Mechanical and corrosion property of duplex stainless steel weldments made by the GTAW and SMAW process were studied. Fracture toughness, general and local corrosion resistance of GTAW and SMAW weldments were evaluated in terms of Charpy V notch impact test, anodic polarization diagram, pitting corrosion rate, respectively. SMA weld metal showed much lower impact toughness and higher ductile-brittle transition temperature than GTA weld metal. Fractographic and EDX analysis on fracture surface of SMA weld metal demonstrated the existence of (Si, Ti), oxide in large amounts. Potentiodynamic anodic polarization diagram of GMA weld metal showed much lower passive current density than SMA weld metal in 4% $H_2/SO_4$ solution. And pitting corrosion rate test showed the same tendency. Relating the microstructure, chemistry and property, it can be concluded that GTA weld metal gives better toughness due to lower oxygen content, i.e. lower inclusion content, and better corrosion resistance due to higher Pitting Index(PI) than SMA weld metal.
Miniaturzed specimen technology permits mechanical bechanical behavior to be determined using a minimum volume of material. because it is almost impossible to sample the conventional specimen for the fracture toughness test without damage to the rotor. In addition, it is different to collect a large amount of actual turbine rotor steels. Hence seven kinds of specimen with different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at 630 .deg. C. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which was widely used for turbine rotor material. The relation between fracture toughness and DBTT was investigated The characteristics of minaturized impact speciments technique was discussed. Finally, the estimating method of fracture toughness using a single impact specimen was introduced.
In order to understand the properties of high heat input welds made by electro gas welding, two kinds of low temperature steel were welded. Welding heat inputs were controlled by width of root gap and ranged from 118 to 143kJ/cm. Chemical composition and micro-structural analysis were performed. To understand low temperature impact properties, Charpy impact test was conducted at several temperatures. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Grain size of weld metal and heat affected zone was increased with an increase in welding heat input. 2) Impact test values at fusion line were severely fluctuated regardless of base metals, showing enormous difference among the values at the same test temperature.
Microstructures and mechanical properties of weldments were studied for EH36 TMCP higher-strength hull steel with electrogas welding jprocess. In case of a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel for large heat input welding process, the Microstructures of HAZ shows more narrow width of grain coarsed region than that of conventional EH36 TMCP weldments, the amount of acicular ferrite, which is beneficial to impact toughness, increased while the amount of grain-boundary ferrite decreased. Charpy V-notched impact tests show that a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel weldment satisfies all the requirement of specifications, especially at the fusion line +2mm where the conventional EH36 TMCP steel fails to exceed the requirement.
This study carried out a series of experiments involving impact tests (Drop weight type & Charpy type with a standard specimen and newly designed I-type specimen), hardness tests, and fracture surface observations of French-made roll shell steel (F), abnormal roll shell steel (M), reheated roll shell steel (R), and S25C steel under heat treatment conditions ($570^{\circ}C$) to analyze the cause and prevent the roll shell steel's brittle fracture and its damage.
This study involved a series of experiments, which included impact tests (drop weight & Charpy) and hardness tests under various heat treatment conditions, followed by fractography observations of Normal Roll Shell steel (NRS), Abnormal Roll Shell steel (ARS), and S25C steel, in order to analyze the cause of brittle fracture and damages in Roll Shell steel. The optimal tempering temperature was characterized for ARS and NRS.
The mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rate fracture toughness of permanent mould cast austempered gray cast iron(AGI) were compared to those of sand cast AGI. Specimens prepared for tensile, impact and fatigue test were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempered at $270^{\circ}C$, $320^{\circ}C$, $370^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The strength, impact and fatigue crack propagation behavior of permanent mold cast AGI were found to be superior to those of sand cast AGI. Maximum values in tensile strength, BHN, Charpy impact energy, were obtained at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. Samely, the slowest fatigue crack growth rate was appeared at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. But ductility of AGI was not improved by permanent mould casting.
Fracture toughness of five different reactor pressure vessel steels was characterized in the transition temperature region by the ASTM E1921-97 standard method using Charpy-sized small specimens. T he predominant fracture mode of the tested steels was transgranular cleavage in the test conditions. A statistical analysis based on the Weibull distribution was applied to the interpretation of the scattered fracture toughness data. The size-dependence of the measured fracture toughness values was also well predicted by means of the Weibull probabilistic analysis. The measured fracture toughness transition curves followed the temperature-dependence of the ASTM master curve within the expected scatter bands. Therefore, the fracture toughness characteristics in the transition region could be described by a single parameter, so-called the reference temperature (T。), for a given steel. The determined reference temperatures of the tested materials could not be correlated with the conventional index temperatures from Charpy impact tests.
Excellent environmental durability and handy installation procedure as well as high specific strength and stiffness have introduced fiber-reinforced polymeric composite materials into the civil and architectural engineering field. This study presents the considerably enhanced strength characteristics of the mortal beams by being reinforced with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets(CFS). Three point bending and Charpy impact tests were performed on both of bare and reinforced mortar specimens. The influences of length, and the number of reinforcing plies were investigated. Strength reduction due to pre-existent notch was lessened dramatically. The acoustic emission(AE) measurement revealed the progressive damage process in reinforced specimens.
A study has been made on the correlation between ultrasonic attenuation and mechanical properties with different prior austenite grain size. It was found that ultrasonic attenuation is increased with increasing grain size, decreasing yield strength and increasing charpy impact energy value for ALSI 4140 steel.
