An Effect of Dietary Chlorella on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women

  • Age-related osteopenia and osteoporosis are common in postmenopausal women due to decrease in bone mass and ovarian function. A therapy for osteoporosis would depend on only drugs to inhibit bone loss, hormonal replacement therapy, exercise and dietary supplementation and it is very hard to fad an ideal therapy for osteoporosis as yet. Chlorella which is rich in minerals such as calcium magnesium fatty acids, vitamins and sterol, could be applicable for prevention and co-treatment of osteoporosis, but it has yet to be studied. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the effect of dietary chlorella on bone mineral density (BMD) and nutritional improvement. BMD was measured in the femural neck and lumber spine portion. Nutritional and bone turnover markers from blood samples were assessed serum lkaline phosphatase, hemoglobin, number of erythrocytes and total protein. Studies for the femur neck measurement showed that normal BMD increased 2.1% for the group fed chlorella supplemented diet for four month and increased 6.6% fur group treated for one year when compared to the control group, and for the lumber spine measurements the few month group showed an increase of 9.1% over the control group, the one year group showed an increase of 64.2% over the control group. Hemoglobin content, number of erythrocytes and total protein showed similar increased patterns with BMD measurement, meanwhile, serum alkaline phosphatase increased 3% for the four month group and decrease 16% for the one year group compare to the control group. In conclusion, the postmenopausal women fed chlorella supplemented diet results in an increase in BMD. This is a marked increment in lumber spine, enhancement of nutritional state and stable bone turnover. This data showed a positive relationship between BMD and nutritional change with chlorella treatment, and suggested that chlorella dietary may lead to improving and preventing rapid loss of BMD in postmenopausal women.

6가크롬 노출에 따른 넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus의 혈액학적 성상 및 혈장성분의 변화 (Effects of Exposure to Hexavalent Chromium on Hematological Parameters and Plasma Components in Flatfish, Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • 본 연구는 넙치 치어(평균 체장 $13.3{\pm}1.6cm$, 평균 체중 $25.6{\pm}3.7g$)를 수중 6가크롬에 10일간 0, 0.5,1.0, $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$의 농도로 노출시켜 독성영향 판단하기 위해 수행되었다. 넙치 hemoglobin과 hematocrit와 같은 혈액학적 성상은 수중 크롬노출에 의해 유의적으로 감소하였다. 혈장 무기성분인 calcium과 magnesium은 크롬노출에 의해 유의적인 변화는 나타나지 않았다. 혈장 무기성분인 glucose와 cholesterol과 같은 $1.0mg\;L^{-1}$ 이상의 크롬노출에 의해 유의적으로 증가하였지만, total protein은 유의적인 변화는 나타나지 않았다. 혈장 효소성분인 AST, ALT, ALP는 크롬노출에 의해 유의적인 증가가 나타났다. 본 실험의 결과는 수중 크롬노출은 넙치의 혈액 및 혈장성분에 유의적인 변화를 유발하며, 이러한 지표의 변화는 수중 크롬노출의 독성영향을 판단하는 주요한 지표가 될 것이다.

Tannic acid가 랫드의 카드뮴독성에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Tannic Acid to the Cadmium on Mouse)

  • Tannic acid(0.5mg/ml , 1.0mg/ml, 2.0mg/ml)와 카드뮴(20mg/kg)을 마우스에 경구투여한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1.Tannic acid와 카드뮴을 투여한 마우스의 증체량과 음수소비량에 변화가 있었으나, 카드뮴투여에 의한 변화는 tannic acid 투여에 의하여 감소되었다. 2. 카드뮴투여에 의하여 간장의 상대중량과 뇌 상대중량이 대조군에 비하여 유의한 변화가 있었으며, tannic acid 1.0mg/ml 투여군에서는 간장의 상대중량, 폐장의 상대중량, 흉선의 상대중량도 유의하게 변화하였다. (P<0.05). 3. Hemoglobin contents, packed cell volume, platelet count, neutrophill count 등의 혈액학적인 변화는 대조군에 비하여 카드뮴 투여군에서 유의한 변화가 인정되었다. 그러나 이러한 유의한 변화가 tannic acid를 동시 투여한 군에서는 나타나지 않았다. 4. 카드뮴을 투여한 군에서는 혈청학적 변화(ALT, AST, BUN와 creatinine)가 있었으나 tannic acid 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mg/ml을 동시 투여한 군에서는 회복되는 경향이 나타났다. 위의 결과로 미루어 카드뮴 투여에 의한 독성이 tannic acid을 2.0mg/ml/day 이상 4주간 투여했을 때 경감효과가 나타날 수 있었다. 그러나, 카드뮴과 같은 중금속의 독성에 tannic acid가 어떻게 경감효과를 나타내는지에 대한 작용기전의 연구가 더 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

