  • Urban subways are one of the main parts of urban transportation networks in every city that always requires much attention in order to improve its efficiency in aspects of safety, reliability speed and costs. As the viewpoint of costs, an accurate design, especially design of vertical alignment, can have a dominant role to reduce the costs of urban railway projects. This paper seeks to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of designing chain vertical alignment for urban subways in compare to flat vertical alignment. To achieve this goal, line A of Qom subway in Iran was selected as a case study in this research. Five parameters considered in the technical-economical evaluation: (1) energy consumption, (2) rolling stock, (3) operation, (4) civil works and geotechnical and (5) hydrological, drainage and pumping. According to the results, a power saving of about 40% have been estimated in the chain vertical alignment for the train without regenerative braking in compare with the flat vertical alignment, although the power saving was calculated less than 10% for the train with regenerative braking. Finally it was found that due to the modern rolling stock technology, the chain vertical alignment represents fewer advantages in compare to the past years.

  • Poly(amic acid) precursors were prepared by mixing various main chain dianhydrides, main chain diamines and side chain diamines. The side chain diamine has an alkylbicyclohexyl group as a side chain. The copolyimide films, produced by casting the poly (amic acids) solution, exhibited the vertical alignment property without the rubbing process in the range of the curing themperature from $90^{\circ}C$ to $240^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The thermal and surface properties of the poly(amic acids) depending on the curing temperature was examined.

  • In this paper, vertically aligned (VA) liquid crystal (LC) modes were investigated using the alkyl chain ordering effect of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared on the anisotropic inorganic surface. On the anisotropic surface prepared through oblique ion beam irradiations, the SAM molecules are adsorbed, producing macroscopic alkyl chain ordering, which can determine the pretilt direction of the vertically aligned LC molecules through the intermolecular interactions on the surface.

  • Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. However, a small decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with main chain type was measured. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

  • In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

  • New rod-disc liquid crystal (LC) molecule RD12 (12 is the number of carbon atoms between the rod and disc mesogenic liquid crystals) was synthesized via the chemical attachment of six cyanobiphenly calamitic mesogens linked to the triphenyl discotic mesogen with six alkyl chain linkage. Aligning characteristics associated with homogenous alignment is investigated at first and then field-dependent molecular reorientation under a vertical electric field is studied. Interestingly, they show abnormal slow molecular transition from initiate state (no electric field condition) to certain voltage. In this condition, we observe the molecular competition during reorientation. However, once a tilting direction of disk molecules are defined, the frustration is not observed anymore. The origin of this phenomenon is explained with a suggested model for the first time.
