  • Thick and dense deposit of higher than 97% of theoretical density was formed by induction plasma spraying. To investigate the effects of powder morphology on the density of deposit, two different kinds of Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia powder, METCO202NS (atomized & agglomerated) and AMDRY146 (fused & crushed), were used and compared. After plasma treatment, porous METCO202NS powder was all the more densely deposited and its density was increased. In addition to the effect of powder morphology, the process parameters such as, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and spraying distance, and so on, were evaluated. The result of experiment with AMDRY146 powder, particle size and spraying distance affected highly on the density of the deposit. The optimum process condition for the deposition of -75 ${\mu}m$ of 20%-Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia powder was 120/201/min of Ar/$H_2$ gas rate, 80 kW of plasma plate power, 8 cm of probe position and 150 Torr of spraying chamber pressure, at which its density showed 97.91% of theoretical density and its deposition rate was 20 mm/min. All the results were assessed by statistical approach what is called ANOVA.

  • The OPS (Optical Particle Sensor) using light scattering from the particles (real-time measurement without physical contact to the particles) can be used for cleanroom or atmospheric environment monitoring. For particles smaller than 300 nm, the detection efficiency becomes lower as scattered light decreases with particle size. To obtain higher detection efficiency with small particles, the flow field in particle chamber and the detection volume should be designed optimally to achieve maximum scattered light from the particles. In this study, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT was used to simulate the gas flow field and particle trajectories with various optical chamber designs for 300 nm PSL particle. For estimation of laser viewing volume, we used a commercial computational optical design program ZEMAX. The results will be a great help in the development of OPS which can measure small particles with higher detection efficiency.

  • This paper presents the spray atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector for the direct-injection gasoline engine. The gasoline sprays of the injector were minted into a pressurized spray chamber with a optical access at various ambient pressures. The atomization characteristics of fuel spray such as mean diameter, mean velocity of droplet were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. In order to investigate the effect of fuel injection pressure on the quantitative characteristics of spray, the global visualization and experiment of particle measurement in the fuel spray were investigated at 3, 5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different ambient pressure in the spray chamber. Based on the results of this work, the fuel injection pressure of fuel injector in gasoline direct-injection engine have influence upon distribution of the mean velocity and droplet size of fuel spray. Also, the influence of injection pressure on the velocity distribution at various measuring location were investigated.

  • In this paper, we present the theoretical and numerical results of scavenge characteristics in a small prechamber of an HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine. Two theoretical models are proposed in prediction of the scavenge time and the efficiency ; one is the non-mixing models in which it is assumed that the input gas($CH_{4}$) and the existing gas(air) do not mix with each other, and the other is the fully-mixed model in which the two gases are assumed to mix completely before ejecting to the ambient air. Focus is also given to the effect on the scavenge performance of the size of the chamber oulet.

  • An oil hydraulic line is modeled in which a pipe or two pipes of different size connected in series and terminated in a chamber, i.e. a composite line system. The frequency response characteristics are investigated analytically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis is base on unsteady laminar flow of a viscous compressible fluid. It is generally difficult to obtain exactly the frequency equation of these lines system and its solutions in consideration of viscosity of hydraulic fluid, because the diameters of two pipes and length are different. The effect of the position where the cross-sectional area of changes suddenly, the inner radius of pipe and the volume of terminal chamber on the frequency characteristics of this composite line system are also described.

  • Acoustic characteristics of silencer system are affected by various geometric parameters such as cross sectional geometry, size of chamber, and location of inlet-outlet port. It is impossible to obtain exact solutions of the equations of acoustic wave propagation except few simple cases. So, we resort to numerical techniques to analyze performance of acoustic system. In this work, finite element formulation has been obtained to predict transmission loss of an arbitrary 3-dimensional muffler in the presence of mean flow of low mach number. The effect of the degree of the ellipticity of expansion chambers on the transmission loss has been studied using the resulting finite element equation.

  • A study has been conducted on the bulging process of liquid rocket engine nozzle which is essential to the manufacturing regenerative cooling combustion chamber. Mechanical properties of the material used for the bulging were experimentally obtained by tension tests. Deformation of the bulged nozzle was confirmed by a structural analysis. The developed bulging process and the deformation analysis result were confirmed by manufacturing of the bulged nozzle specimens and the bulging test. There has been a bulging failure among 7 bulged specimens due to the necking of the material. The cause of necking was investigated by comparing microstructure of the material. The investigation has revealed grain size of the material has considerable effect on the occurrence of the necking.

  • Theoretical and numerical approaches were conducted in order to study supersonic exhaust diffusers to simulate high altitude performance of rockets on the ground. A physical model of concern includes a rocket motor, vacuum chamber, and diffuser, which have axisymmetric configurations. An analysis was conducted to investigate operation characteristics of supersonic exhaust diffusers from a flow-development point of view. Emphasis was placed on theoretical formulation to predict the starting pressure of diffusers, the effect of the vacuum chamber size, and the minimum starting pressure of the rocket motor to start the diffuser.

  • The Separated Pulsed Laser Deposition (SPLD) technique uses two chambers that are separated by a conic metallic wall with a central orifice. The pressures of ablation chamber and deposition chamber were controlled by the differential vacuum system. We deposited zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films by SPLD method to obtain high quality thin films. When the bias voltage of +500 V was applied between a substrate and an orifice, the ZnO thin film was deposited efficiently. The deposited ZnO thin film at ablation chamber gas pressure of Ar 5 mTorr showed the sharpest ultraviolet absorption edge indicatory the band gap of about 3.1 eV. ZnO thin films were deposited using effect of electric and magnetic fields in the SPLD method. E${\times}$B drift happened by an electric fields and a magnetic fields, activated plasma plume, as a result the film surface became very smooth. When the bias voltage of +500 V and magnet of 0,1 T were applied the ZnO thin films surface state showed high quality. Grain size was 41.99 nm and RMS was 0.84 nm.

  • Water hammer pumps can effectively use the water hammer phenomenon for water pumping. They are capable of providing an effective fluid transport method in regions without a well-developed social infrastructure. The results of experiments examining the effect of the geometric form of water hammer pumps by considering their major dimensions have been reported. However, these conventional studies have not fully evaluated pump performance in terms of pump head and flow rate, common measures of pump performance. The authors have focused on the effects on the pump performance of various geometric form factors in water hammer pumps. The previous study examined how the hydrodynamic characteristics was affected by the inner diameter ratio of the drive and lift pipes and the angle of the drive pipe, basic form factors of water hammer pumps. The previous papers also showed that the behavior of water hammer pump operation could be divided into four characteristic phases. The behavior of temporal changes in valve chamber and air chamber pressures according to the air volume in the air chamber located downstream of the lift valve was also clarified in connection with changes in water hammer pump performance. In addition, the effects on water hammer pump performance of the length of the spring attached to the drain valve and the drain pipe angle, form factors around the drain valve, were examined experimentally. This study focuses on the form of the lift valve, a major component of water hammer pumps, and examines the effects of the size of the lift valve opening area on water hammer pump performance. It also clarifies the behavior of flow in the valve chamber during water hammer pump operation.