양파 추출물의 in vivo 생리활성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Biological Activity of Allium cepa Extract in Vivo)

  • 이 연구는 설치류에서 양파추출물의 효능을 평가하기 위하여 실시하였다. 실험동물은 대조군(control)과 양파추출물 투여군(ACE)으로 나누어서 진행하였다. ACE그룹은 대조군에 비해 적혈구(RBC), 헤모글로빈(HGB), 헤마토크릿(Hct) 수준이 약간 증가하는 것을 보였다(p<0.05). 반면, 헤모글로빈, 단핵구, 림프구 및 호중구는 대조군과 비교하였을 경우 유의미한 변화(p<0.05)가 없었다. GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) 및 GPT (glutamic pyruvic transaminase) 수준을 분석한 결과 대조군에 비해 ACE그룹이 유의적으로 감소하였다(p<0.05). 혈당, 총단백질, HDL-콜레스테롤은 ACE 그룹에서 약간 높았고, 트리글리세라이드, 총콜레스테롤 수치는 대조군에 비해 ACE그룹에서 더 낮았다(p<0.05). 간 조직과 혈액의 면역과 염증에 관련된 사이토카인(인터루킨 1알파(IL-1α), 인터루킨 1베타(IL-1β), 종양괴사인자알파(TNF-α), 인터루킨 6(IL-6), 인터루킨 10(IL-10), 인터페론감마(INF-γ), 인터루킨 18(IL-18), 인터루킨 2(IL-2), 과립구 대식구 집락자극인자(GM-CSF)) 수준은 모두 정상 범위 내에 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구결과는 고농축 식이성 양파추출물은 혈액학적 지표와 면역 기능에 독성이 없다는 것을 보여주는 기초데이터로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

과거의 직업적 납 노출에 의한 혈중납 및 골중납의 증가가 남성 골밀도 변화에 미치는 영향 (Effect of increased blood and tibia lead on the change of bone mineral density in retired male lead workers)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of increased blood and tibia lead on the change of bone mineral density in retired male lead workers. One hundred nine retired male lead workers who worked in 4 different lead industries and 51 nonoccupationally lead exposed male subjects were recruited from March 2004 to October 2004. Bone mineral density(BMD) was measured by broadband ultrasound attenuation(BUA) at left calcaneous bone area with broadband ultrasound attenuation method of QUS-2(Metra Biosystems Inc, USA). Tibia bone lead was measured for skeletal bone lead with K-xray fluorescence(K-XRF) and blood lead was analyzed with flameless atomic spectrophotometer. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum calcium and iron were also analyzed. In addition, information for smoking and drinking status and basic personal data such as age and lead exposure were also collected using questionnaire inquiry. Blood lead was correlated with tibia lead (r=0.711) and these two variables were negatively correlated with BUA in bivariate analysis. BUA and tibia lead showed significant main effects on the change of blood lead after adjusting covariates. The effect modification by the level of BMD (low: lower than the median of BUA and high: higher than the median of BUA) was observed between the association of tibia lead and blood lead after adjustment of covariates. The subjects who had higher BMD seemed to have lower blood lead by the increase of tibia lead than those of lower BMD. In the multiple regression analysis of blood lead and tibia lead on BUA after adjustment of covariates, only blood lead showed statistically significant effect on BUA. This study confirmed that BMD and blood lead were significantly associated. To verify the causal association of BMD on blood lead and vice versa, further longitudinal studies are needed.

