  • NCO-terminated prepolymers were synthesized by reacting carbonate-type polyol(PTMCG)($M_w=1,000$ and 2,000) with MDI and N-methyldiethanolamine, as a chain extender. Carbonate-type polyurethane containg zwitterionic group was prepared by reacting the prepolymer with 1,3-propane sultone. From the IR and NMR spectra of model reactions, it was known that the ionization occurred under the same condition. The structure of zwitterionic carbonate-type polyurethane(ZPU) therefore could be confirmed from the model reactions. Glass transition temperature(Tg) ranged between $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ from the thermal data. Tg was between $-15{\sim}-18^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU10 samples and between $-25{\sim}-26^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU20 polymers. Tensile strength increased with mole ratio of ionic content. On the contrary, elongation was rather dropped with mole ratio of ionic content. ZPU10-30 having better tensile strength and less elongation was selected as a membrane for the concentration of ethanol aqueous solution through pervaporation. To obtain the better selectivity, it was crosslinked with HMDI. In the swelling test, it showed the higher swelling degree at around 50wt% ethanol concentration due to the plastization effect of ethanol. To optimize the separation capacity, two operating factors-feed concentration and temperature-were considered. The overall separation capacity was as follows : separation factor, 2~83.2 ; the flux, $25.4{\sim}58.8g/m^2hr$.

  • To develop a crosslinker for the polyester powder coatings, $N^1,N^1,N^4,N^4$-tetrakis(hydroxyethyl)cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxamide (Cy-${\beta}-HAA$), incorporated with a cyclohexane ring within the main chain of commercial ${\beta}-hydroxyalkylamide$ (${\beta}-HAA$), was prepared from the amidation of dimethyl trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and diethanolamine in the presence of $NaOCH_3$, The structure of $Cy-{\beta}-HAA$ was confirmed by its NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS spectra. $Cy-{\beta}-HAA$ was thermally more stable than ${\beta}-HAA$. When $Cy-{\beta}-HAA$ was used as a crosslinker for the polyester powder coatings, it provided the smooth coating surface and reduced the formation of pinholes in the coating surface with comparison with ${\beta}-HAA$.

  • To isolate a gene for cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) from alkalophilic Bacillus sp. E1, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was carried out. Direct molecular cloning of 1.2 kbp fragment and partial nucleotide sequence analysis of the PCR amplified clone, pH12, showed close homology with CGTases from Bacillus species. To investigate the genomic structure of the gene, Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA was carried out with the clone pH12 as a molecular probe. It showed that 5.3 kbp XbaI fragment was hybridized with the probe pH12. To isolate a genomic clone, genomic DNA library was constructed and a genomic clone for CGTase, pCGTE1, was isolated. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the clone pCGTE1 revealed that BCGTE1 contained 2,109 bp open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 703 amino acids and showed over 94.3% amino acid sequence homology with CGTase of ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ producer, Bacillus sp. KC201.(Received October 7, 1997; accepted October 20, 1997)

