  • The flow fields around an elliptic cylinder of axis ratio AR=2 adjacent to a free surface were investigated experimentally using a water channel. The main objective is to understand the effect of the free surface on the flow structure in the near-wake. The flow fields were measured by varying the depth of cylinder submergence, for each experimental condition, 350 velocity fields were measured using a single-frame PIV system and ensemble-averaged to obtain the spatial distribution of turbulent statics. For small submergence depths a large-scale eddy structure was observed in the near-wake, causing a reverse flow near the free surface, downstream of the cylinder. As the depth of cylinder submergence was increased, the flow speed in the gap region between the upper surface of the cylinder and the free surface increased and formed a substantial jet flow. The general flow structure of the elliptic cylinder is similar to previous results for a circular cylinder submerged near to a free surface. However, the width of the wake and the angle of downward deflection of the shear layer developed from the lower surface of the elliptic cylinder are smaller tan those for a circular cylinder.

  • The hydrological simulation program FORTRAN (HSPF) is a comprehensive watershed model that employs the hydraulic function table (FTABLE) (depth-area-volume-flow relationship) to represent the geometric and hydraulic properties of water bodies. The hydraulic representation of the HSPF model mainly depends on the accuracy of the FTABLES. These hydraulic representations determine the response time of water quality state variables and also control the scour, deposition, and transport of sediments in the water body. In general, FTABLES are automatically generated based on reach information such as mean depth, mean width, length, and slope along with a set of standard assumptions about the geometry and hydraulics of the channel, so these FTABLES are unable to accurately describe the geometry and hydraulic behavior of rivers and reservoirs. In order to compensate the weakness of HSPF for hydraulic modeling, we generated alternate method to improve the accuracy of FTABLES for rivers, using the surveyed cross sections and rating curves. The alternative method is based on the hydraulics simulated by HEC-RAS using the surveyed cross sections and rating curves, and it could significantly improve the accuracy of FTABLES. Although the alternate FTABLE greatly improved the hydraulic accuracy of the HSPF model, it had little effect on the hydrological simulation.

  • A study has been made on the hydrodynamic forces on and the motion response of a sliding block in a bay within the framework of linear potential theory. To simplify the problem, following assumptions are made : The configuration of the bay is a long channel with narrow width, constant depth and straight coastline. Incident waves are long compared to the depth. We applied matched asymptotic expansion techniques. The flued domain is subdivided into three regions ; ocean, bay entrance, bay regions. Boundary-vague problems are solved first in each region. Then unknown coefficients are determined by matching individual solutions at the intermediate region between two neighboring legions. It is found that the motion of the block is greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies, in particular at the quarter wavelength mode. We examined the mechanism of negative added mass, which results from the localized hydrodynamic resonance.

  • When the transverse bed slope ($S_t$) in channel bend is more than 0.1, it may produce undesirable results on the bed topography of the cross section. The linear relationship for $S_t$ results in zero or negative flow depths at the shallow $S_t$de of the cross section (i.e., inner bank). The exponential relationship for $S_t$ results in excessive flow depths at the deep side of the cross section (i.e., outer bank). This problem can be solved by combining the best features of both relationships described above. From the study, the linear relationship can be applied for the deep $S_t$de of the cross section. But the exponential relationship is suitable for the shallow side. Therefore, the new relationship of $S_t$ is clarified mathematically. A new mathematical model for bed topography is developed herein which takes accounts of the phase lag and the influence of the width to depth ratio. This model is used to analyze two sets of data: one from laboratory channel and the other from natural channel. A good agreement is found between the observed and the calculated bed topography based on the analysis of two sets of data.

  • This study investigates the evolution processes of alternate bars in the channel with bank stability by vegetation by laboratory experiment. Laboratory experiments are conducted to elucidate the behavior of alternate bars by the influence of riparian vegetation on the rivers with erodible banks. To control bank stability of the channel, the actual vegetation, alfalfa, is grown by adjusting the density of alfalfa on the flood plain. As the vegetation density increases in the flood plain, the bank erosion rates and the channel widening rates decrease and the bank stability increases. The alternate bars migrate slow downstream over time. Moreover, the bars in a channel with strong banks migrate rapidly, which is related with the aspect ratio, that is, width to depth ratio. The bar wavelength decrease with vegetation density. Our laboratory experiments show that the behavior of bars differ according to bank strength.

  • A good understanding of the interaction between flow, vegetation, and sediment is required for successful river restoration and sustainable flood management. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of available methods to determine flow resistance of natural rivers with vegetation, and discuss the influence of vegetation on erosion and sedimentation processes. Recently, significant advances have been made, but the effects of vegetation on flow and sediment dynamics are still not fully understood. Possible solutions to close the gaps in the current knowledge are suggested, with special focus directed to the determination of the interactive width between main channel and vegetated floodplains, the flow resistance of flexible vegetation with and without leaves, and the flow over submerged vegetation with low water depth.

  • We propose a self-aligned and double recessed technique for GaAs power MESFETs application. The gate length and the wide recess width are defined by a selective removal of the SiN layer using reactive ion etching(RIE) while the depth of the channel is defined by chemical etching of GaAs layers. The threshold voltages and the saturation drain voltage could be sucessfully controlled using this technique. The lateral-etched distance increases with the dry etching time and the source-drain breakdown voltage of MESFET increases up to about 30V at a pinch-off condition. The electrical characteristics of a MESFET with a gate length of 2 x10S0-6Tm and a source-gate spacing of 33 x10S0-6Tm show maximum transconductance of 120 mS/mm and saturation drain current density of 170-190mA/mm at a gate voltage of 0.8V.

  • SU-8 can be implemented as a mask for micro Abrasive Jet Machining (micro-AJM) process [1]. In this paper, we will evaluate the quality of micro grooving result on glass substrate by micro-AJM process which using SU-8 as a mask. It was evaluated on width and edge profile of the micro grooving. The result was having distortion compare with the master film used to pattern the SU-8 mask. The value of distortion with other properties which came along with it, such as depth and surface roughness, can be optimized in order to fabricate micro-channel for micro-fluidic application.

  • Flow boiling pressure drop in multi channels was experimently investigated. The multi channel has a width and depth of 0.45 and 0.2mm respectively, and comprises 15 parallel channels. The measured total pressure drop is expressed by the sum of the frictional pressure drop and acceleration pressure drop. In order to predict the total pressure drop, it is required to obtain the correct frictional pressure drop. The existing correlations to predict the frictional pressure were compared with measured frictional pressure drop. The new correlation was developed in the form of the Chisholm correlation. It was related to Chisholm Constant B as a function of Martinelli parameter. The new correlation predicted the experimental data within a mean absolute error of 5.5%.

  • A dual gate trench emitter IGBT structure is proposed and studied numerically using the device simulator MEDICI. The on-state forward voltage drop latch-up current density turn-off time and breakdown voltage of the proposed structure are compared with those of the conventional DMOS-IGBT and trench gate IGBT structures. The proposed structure forms an additional channel and increases collector current level resulting in reduction of on -state forward voltage drop. In addition the trench emitter increases latch-up current density by 148% in comparison with that for the conventional DMOS-IGBT and by 83% compared with that for the trench gate IGBT without degradation in breakdown voltage when the half trench gate width(Tgw) and trench emitter depth(Ted) are fixed at $1.5\mum\; and\; 2\mum$, respectively
