofilter column was maintained below $13\;mmH_{2}O/m$. Although the pH in the drain water decreased from 7.2 to 5.0, the pH drop did not affect the removal of the gases. From the above results, the biofilter using Jeju scoria as a packing material seemed to very effectively treat waste gases such as ethyl acetate and 2-butanol.
This study aimed at improving the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of HA. In this study, the Degradation of Humic Acid using Jeju Scoria Coated with $WO_3/TiO_2$ in the presence of UV irradiation was investigated as a function of different experimental condition : photocatalyst dosage, $Ca^{2+}\;and\;HCO_{3}_{-}$ addition and pH of the solution. Photodegradation efficiency increased with increasing photocatalyst dosage, the optimum catalyst dosage is 2.5 g/L and Photodegradation efficiency is maximized to $WO_3/TiO_2=3/7$. This indicates that $WO_3$ retains a much higher Lewis surface acidity than $TiO_2,\;and\;WO_3$ has a higher affinity for chemical species having unpaired electrons. The addtion of cation($Ca^{2+}$) in water increased the photodegradaion efficiency. But the addtion of $HCO_{3}^{-}$ ion in water decreased a photodegradation efficiency. Photodegradation efficiency increased with decreasing pH < pzc, the electrostatic repulsion between the HA and the surface of $TiO_2$ decreased.
It have been investigated the measured results of the XRF, the X-ray diffractometry and $^{57}Fe\;M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum for scoria samples which are distributed throughout different areas in Mid-mountain Area of Jeju island. We consider that the scoria samples are chiefly made of silicate minerals, like $SiO_2$, others silicate minerals and iron oxides minerals. We study that it's materiel is consisted of olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, hematite and magnetite. Iron compounds in that are $Fe^{2+}$ of olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite and $Fe^{3+}$ of hematite, magnetite et al. The major Fe fractions of the scoria samples are 51.77 wt%, so Fe fractions of the scoria samples are almost 3+ charge state with a little of the 2+ charge state.

In the study application of volcanic scoria concrete to artificial reefs is investigated. Volcanic scoria is a natural volcanic product that shows light weight, mil/i-porous, and far-infrared irradiation characteristics. The properties of volcanic scoria concrete using Jeju scoria aggregate are evaluated by conducting a comprehensive series of tests on strength and void ratio. It is concluded that the volcanic scoria concrete has the sufficient strength of 4MPa-13MPa and adequate void ratio of $12\%-35\%$ to be accepted as artificial reef concrete. The field experiments are performed through observation by scuba diver's at the Seogwipo coast. Porous specimen and plane concrete specimen are prepared for comparison purposes. Seasonal changes of soft coral on the two series of test specimens were have been observed from Apr. 9, 2004 to Mar. 18, 2005. The soft coral is well grown on the porous specimen however there are no significant changes on the conventional plain concrete specimen. Thus it is concluded that the volcanic scoria concrete is highly suitable as artificial reef concrete.
Morphometric parameters such as cone height, cone height/width ratio($H_{co}$/$W_{co}$), cone height/difference between cone width and crater width ratio($H_{co}$/$W_{co-cr}$) and slope angle are measured to investigate the rates of slope development of scoria cones in Cheju Island. The parameters systematically decrease with increasing age of scoria cones, suggesting that comparative morphology of scoria cones is a useful age indicator. Cone age is most highly correlated with $H_{co}$/($W_{co-cr}$ or average slope angle because summit craters are infilled and eventually removed by erosional processes. The average slope angle is estimated as $\theta_{ave}$= $tan^{-1}$/〔2.$H_{co}$/$W_{co-cr}$〕. Cheju Island was formed through four eruptive stages during Pleistocene. The youngest cones of stage 4(0.1~0.025Ma) have a mean average slope angle of 23.6$\pm$1.7$^{\circ}$, whereas stage 3(0.3~0.1Ma) and stage 2(0.6~0.3Ma) cones have mean values of 18.9$\pm$$1.7^{\circ}C$and 12.6$\pm$$1.9^{\circ}C$, respectively.