  • One of the core policies recently implemented by the Korean government is the introduction of a creative economy, a concept that integrates ICT with the existing economic structure in order to create new growth factors and jobs. In June of 2013, the National Assembly passed a bill for the institutional practice of a creative economy. The concept of a creative economy is to integrate industries centered on ICT in order to form a new-concept industry paradigm that creates new values and services that exceed past industrial categories. In other words, smart convergence, which integrates ICT with various industries, is evaluated as a core factor for boosting the creative economy. Thus, based on the definition of 'smart convergence', this study predicted the economic effects and sociocultural changes that will ensue due to the future era of smart convergence. Also, this study proposes policies for enhancing the creative economy in various ways. More specifically, in-depth interviews with convergence industry experts were carried out and quantitative analyses were performed employing a Solow Model. Furthermore, as a means to revitalize the creative economy, this study underscores the significance of the preemptive institutionalization of legislations and suggests several policy proposals regarding smart convergence rooted in market supply and the demand chain, smart convergence through selective focus, and smart work. This study is differentiated from previous studies that have only focused in establishing theories in that it offers quantitative research with a consideration of the feasibility of proposed policies. The leading experience of Korea regarding smart convergence can provide important lessons to other countries that hope to promote a creative economy as a means to create new growth factors and jobs.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems arising from the actual conditions of the Foodbank, and to implement the HACCP system as a solution in terms of increasing the safety of donated food within the Foodbank. In order to apply HACCP system, the entire Foodbank working process such as preparation, collection, transportation, division, and distribution was considered and analyzed to decide the application point for CCPs. Donated foods mainly consisted of processed foods, raw materials, lunch boxes, and cooked foods from mass catering establishments, which dominated over the others in terms of quantity. Cooked foods were divided into three groups based on menu-types and processing methods. Temperature, pH, and aw were measured on cooked foods, and Total Plate Count, Coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157:H7 were conducted in order to apply a HACCP plan. From these experiments, temperature, pH, and $a_w$ of donated food were likely contributed to microbial growth. Donated foods before HACCP implementation showed high numbers in terms of total plate count and Coliforms, both well over the acceptable standard levels. By setting the CCPs on maintenance of donated food below $10^{\circ}C$ and using a $75^{\circ}C$ reheating method, microbiological hazard levels were able to be controlled and lowered. From these results, it is concluded that in order to guarantee food safety, foods donated to the Foodbank must not only maintain a reasonable level of initial microbiological growth, but also must be handled properly through time and temperature controls within the Foodbank system. Furthermore, in terms of implementing the HACCP plan within the Foodbank management structure, basic food safety and sanitation measures, such as reheating facilities and various cold chain systems such as refrigerated vehicle for food transportation are importantly needed. The training and education of Foodbank personnel and management in areas such as awareness of hygiene and safe food handling and practice are also required and necessary.

  • Yeast cell wall mutant, Saccharomyces cerevisiae IS2 was screened by the NTG treatment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 7911. The mutant was highly resistant to zymolase, which specifically degrades ${\beta}$-1,3-D-glucose chain of ${\beta}$-glucan and mechanical disruption by glass beads. These phenomena demonstrate that the yeast mutant has cell wall structure different from the wild-type. The ${\beta}$-glucan of yeast mutant and wild-type strains was recovered by sequential extraction with NaOH. The injection of ${\beta}$-glucan into the abdominal cavity of mouse resulted in an increase in the number of peritoneal immune cells, NO (nitric oxide) production, and phagocytic activity of macrophage. The number of immune cells was found to be $3.90{\times}10^6\;cells/10\;mL$ and $5.48{\times}10^6\;cells/10\;mL$ with the wild-type and mutant ${\beta}$-glucan, respectively. The effect on the NO production and phagocytic activity of mutant ${\beta}$-glucan were 1.69 and 1.43-fold higher than those of wild-type. These results indicate that the immuno-stimulating activity of alternated ${\beta}$-glucan from mutant yeast is higher than that of wild-type.

  • Objective: A disintegrin and metallopeptidase with thrombospondin motifs type 8 (ADAMTS8) is crucial for diverse physiological processes, such as inflammation, tissue morphogenesis, and tumorigenesis. The chicken ADAMTS8 (chADAMTS8) gene was differentially expressed in the kidney following exposure to different calcium concentrations, suggesting a pathological role of this protein in metabolic diseases. We aimed to examine the molecular characteristics of chADAMTS8 and analyze the gene-expression differences in response to toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) stimulation. Methods: The ADAMTS8 mRNA and amino acid sequences of various species (chicken, duck, cow, mouse, rat, human, chimpanzee, pig, and horse) were retrieved from the Ensembl database and subjected to bioinformatics analyses. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) experiments were performed with various chicken tissues and the chicken fibroblast DF-1 cell line, which was stimulated with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly[I:C]; a TLR3 ligand). Results: The chADAMTS8 gene was predicted to contain three thrombospondin type 1 (TSP1) domains, whose amino acid sequences shared homology among the different species, whereas sequences outside the TSP1 domains (especially the amino-terminal region) were very different. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that chADAMTS8 is evolutionarily clustered in the same clade with that of the duck. chADAMTS8 mRNA was broadly expressed in chicken tissues, and the expression was significantly up-regulated in the DF-1 cells in response to poly(I:C) stimulation (p<0.05). These results showed that chADAMTS8 may be a target gene for TLR3 signaling. Conclusion: In this report, the genetic information of chADAMTS8 gene, its expression in chicken tissues, and chicken DF-1 cells under the stimulation of TLR3 were shown. The result suggests that chADAMTS8 expression may be induced by viral infection and correlated with TLR3-mediated signaling pathway. Further study of the function of chADAMTS8 during TLR3-dependent inflammation (which represents RNA viral infection) is needed and it will also be important to examine the molecular mechanisms during different regulation, depending on innate immune receptor activation.

