  • The visibility range is defined from where one can see, which can be changed by the character sizes and illuminances and so on, which of one-hundred and twelve students are measured for three illuminances and three character sizes in this paper. In determining the character sizes and illuminances, the visibility range can be an important data. Functions are proposed whose independent variable is illuminance and whose dependent variable is visibility range in order to predict the visibility range of unmeasured illuminances. The fractional functions are used for three character sizes because the visibility range is invariant according to illuminance. There are three parameters to be determined - k, m, n, which are selected based on the measured visibility ranges. Because the visibility ranges of three character sizes are measured, three k's can be calculated. In this paper the case of minimum variance of three k's is selected, and three parameters - k,m,n- of that case is selected. The three functions according to three character sizes are proposed. The small differences between the measured data and the postulated functions verifies the accuracy of the functions.

  • A design guideline about legible and preferred Korean character sizes is necessary to provide better visual information in a group-view display. The present study examined the legible and preferred Korean character sizes by an experiment employing eight background-font colors and four representative font types (Gulim, Ming, Gothic, and Batang). Forty subjects (male : 20 and female : 20) in their 20s were recruited for the experiment. The legible and preferred sizes were determined based on the method of limits, one of psychological approaches. The results showed that the legible and preferred sizes increased as the contrast between background and font colors decreased. In addition, the legible and preferred sizes for Gulim were significantly smaller than those of the other font types. It is expected that the present study may contribute to providing better visual information in a group view display.

  • The visibility range is defined from where one can see. And it can be changed by illuminance, the character size, and eyesight and so on. In this paper the visibility range of 120 students is measured for 4 character sizes and 3 illuminations in a classroom. In order to forecast the visibility range of unmeasured data, using least square approximation theory, functions whose independent variable is illuminance and whose dependent variable is the visibility range is proposed. Because the visibility range is invariant according to illuminance, common logarithmic functions for 4 character sizes are used. The small difference between the postulated functions and the measured data verifies the accuracy of the functions.

  • Hangeul wordprocessor, workstation and I/O device for telematic service are requiring many kinds of characters with various attributes such as size and font. In this paper, we survey computer algorithm that have been studied to transform(reduction, enlargement) built-in character patterns into character patterns with different sizes. Also, evaluation cirteria for such algorithms are mentioned.

  • This study has developed a new system of character generator which is able to display more thats 14,364 different Korean characters by the 24 fundamental input elements. That is. in this system, all of the Korean characters are fomalized into 30 kinds of character forms (each having 70-980 characters), from which six form featuares are detacted to control and combine the fundamental input elements at their proper sizes and positions in a character frame. The device is very simple and all of the Korean characters can be displayed on CRT by the operation of only 24 input keys in good character quality.

  • Due to the development of artificial intelligence and image recognition technology that play important roles in the field of 4th industry, office automation systems and unmanned automation systems are rapidly spreading in human society. The proposed algorithm first finds the variances of the differences between the tile values constituting the learning characters and the experimental character and then recognizes the experimental character according to the distribution of the three learning characters with the smallest variances. In more detail, for 100 learning data characters and 10 experimental data characters, each character is defined as the number of black pixels belonging to 15 tile areas. For each character constituting the experimental data, the variance of the differences of the tile values of 100 learning data characters is obtained and then arranged in the ascending order. After that, three learning data characters with the minimum variance values are selected, and the final recognition result for the given experimental character is selected according to the distribution of these character types. Moreover, we compare the recognition result with the result made by a neural network of basic structure. It is confirmed that satisfactory recognition results are obtained through the processes that subdivide the learning characters and experiment characters into tile sizes and then select the recognition result using variances.

  • Safety and health related information for the proper use and handling of pesticides is usually printed on the surface of the pesticide products (bottle type or bag type) in the form of texts. But, the guidelines or standards for the appropriate presentation of the texts for the pesticide products are most vague or not practical. Thus, this study aimed to provide the preliminary guidelines for the text sizes based on the legibility experiments. Total twenty subjects from two age groups (young: n=10, old: n=10, five males and five females in each group) participated in the experiment. First, subjects read the text cards presented in the distance of 50cm from the eyes of the subjects. Eight different text card sets were prepared for different font type(thick gothic-type and fine gothic-type), thickness of font(plain and bold), and number of syllables (2 and 3 syllables). When subjects read the cards, the correctness of reading (correct or wrong) was recorded and the degree of discomfort (from 1: no discomfort at all to 4: can't read at all) was also evaluated for all the text sizes. Results showed that the character size should be 4 pt or larger for the young subjects to read at least one word correctly in all the text conditions. For the old subjects to read at least one word correctly, the character size should be five pt or larder. The average of the minimum character sizes for 100% correct answer is 6.1 pt for young subjects and 10.5 pt for old subjects, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a method of extracting connected strokes and characters in a Hangeul document image represented by a quadtree. Connected strokes are extracted by examining adjacency for each node of a black region to the side of east and south. Then, each character is extracted by the sizes and the relations of connected strokes. This is done by iterative vertical and horizontal manipulation. The result shows all characters are extracted in the same sequence as that of context with space and time efficiency.

  • A number of new DTV technologies have been introduced to provide crystal clear picture and enhanced sound. HDTV, in particular has four times resolution of conventional TV along with 16:9 aspect ratio. Also the introduction of the new technologies offered a valuable basis for character graphics which was only an assistant method to deliver visual images effectively. Various sizes of displays for different applications such as high definition TV and mobile multimedia services have created demands for additional features of character graphics including proper letter fonts, colors, moving effects as much. This article analyzes in what way the visual elements above can affect uses' visual perception. New CG formats designed for OSMU, one source multi use, are also suggested available to each media. For the research three groups of CG designers, art directors and productions/distribution groups are established according to production process by two Delphi surveys of TV production staff.
