Multiwavelength Study of an Off-nuclear Active Galactic Nucleus in NGC 5252

  • We present a multiwavelength study of an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 5252, which is known as a candidate for an intermediate-mass black hole. The ULX, located 22 arcsec away from the center of NGC 5252, was first discovered with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. In the optical spectra, the strong narrow emission lines are found at the position of the ULX. It reveals that the ULX is likely associated with NGC 5252. The VLBA data of the ULX yields that the black hole mass of the ULX is smaller than 106 solar mass, inferred from the black hole fundamental plane. From the near-infrared imaging data, we find that the stellar mass associated with the ULX is smaller than ~107.9 solar mass, implying that the ULX can be a remnant of a merging dwarf. We also find that K-band luminosity of the ULX is two orders of magnitude smaller than typical active galactic nuclei at a given [OIII] luminosity. It may suggest the ULX lacks the dusty torus possibly due to the disappearance of dusty material during the recoiling process.

  • Due to the Covid-19 pandemic more than 6 million people have died, and it has bought unprecedented challenges to our lives. The recent outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPXV) has brought out new tensions among the scientific community. Currently, there is no specific treatment protocol for MPXV. Several antivirals, vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) and smallpox vaccines have been used to treat MPXV. Ginseng, one of the more famous among traditional medicines, has been used for infectious disease for thousands of years. It has shown promising antiviral effects. Ginseng could be used as a potential adaptogenic agent to help prevent infection by MPXV along with other drugs and vaccines. In this mini review, we explore the possible use of ginseng in MPXV prevention based on its antiviral activity.

Physio-Morphological Changes in a Riboflavin Producer Eremothecium ashbyii DT1 and UV Mutants in Submerged Fermentation

  • By UV-irradiation of Eremothecium ashbyii DTl, a higWy flavinogenic mutant (UV-18-57) and a nonflavinogenic mutant (UV -85) were obtained. The physio-morphological characteristics of these three strains were studied on glucose medium in submerged fermentation. Glucose utilization and mycelial growth occurred in 0 - 2 days of fermentation. By the third day, the biomass had declined. Extracellular riboflavin excretion was distinct from the second day, reaching a maximum rate by the fourth day. The hyphae of the highly flavinogenic mutant UV-18-57 were broader than DTl, while the nonflavinogenic UV-85 hyphae were very thin. Riboflavin accumulation was high in UV-18-57 (extracellular riboflavin,$825\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ , and intracellular, $490\mu\textrm{g}/ml$) and caused the mycelia to swell into bulbous forms. Riboflavin accumulation was less in DTl ($108\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ extracellular and $24\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ intracellular) and correspondingly its hyphae were thinner than those of UV-18-57 and swollen bulbous mycelia were not prominent. UV-85 was nonflavinogenic and, accordingly, its mOlphological characteristics included long thin filaments with no intracellular riboflavin accumulation. A large number of greenish fluorescence spores were seen in UV-18-57, whereas DTI had less spores and UV-85 was nonsporulating. Sporulation is correlated with riboflavin production. UV-18-57 had better mycelial integrity and lysis started only by the seventh day, whereas DTI and UV -85 started to lyze earlier by 4 -5 days. By the late stage of fermentation (eighth day), DTl had a few long, thin filaments indicating some secondary growth, whereas UV -85 showed a compact pellet form of mycelia. Most mycelia of UV-18-57 still appeared intact.

Floristic diversity assessment and vegetation analysis of Upper Siang district of eastern Himalaya in North East India (인도 북동부의 동히말라야 상부 Siang 지역의 식물다양성 및 식생 조사)

  • Present paper is an outcome of a four-year floristic survey work carried out in Upper Siang district of eastern Himalayan region in India which is also recognized as one of the 39 known 'Biodiversity Hot-Spots' of the world. We present here with a vegetation analysis of this area along with a checklist of 1,003 taxa belonging to 110 families, 529 genera, 994 species, 1 subspecies and 8 varieties of the angiosperms. Besides, one new species, 3 new records to India and 82 endemic species were also recorded. The diversity of herbs and shrubs were found higher than the tree species. Orchidaceae was found the most dominant family followed by Poaceae and Fabaceae. Many threatened plants have also been reported from the area. However, rapid urbanization and Jhum cultivation are imposing direct threat to the natural vegetation. We suggest some conservation measures that could help protecting this natural heritage.

A NEW TYPE 1 AGN POPULATION AND ITS IMPLICATION ON THE AGN UNIFIED MODEL

  • We have discovered an unexplored population of galaxies featuring weak broad-line regions (BLRs) at z < 0.2 from detailed analysis of galaxy spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These objects predominantly show a stellar continuum but also a broad $H{\alpha}$ emission line, indicating the presence of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) oriented so that we are viewing the central engine directly without significant obscuration. These accreting black holes have previously eluded detection due to their weak nature. The new BLR AGNs we found increased the number of known type 1 AGNs by 49%. Some of these new BLR AGNs were detected at the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and their X-ray properties confirm that they are indeed type 1 AGN. Based on our new and more complete catalogue of type 1 AGNs, we derived the type 1 fraction of AGNs as a function of [OIII] ${\lambda}5007$ emission luminosity and explored the possible dilution effect on the obscured AGN due to star-formation. The new type 1 AGN fraction shows much more complex behavior with respect to black hole mass and bolometric luminosity than suggested by the existing receding torus model. The type 1 AGN fraction is sensitive to both of these factors, and there seems to be a sweet spot (ridge) in the diagram of black hole mass and bolometric luminosity. Furthermore, we present a hint that the Eddington ratio plays a role in determining the opening angles. This work is submitted to ApJS.