제 2형 당뇨병 환자에서 Metformin과 병용 시 Dapagliflozin과 Sitagliptin의 효능 비교 (Comparisons of Efficacy between Dapagliflozin and Sitagliptin in Combination with Metformin in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare effects on glycemic control and weight loss between the metformin/dapagliflozin combination and the metformin/sitagliptin combination in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed the medical records, from January $1^{st}$ 2015 to March $31^{st}$ 2016, of type 2 diabetic patients who were older than 18 and were prescribed with dapagliflozin or sitagliptin in combination with metformin. Hemoglobin $A_{1c}$ ($HbA_{1c}$) levels and weights were measured every 3 months. Results: The dapagliflozin group showed a greater decrease in $HbA_{1c}$ levels after 3 months (-0.75% vs. 0.01%, P<0.001), 6 months (-0.36% vs. 0.08%, P=0.029), and 9 months (-0.53% vs. 0.08%, P=0.046) compared to the sitagliptin group. Also, the dapagliflozin group showed a greater significant decrease in the rate of change in $HbA_{1c}$ levels after 3 months (-0.09 vs. 0.01, P<0.001), 6 months (-0.04 vs. 0.01, P=0.031), 9 months (-0.07 vs. 0.02, P=0.029), and 12 months (-0.05 vs. 0.05, P=0.047). Furthermore, the dapagliflozin group showed a greater decrease in amount of weight change after 3 months (-2.46 kg vs. 0.37 kg, P<0.001), 6 months (-3.02 kg vs. 0.13 kg, P<0.001), and 9 months (-2.27 kg vs. 0.50 kg, P=0.002). Finally, the dapagliflozin group showed a greater decrease in the rate of change in weight after 3 months (-3.10% vs. 0.52%, P<0.001), 6 months (-3.83% vs. 0.21%, P<0.001), 9 months (-2.84% vs. 0.79%, P=0.002), and 12 months (-4.91% vs. 0.44%, P<0.001). Conclusions: It was concluded that dapagliflozin is more effective than sitagliptin for type 2 diabetic patients.

다른 거리의 철인 3종 경기 시 체중, 나트륨 및 혈액 성분에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Different Triathlon on Weight, Sodium and Hematological Changes)

  • 철인 3종 경기에 참가하는 선수들은 탈수, 저나트륨혈증, 용혈현상 및 연역반응과 같은 의학적인 문제에 직면할 수 있다. 본 연구는 철인 3종 경기 시 체중의 변화, 나트륨농도 및 혈액성분의 변화를 조사하기 위하여 서로 다른 Olympic Distance Triathlon (ODT)과 Ironman Distance Triathlon (IDT)에 참가한 선수들에게 체중과 나트륨 농도 및 혈액 성분이 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 연구하였다. 체중은 ODT와 IDT 모두 유의하게 감소하였고, 나트륨 농도는 IDT에서만 증가하였다. RBC, Hb, Hct 및 MCH는 IDT에서 증가하였고, Hct는 ODT에서 감소하였다. IDT에서는 체중의 변화율과 나트륨 농도간의 유의한 상관관계가 있었으며, 체중 감소에 따른 나트륨농도의 증가현상이 나타났다. RBC, Hb 및 Hct의 연화는 거리에 따라 영향을 받는 것으로 조사되었다. 이러한 결과들을 종합해 볼 때 철인 3종 경기와 같은 장시간 지속되는 운동 시 체중 변화가 나트륨 농도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었으며, 경기 거리에 따른 혈액 성분의 변화에 차이는 있었지만 이러한 변화는 모두 정상범위인 것으로 나타났다.

  • In the previous studies, one of our author had observed the obligatory nitrogen losses through urine and feces in young Korean male adults, and utilization of whole egg protein in Korean young adults with ordinary intake of energy as a basic study for estimating protein requirements of Korean. This study has tried to determine the protein requirement and utilization when subjects ate the Korean mixed diet at the energy level of 45 kcal per Kg body weight per day. Six healthy Korean young female adults, college students, aged $20{\sim}25$ years old, and $45{\sim}61Kg$ of body weight participated as the study subjects. They were given isocaloric diets with four different protein levels for five days each successively. These diets contained protein levels of 0.45, 0.60, 0.75 and 0.90g per Kg of body weight per day, respectively. It was attempted to observe energy and protein intake, urinary and fecal nitrogen losses, true digestibility of protein, net protein utilization of protein in the body over last two days of period of eating each diet and nitrogen balances were calculated. The body weight change and hematological observation were also performed. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1) True digestibility of protein of Korean mixed diets ranged from 83.1% to 86.5% and the average of which was $84.7{\pm}1.7%$. 2) Net protein utilization rate of Korean mixed diets was range of 49% to 55% and the average of which was $52{\pm}3%.$ 3) The body weight of subjects were slightly increased and the values of hemoglobin and hematocrit of the blood were also little increased during the experimental periods of twenty days. 4) Protein requirements of Korean mixed diet with the energy level of 45 kcal/Kg body weight per day of Korean young female adults were estimated as 1.00g/Kg/day on this experimental condition.

