Laser Cladding of WC/T-800 Cermet: Fabrication, Microstructure and Wear Properties

  • This study fabricated a WC/T-800 cermet coating layer with Co-Mo-Cr (T-800) powder and WC powder using laser cladding, and analyzed its microstructure, hardness and wear properties. For comparison, casted bulk T-800 was used. Laser cladded WC/T-800 cermet coating layer showed circular WC phases in the Co matrix, and dendritic laves phases. The average laves phase size in the cermet coating layer and bulk T-800 measured as 7.9 ㎛ and 60.6 ㎛, respectively, indicating that the cermet coating layer had a relatively finer laves phase. Upon conducting a wear test, the cermet coating layer added with WC showed better wear resistance. In the case of laser cladded WC/T-800 cermet coating layer, abrasion wear was observed; on the contrary, the bulk T-800 showed pulled out laves phases. Based on the above findings, the WC/T-800 cermet coating layer using laser cladding and the relationship between its microstructure and wear behavior were discussed.

  • The properties of the detonation sprayed cermet coating are investigated through the mechanical, corrosion and erosion test. The test results are also compared with the properties of the substrate materials, STS 329J1, dual phase stainless steel and the plasma sprayed cermet coatings. The two kinds of carbide cermet power, WC+NiCr, Cr$_3$C$_2$+NiCr were used in this experiment. The experimental results showed that the anti-corrosive and anti-erosive properties of the detonation sprayed cermet coatings are superior to the plasma sprayed cermet coatings. The WC+NiCr cermet coating appears to be more effective than Cr$_3$C$_2$+NiCr cermet coating in abrasive erosion environment, whereas the Cr$_3$C$_2$+NiCr cermet coatings are more effective in cavitation erosion environment.

  • This study investigates the microstructure and wear properties of cermet (ceramic + metal) coating materials manufactured using high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process. Three types of HVOF coating layers are formed by depositing WC-12Co, WC-20Cr-7Ni, and Cr3C2-20NiCr (wt.%) powders on S45C steel substrate. The porosities of the coating layers are $1{\pm}0.5%$ for all three specimens. Microstructural analysis confirms the formation of second carbide phases of $W_2C$, $Co_6W_6C$, and $Cr_7C_3$ owing to decarburizing of WC phases on WC-based coating layers. In the case of WC-12Co coating, which has a high ratio of $W_2C$ phase with high brittleness, the interface property between the carbide and the metal binder slightly decreases. In the $Cr_3C_2-20CrNi$ coating layer, decarburizing almost does not occur, but fine cavities exist between the splats. The wear loss occurs in the descending order of $Cr_3C_2-20NiCr$, WC-12Co, and WC-20Cr-7Ni, where WC-20Cr-7Ni achieves the highest wear resistance property. It can be inferred that the ratio of the carbide and the binding properties between carbide-binder and binder-binder in a cermet coating material manufactured with HVOF as the primary factors determine the wear properties of the cermet coating material.

  • Kinik Company pioneered diamond pad conditioners protected by DLC barrier ($DiaShield^{(R)}$ Coating) back in 1999 (Sung & Lin, US Patent 6,368,198). Kink also evaluated Cermet Composite Coating (CCC or $C^3$, patent pending) with a composition that grades from a metallic (e.g. stainless steel) interlayer to a ceramic (e.g. $Al_2O_3$ or SiC) exterior. The metallic interlayer can form metallurgical bond with metallic matrix on the diamond pad conditioner. The ceramic exterior is both wear and corrosion resistant. The gradational design of $C^3$ coating will assure its strong adherence to the substrate because there is no weak boundary between coating and substrate.

고온용 서밋 태양선택흡수막의 증착 (Deposition of Cermet Solar Selective Coatings for High Temperature Applications)

  • Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a special direct current (dc) magnetron sputtering technology. The typical films structures from surface to bottom substrate were measured to be an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Cr-CrO cermet layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coating were absorptance (${\alpha}$) = 0.95 and emittance (${\varepsilon}$) = 0.10 ($100^{\circ}C$). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) image showed that Cr-CrO cermet film was very smooth and their grain size was also very small The results of thermal stability test showed that the Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings were stable for use at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

  • 수소투과금속인 tantalum과 세라믹 지지체로 $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ)를 이용하여 cermet 수소분리막을 제조하였다. Ta/YSZ cermet 분리막은 헬륨분위기에서의 예비소결과 고진공 하에서의 본소결을 통해 제조하였으며, 소결 및 밀봉 과정에서 발생하는 불순물은 연마를 통해 제거 가능하였다. 이렇게 제조된 분리막은 tantalum의 연속상이 잘 발달된 치밀구조를 보였다. 수소 해리를 위해 팔라듐 코팅을 한 Ta/YSZ 분리막을 이용하여 $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$의 범위에서 수소투과실험을 수행하였다. $300^{\circ}C$에서 분리막에 균열이 형성되었고 Pd 코팅층은 몇 곳이 박리되었다. XRD 결과는 tantalum이 수소와 반응하여 $Ta_2H$가 생성되는 것을 보여주며, $Ta_2H$에 인한 격자 팽창이 분리막의 결함을 초래하였다.

  • High velocity oxy-fuel thermally sprayed coating of the WC-Co cermet material is a well-established process for modifying the surface properties of the structural components exposed to the corrosive and wear attacks. The hard WC phase in the coating resists to the wear while the soft metallic Co increases the adhesive and cohesive bonding properties. The coating properties deposited by the HVOF process are greatly dependent on the feedstock materials and processing parameters. The effects of the feedstock material and process coating parameters including the in-flight particle parameters and resultant coating microstructures were observed in this paper.

아연-0.2%알루미늄합금 용융도금액 중에서 용사층의 내구성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Durability of Sprayed Coating Layer in the Molten Zn-0.2% Al Alloy Bath)

  • Sink roll has been used in molten Zn-0.2%Al alloy bath of continuous galvanizing line in sinking and stabilizing process of the steel strip in molten metal bath. In this process, although the scraper scraps off the sink roll surface, the dross compounds is builded up on the sink roll surface and the life time of the sink roll is shorten by the dross compounds. The present study was investigated the application of the spray coating layer on sink roll body for improving durability In molten Zn-0.2%Al alloy. Through the durability tests in molten Zn-0.2%Al alloy with various ceramic and cermet coating layer, the optimum bond and top coating material was obtained. As the results, the system of STS430F base metal, WC-l7Co bond and $ZrO_2-SiO_2$ top coating was clarified to be the best quality of durability in molten Zn-0.2%Al alloy.