An Efficient Control Strategy Based Multi Converter UPQC using with Fuzzy Logic Controller for Power Quality Problems

  • A custom power device provides an integrated solution to the present problems that are faced by the utilities and power distribution. In this paper, a new controller is designed which is connected to a multiconverter unified power quality conditioner (MC-UPQC) for improving the power quality issues adopted modified synchronous reference frame (MSRF) theory with Fuzzy logic control (FLC) technique. This newly designed controller is connected to a source in order to compensate voltage and current in two feeders. The expanded concept of UPQC is multi converter-UPQC; this system has a two-series voltage source inverter and one shunt voltage source inverter connected back to back. This configuration will helps mitigate any type of voltage / current fluctuations and power factor correction in power distribution network to improve power quality issues. In the proposed system the power can be conveyed from one feeder to another in order to mitigate the voltage sag, swell, interruption and transient response of the system. The control strategies of multi converter- UPQC are designed based on the modified synchronous reference frame theory with fuzzy logic controller. The fast dynamics response of dc link capacitor is achieved with the help of Fuzzy logic controller. Different types of fault conditions are taken and simulated for the analysis and the results are compared with the conventional method. The relevant simulation and compensation performance analysis of the proposed multi converter-UPQC with fuzzy logic controller is performed.

  • A thermophilic $Alicyclobacillus$ $acidocaldarius$, which produces thermostable ${\alpha}$-amylase, was isolated from the hot water effluent of a boiled rice mill near Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. The effect of different culture conditions on the growth and production of extracellular ${\alpha}$-amylase by thermophilic $A.$ $acidocaldarius$ was investigated in laboratory scale. The results showed that the optimum conditions for the production of ${\alpha}$-amylase are a temperature of $60^{\circ}C$, pH of 6.0, and medium starch concentration of 1.0%, and yeast extract and tryptone of 0.2%. Surfactants, like Tween-20 and SDS, up to 0.02%, were found to increase the bacterial growth and enzymes. Further increase in their concentration resulted in significantly decreased enzyme production.

Pre-Treatment Performance Status and Stage at Diagnosis in Patients with Head and Neck Cancers

  • Performance status (PS) is a key factor in the selection of treatment in head and neck cancer patients (HNC). There is a probability in the development of an unfavorable PS with HNC advancing stages. This retrospective study was done on data of patients registered during the period from January 2010 to December 2012 at a cancer registry in the North Eastern India. PS was recorded according to the WHO scale. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the probability of poor performance status with advancing stage. Out of 3,593 patients, there were 78.9% (2,836) males and 21.1% (757) females. Average PS0 was seen in 57.4% of all HNCs, less than 1% of all cases in HNCs with poor PS3-4 except in cases with thyroid, parotid and nose and PNS cancers, 0.7% stage IV (${\pm}M1$) HNC with PS4, favorable PS0-1 was seen in 84% to 100% of cases, RR=57.1 (CI=21.2-154.1) in M1 for PS4 and with advancing stages the probability of worsening of PS0 to PS4 was 3 times (P=0.021, 95% CI= 1.187-8.474). In HNC, the majority of patients presents with a favorable PS0-1 with different odds of worsening of PS with advancing stages and the presence of metastasis in stage IV is significantly associated with a poor PS.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer in People of North East India: Critical Insights Gained at a Regional Cancer Centre

  • Background: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease comprising of distinct biological subtypes with many targeted prognostic biomarkers having therapeutic implications. However, no specific targeted therapy for triple negative breast cancer has been discovered to date and hence further research is needed. Aim: The aim and objectives of the present study were to examine the prevalence of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in North-East India and to compare the clinicopathological parameters in two study groups defined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) - "TNBC" and "Others". Materials and Methods: We carried out a retrospective study in a cohort of 972 patients diagnosed with invasive breast carcinoma in the Department of Pathology, Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, a Regional Cancer Centre for treatment and research, Guwahati, for a period of 3 years and 10 months from January 2010 to October 2013. Based on IHC findings, patients were divided into two groups - "TNBC" and "Others". All relevant clinicopathological parameters were compared in both. TNBC were defined as those that were estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2/neu negative while those positive for any of these markers were defined as "Others". Results: In this study, out of total 972 cases 31.9% (310 cases) were defined as TNBC and 662 cases (68.1%) as "Others" based on IHC markers. Compared to the "Others" category, TNBC presented at an early age (mean 40 years), were associated with high grade large tumours and high rate of node positivity, IDC NOS being the most common histological subtype in TNBC. Conclusions: TNBC accounts for a significant portion of breast cancers in this part of India and commonly present at younger age and tend to be large high grade tumours.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS), highly reactive molecules, are produced by living organisms as a result of normal cellular metabolism and environmental factors, and can damage nucleic acids and proteins, thereby altering their functions. The human body has several mechanisms to counteract oxidative stress by producing antioxidants. A shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of oxidants is termed as "oxidative stress". Paradoxically, there is a large body of research demonstrating the general effect of oxidative stress on signaling pathways, less is known about the initial and direct regulation of signaling molecules by ROS, or what we term the "oxidative interface." This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms through which ROS directly interact with critical signaling molecules to initiate signaling in a broad variety of cellular processes, such as proliferation and survival (MAP kinases and PI3 kinase), ROS homeostasis, and antioxidant gene regulation (Ref-1 and Nrf-2). This review also deals with classification as well as mechanisms of formation of free radicals, examining their beneficial and deleterious effects on cellular activities and focusing on the potential role of antioxidants in preventing and repairing damage caused by oxidative stress. A discussion of the role of phytochemical antioxidants in oxidative stress, disease and the epigenome is included.