Long-Term Nutritional Outcomes of Near-Total Gastrectomy in Gastric Cancer Treatment: a Comparison with Total Gastrectomy Using Propensity Score Matching Analysis

  • Purpose: This study sought to examine whether near total gastrectomy (nTG) confers a longterm nutritional benefit when compared with total gastrectomy (TG) for the treatment of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent nTG or TG for gastric cancer were included (n=570). Using the 1:2 matched propensity score, 25 patients from the nTG group and 50 patients from the TG group were compared retrospectively for oncologic outcomes, including long-term survival and nutritional status. Results: The length of the proximal resection margin, number of retrieved lymph nodes and tumor nodes, metastasis stage, short-term postoperative outcomes, and long-term survival were not significantly different between the groups. The body mass index values, and serum total protein and hemoglobin levels of the patients decreased significantly until postoperative 6 months, and then recovered slightly over time (P<0.05); however, there was no difference in the levels between the groups. The prognostic nutritional index values and serum albumin levels decreased significantly until postoperative 6 months and then recovered (P<0.05); the levels decreased more in the nTG group than in the TG group (P<0.05). The mean corpuscular volumes and serum transferrin levels increased significantly until postoperative 1 year and then recovered slightly over time (P<0.05); however, there was no difference between the groups. Serum vitamin $B_{12}$, iron, and ferritin levels of the patients did not change significantly over time, and no difference existed between the groups. Conclusions: A small remnant stomach after nTG conferred no significant nutritional benefits over TG.

오가피(五加皮) (Acanthopanacis cortex)추출물(抽出物)을 첨가한 발효김치의 급여가 생쥐의 면역작용(免疫作用)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effect of Immune Function on the fermentation of Kimchi Intake to append Acanthopanacis cortex Extract in Balb/c Mice)

  • This experimental study was carried out to evaluate the effects of Kimchi intake of Acanthopanacis cortex extract (APCE) supplementation on cytokine-induction and immune response in mice. To study in experiments using male Balb/c mice fed Kimchi and Kimchi of APCE supplementation (addition of 2% of total Kimchi weight) containing fed experimental diet during 2 weeks. Experimental mice were fed control diet or diet containing freeze-dried Kimchi at the level of 5%(w/w) or 5% freeze-dried Kimchi with 2% APCE supplementation. The main ingredient of Kimchi was Korean cabbage and fermentation was carried out at $4^{\circ}C$ for three weeks. Freeze-dried 2% APCE supplementation was added to Kimchi at the begining of fermentation. In order to investigate the effect of Kimchi intake of APCE supplementation (5%Kimchi-2%APCE), the following was performed; body weight, food intake, hematological parameter, serum level of mouse interleukin-4 (mlL-4) and mouse interferon-$\gamma$ (mIFN-$\gamma$ ), and, the percentage of CD3+/CD4+, CD3+/CD8+, B220+ in splenic cells. The results of final body weight, and food diet intake of two Kimchi groups were lower than those of the control group (not supplemented experimental diet). The hematology change obtained from the level of WBC (white blood cell) and platelet were not affected by feeding different dietary regiments, but the level of RBC (red blood cells) HB (hemoglobin), and spleen weight of two Kimchi groups were increased significantly than those of the control group. The serum level of IL-4 and IFN-$\gamma$ of two Kimchi groups were increased significantly than those of the control group, also enhanced the percentages of the CD3+/CD4+ and CD3+/CD8+ by 5% freeze-dried Kimchi, and 5%Kimchi-2%APCE group were 43.9 and 65.2%, and 96.0 and 208% than those of the control group, respectively. From these results, it can be concluded that Kimchi itself has an immuno-stimulatory effect and Kimchi contaning 2% APCE supplementation has the more pronounced effect in vivo system.
