Nondestructive Characterization and In-situ Monitoring of Corrosion Degradation by Backward Radiated Ultrasound

  • Since the degradation caused by corrosion is restricted to the surface of materials, conventional ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods based on ultrasonic bulk waves are not applicable to characterization of the corrosion degradation. To take care of this difficulty, a new nondestructive evaluation method that uses ultrasonic backward radiation has been proposed recently. This paper explores the potential of this newly developed method for nondestructive characterization and in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation. Specifically, backward radiated ultrasounds from aged thermo-mechanically controlled process (TMCP) steel specimens by corrosion fatigue were measured and their characteristics were correlated to those of the aged specimens. The excellent correlation observed in the present study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as an effective tool for nondestructive characterization of corrosion degradation. In addition, the potential of the backward radiated ultrasound to in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation is under current investigation.

  • Scaling rules for TFT application devices have led to the necessity of ultra thin dielectric films and high-k dielectric layers. In this paper, The advantages of high concentration of nitrogen in silicon oxide layer deposited by using $N_2O$ in Inductively Coupled Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (ICP-CVD) is investigated using X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). We have reported about Ellipsometric measurement, Capacitance - Voltage characterization and processing conditions.

An Effective Method for Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Characterization High School (특성화고교에서의 효과적인 수학교육 방안)

  • Many mathematics teachers in characterization high schools have been troubled to teach students because most of the students have weak interests in mathematics and they are also lack of preliminary mathematical knowledges. Currently many of mathematics teachers in such schools teach students using worksheets owing to the situation that proper textbooks for the students are not available. In this study, we referred to Chevallard's didactic transposition theory based on Brousseau's theory of didactical situations for mathematical teaching and learning. Our lessons utilizing worksheets necessarily entail encouragement of students' self-directed activities, active interactions, and checking the degree of accomplishment of the goal for each class. Through this study, we recognized that the elaborate worksheets considering students' level, follow-up auxiliary materials that help students learn new mathematical notions through simple repetition if necessary, continuous interactions in class, and students' mathematical activities in realistic situations were all very important factors for effective mathematical teaching and learning.

The Analysis of the Change Process of Fisheries Track's High School Curriculum: Focusing on the 5th-7th Revised National Curriculum (수산계열 고등학교 교육과정의 변천과정 분석 - 제5차에서 제7차 교육과정을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was attempted to analyze the change process of fisheries track's high school curriculum related with the 5th-7th revised national curriculum. To accomplish this goal, the nature and goals of fisheries track's high school were reviewed. First, it was found that the fisheries track's high school was classified into three groups; high school for special goal, characterization, and industry. And the goal of fisheries track's high school was designated to harmonize the general education and vocational education in high school goal. Second, the legal basis and system of national curriculum in fisheries track's high school were discussed. The legal basis of national curriculum in fisheries track's high school was prescribed to the 'Elementary and Secondary Education Act'. The system of national curriculum was composed the general guideline and subjects. Third, the change process of fisheries track's high school national curriculum was discussed. The system of decision, general guideline, and subjects in fisheries track's high school national curriculum were seemingly to be studied on the basis of the autonomy or diversity. In conclusion, the concrete content of fisheries track's high school national curriculum was not changed compared to the 5th-7th revised curriculum.

  • Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin-layer (HIT) solar cells are currently an important subject in industrial trends for thinner solar cell wafers due to the low-temperature of production processes, which is around $200^{\circ}C$, and due to their high-efficiency of 24.7%, as reported by the Panasonic (Sanyo) group. The use of thinner wafers and the enhancement of cell performance with fabrication at low temperature have been special interests of the researchers. The fundamental understanding of the band bending structures, choice of materials, fabrication process, and nano-scale characterization methods to provide necessary understanding of the interface passivation mechanisms, emitter properties, and requirements for transparent oxide conductive layers is presented in this review. This information should be used for the performance characterization of the developing technologies for HIT solar cells.

  • Recombinant erythropoietins (EPOs) are an important class of biotherapeutics that stimulate red blood cell production. The quality, safety, and potency of EPO variants are determined largely by their glycosylation, which makes up nearly half their mass. Thus, detailed glycomic analyses are important to assess biotherapeutic quality and establish the equivalency of biosimilar EPOs now coming to market. High-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) has recently emerged as the premier tool for glycan analysis in EPOs. Using the accurate mass measurements provided by high-resolution MS, the compositions of even large, complex glycans can easily be determined. When combined with a nano-LC separation, differentiation of structural isomers also becomes a possibility. These components, together, provide a comprehensive picture of biotherapeutic glycosylation. In this review, we provide an overview of MS-based analytical platform for glycomic characterization of EPO biotherapeutics and biosimilars.

Optimization of Barium Titanate Slip for Tape Casting Using Design of Experiments

  • A full-factorial design of experiments with three input factors and two levels for each factor including center points was utilized for the preparation and characterization of twelve types of $BaTiO_3$ slips for tape casting. Ceramic powders with different particle sizes, different milling methods such as high energy milling and conventional ball milling, and two types of dispersant with different polymeric species were chosen as input factors in order to investigate their effects on slip and on green tape properties. Tape casting, a small rectangular-shaped K-square preparation, characterization and quantitative data analysis using statistical software were followed. Ceramic powder was the most significant among three input factors for the output responses of slip viscosity and green tape density, showing more favorable results with large particles than with very fine ones. In addition, high energy milling for only 30 min was more efficient than 24h of conventional ball milling in terms of powder dispersion and milling. The optimum condition based on the experimental results was a slip exposed to high energy milling with large ceramic particles along with a methylethyl acetate dispersant.

Cloning and Characterization of a Bifunctional Cellulase-Chitosanase Gene from Bacillus lichenformis NBL420

  • A 1,3 kb cellulase gene encoding novel bifunctional cellulase-chitosanase activity was cloned from biopolymer-producing alkali-tolerant B. lichenformis NBL420 in E. coli. A recombinant cellulase-chitosanase, named CelA, was expressed and purified to homogeneity. The activity staining and the enzymatic characterization of the purified CeIA revealed bifunctional activities on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and glycol-chitosan. The similar characteristics of the enzymatic activities at the optimum pH, optimum temperature, and thermostability Indicated that CelA used a common catalytic domain with relaxed substrate specificity. A comparison of the deduced amino acids in the N-terminal region revealed that the mature CelA had a high homology with the previously identified bifunctional cellulase-chitosanase of Myxobacter sp. AL- 1.
