  • Cermet membrane was fabricated with tantalum as hydrogen-permeable metal and $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) as ceramic supporter. Ta/YSZ cermet membrane was prepared through pre-sintering in He atmosphere and then main sintering under high vacuum and the impurities to originate from sintering and brazing could be removed by mechanical polishing. As-prepared membrane showed dense structure with continuous channel of tantalum. Hydrogen permeation experiment was conducted in the region of $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ using Ta/YSZ membrane coated with Pd for hydrogen dissociation. The crack in membrane was formed at $300^{\circ}C$ and the Pd coating layer has flaked off in spots. XRD results showed that tantalum reacted with hydrogen to form $Ta_2H$. The lattice expansion by $Ta_2H$ caused deterioration for membrane.

  • For the fabrication of titanium diboride($TiB_2$)- based cermet as applications of cutting tools and wear resistant materials, a binder metal with good mechanical properties and sinterability is essential. In this study, SUS316L was chosen for the binder metal to obtain a new $TiB_2$ cermet with superior hardness and toughness.$TiB_2$-SUS316L cermets were densified to relative density of more than 99% by pressureless sintering at temperature above $1650^{\circ}C$ The flexural strength was up to 1290MPa at 10vo1%SUS316L cermet in spite of the formation of $Fe_2$B phase during the sintering. The fracture toughness was obtained up to $6MPam^{1/2}$ with Victors hardness over 18Gpa. These hardness and fracture toughness combinations are better than those of conventional cermet. The high temperature strength remarkably decreased by the plastic deformations of SUS316L binder phase at nearby $800^{\circ}C$ .

  • Properties of $B_4C/Al$ cermets were studied as a function of atmosphere during infiltration and post-heat treatment. The cermet A(infiltrated at $1100{\circ}C$/10 min under vacuum) had 19.4 wt% of Al but the cermet B(infiltratd at $1080{\circ}C$/10 min under a flowing argon) showed 14.4 wt% of Al. It indicated that the reaction between $B_4C$ and Al underwent slower under vacuum than under a flowing argon. The cermet B as infiltrated showed the density of 2.65 $g/cm^3$, the MOR of 503 MPa and the Young's Modulus of 237 GPa, but the post-heat treatment at $900{\circ}C$ for 8h under a flowing Ar gave rise to the cermet with the density of 2.65 $g/cm^3$, the MOR of 296 MPa, the Young's Modulus of 300 GPa. The cermet B showed better properties than the cermet A. Changes in compositions of the cermets by the post-heat treatment were observed qualitatively by XRD and SEM, the amount of Al was determined by analysis of its DSC curve.

  • The effects of boron or manganese added as $B_4C$, Mn, $TiB_2$, B on TiC-30vo1.%$Ni_3Al$ cermet sintered at 1380 and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, were examined in relation with shrinkage, relative density, microstructure, lattice parameter, hardness and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$). The results are summarized as follows: 1) The highest shrink-age showed about 30.5% in the specimen added B$_4$C and the maximum relative density was about 99% in the specimen added $TiB_2$; 2) The grains of TiC were grown during sintering and made the surrounding structure by adding boron and manganese. The largest grain size showed about $2.8\mutextrm{m}$ in the specimen with boron sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$;3) The lattice parameter of TiC was about $4.325\AA$ and $Ni_3Al$ about $3.592\AA$ by adding other elements; 4) The highest hardness was about $1100kgf/\textrm{mm}^2$ in the specimen with B4C; 5) The fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) showed about $15MNm^{-3/2}$ in the specimen added $TiB_2$.