  • This study proposes the methodology for measuring the time-distance accessibility on the Seoul bus system based on the T-card transaction databases and analyzes the results. T-card transaction databases contain the time/space information of each passenger's locations and times of the departure, transfers, and destination. We introduce the bus network graph and develop the algorithms for time-distance accessibility measurement. We account the average speed based on each passenger's get-in and getoff information in the T-card data as well as the average transfer time from the trip chain transactions. Employing the modified Floyd APSP algorithm, the shortest time distance between each pair of bus stops has been accounted. The graph-theoretic nodal accessibility has been given by the sum of the inverse time distance to all other nodes on the network. The results and spatial patterns are analyzed. This study is the first attempt to measure the time-distance accessibility for such a large transport network as the Seoul bus system consists of 34,934 bus stops on the 600 bus routes, and each bus route can have different properties in terms of speed limit, number of lanes, and traffic signal systems, and thus has great significance in the accessibility measurement studies.

  • Demands in a sustainable coffee certification program have increased steadily in the global coffee market. Along with this trend, recently the introduction of sustainable coffee certification programs in Vietnam has increased significantly. However, Vietnam's the coffee certification programs led by a single state-owned company, which is called Vinacafe, shows some differentiations from other sustainable coffee programs certified in other countries. The structure of exclusive decision-making in Vinacafe has been interfered with economic impacts in accordance with the introduction of sustainable coffee certification programs in Vietnam. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify changes in and limits of the value chain of the coffee industry with the introduction of Vietnam's sustainable coffee certification program by investigating the case of Vinacafe. To this end, the research has attempted 1) to concern with the role of Vinacafe in the process of growth in the coffee industry in central highland of Vietnam, 2) to analyze changes stemmed from the introduction of Vinacafe's sustainable coffee certification programs, and 3) to examine the limits to the introduction of sustainable coffee certification programs in Vietnam. As a result, it found out that Vinacafe subsidiaries shifted the losses resulted in the payment of additional environmental costs to produce sustainable certification coffee onto coffee farmers depended on Vinacafe subsidiaries, because the price of premium emerged from supports for certificated coffee production has not been guaranteed by Vinacafe mother firm.

  • The antimicrobial effects of ten isothiocyanates (ITCs) present in cruciferous vegetables and radish root hydrolysate were investigated against pathogenic bacteria from olive flounder. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were measured against two gram-positive bacterial strains (Streptococcus parauberis, S. iniae) and four gram-negative bacterial strains (Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio ichthyoenteri, V. harveyi, Photobacterium damselae) by using a broth microdilution technique. The antibacterial activity of ITCs was in the order sulforaphane > sulforaphene > phenylethyl ITC > erucin > benzyl ITC > iberin > I3C > allyl ITC > phenyl ITC > hexyl ITC. The susceptibility of fish pathogens to ITCs was in the order of V. harveyi > E. tarda > P. damselae > S. parauberis > S. iniae > V. ichthyoenteri. Antimicrobial activity (MIC) of radish root hydrolysate was 0.250 mg/mL against S. iniae, 0.438 mg/mL against S. parauberis, and 0.500 mg/mL against both E. tarda and V. harveyi. The aliphatic ITCs were potent inhibitors of the growth of fish pathogens, followed by aromatic ITCs and indolyl ITC. The presence of a double bond in the chemical structure of ITCs decreased antibacterial activity, while ITCs with a thiol (-S-) group and a longer carbon chain increased antibacterial activity. These results suggest that ITCs have strong antibacterial activities and may be useful in the prevention of fish pathogens.
