This study was performed to investigate the changes of total and soluble ${\beta}$-glucan contents, purity, and physical characteristics of three heated barley varieties: Saessalbori (SSB), Saechalssalbori (SCSB), and Hinchalssalbori (HCSB). The barleys were heated at different temperatures of 110, 120, 130, 140 and $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The total ${\beta}$-glucan contents of raw SSB, SCSB, and HCSB were 8.40, 7.77 and 8.28%, and the soluble ${\beta}$-glucan contents were 4.79, 4.14, and 4.61%, respectively. After heating at $130^{\circ}C$, the total ${\beta}$-glucan contents increased to 11.59, 14.6, and 13.36%, as did the soluble ${\beta}$-glucan contents to 4.21, 7.96, and 7.23%, respectively. The purities of soluble ${\beta}$-glucan of the raw barleys were 35.11, 32.74 and 25.62%, but after heating at $150^{\circ}C$, it increased to 83.43, 91.02, and 88.01%, respectively. The molecular weight and viscosity of the ${\beta}$-glucan solution decreased with increasing heating temperature. The re-solubility of raw barley ${\beta}$-glucan was about 50%, but it was increased to 97% with increasing heating temperature. These results suggest that heating of ${\beta}$-glucan can improve the utilization of barley ${\beta}$-glucan.
Rice blast is one of the most serious disease threatening stable production of rice. Breeding of resistant cultivars has been used as the most effective and useful method to controll rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae. To collect rice blast isolates in fields and test their pathogenicity on new cultivars are important for establishment of new resistant cultivars breeding program of rice. Pathotypes of Korean rice blast isolates have been categorized to Korean differential race system developed in 1985. However, it is little known about genetic background of Korean differential cultivars, so that it is hard to understand for relationship between each pathogen and each host plant at genetic level. In this study, we suggested necessity of a new differential system by analyzing pathogenic responses between 24 monogenic rice lines and 200 Korean rice blast isolates. In addition, we determined the nine representative resistant genes based on the resistance responses of the monogenic lines to rice blast isolates, indexed resistant responses of the monogenic lines to ten representative rice blast isolates and selected 30 Korean representative rice blast isolates proper to Korean system. We think the newly developed differential race system can be broadly used to select resistant cultivars to rice blast in Korea.

Climate change causes changes in rainfall patterns, temperature and drought frequency. Climate change impact influences on water management and crop production. It is critical issue in agricultural industry. Rice is a staple cereal crop in South Korea and Korea uses a ponding system for its paddy fields which requires a significant amount of water. In addition, water supply has inter-relationship with crop production which indicates water productivity. Therefore, it is important to assess overall impacts of climate change on water resource and crop production. A water footprint concept is an indicator which shows relationship between water use and crop yield. In addition, it generally composed of three components depending on water resources: green, blue, grey water. This study analyzed the change trend of water footprint of paddy rice under the climate change. The downscaled climate data from HadGEM3-RA based on RCP 8.5 scenario was applied as future periods (2020s, 2050s, 2080s), and historical climate data was set to base line (1990s). Depending on agro-climatic zones, Suwon and Jeonju were selected for study area. A yield of paddy rice was simulated by using FAO-AquaCrop 5.0, which is a water-driven crop model. Model was calibrated by adjusting parameters and was validated by Mann-Whitney U test statistically. The means of water footprint were projected increase by 55 % (2020s), 51 % (2050s) and 48 % (2080s), respectively, from the baseline value of $767m^2/ton$ in Suwon. In case of Jeonju, total water footprint was projected to increase by 46 % (2020s), 45 % (2050s), 12 % (2080s), respectively, from the baseline value of $765m^2/ton$. The results are expected to be useful for paddy water management and operation of water supply system and apply in establishing long-term policies for agricultural water resources.

Background: Adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. ma-yuen Stapf.) is an important medicinal and cereal crop that contains high levels of protein, fatty acids and crude fiber, as well as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, minerals, and essential amino acids. Despite its economic significance, little is known about biological activity in adlay sprouts. This study investigated the total free sugar, polyphenol and flavonoid content, and antioxidative activity in adlay sprouts at different growth stages. Methods and Results: The total free sugar and coixol content of germinated adlay sprouts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. The total phenolic content was measured by the Folin and Denis, and flavonoid content by the Davis method. Antioxidative activity was tested by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl method. All measured component, including total phenolic and coixol content ($2.71{\pm}0.02mg/g$ and $59.70{\pm}0.01mg/g$), and antioxidant capacity ($IC_{50}$; $453.93{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) were highest in 3 day old adlay sprouts. In contrast, total free sugar and flavonoid content (3.02% and $0.60{\pm}0.02mg/g$) were highest in sprouts at 5 days after sowing. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation between antioxidative activity and total polyphenol content (r = 0.902, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Adlay sprouts between 3 days and 5 days following germination contain high levels of functional components and free sugar. This study therefore suggests that adlay sprouts can be developed as a valuable health-promoting food and a good source of natural antioxidants.

Accurate and optimal water supply to cereal crop is critical in growing stalks and producing maximum yields. Excessive soil moisture may cause nutrient deficiencies and oxygen deficiency. Excessive soil water during crop growth stages results in decrease of yields. In Korea, the largest agricultural lands are paddy fields. Recently, upland crops are cultivated in paddy field soils to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to success this policy, it is necessary to fully understand crop response to excessive soil moisture condition from paddy field soils. Adzuki bean is one of major legumes which provide protein in daily diet. Adzuki bean has been well know its weakness to excessive soil moisture condition, In order to obtain optimal yields of adzuki bean from paddy field cultivation, it is necessary to understand response of adzuki bean under different soil moisture conditions. This study investigated characteristics of growths, yields and response degree of water stress from adzuki bean. Three cultivars were selected for this study; Chungju, Hongeon, and Arari. All adzuki beans were cultivated in a paddy field which was divided into three sections with different soil moistures. The paddy field was located in Milyang, Gyeongsangnam during 2016. One section of the paddy field had the greatest average soil moisture content as 35.1% during adzuki bean cultivation (very poor). The second greatest soil moisture section had 32.6% (somewhat poor) and the smallest soil moisture section had 28.9% of soil moisture (somewhat well). During cultivation of three cultivar adzuki beans, soil moisture contents and groundwater levels were monitored. All the characteristics of growth and yield components were measured; height, thickness, 100 seed weights etc. Stress index values were calculated by Stress Day Index (SDI). All cultivars had the greatest yields from somewhat well section. Chungju had the greatest yields throughout all three sections compared to other cultivars. Chungju had 81% greater yield than Hongeon which had the smallest yield from somewhat well section. Arari set in middle from all sections. However there was no significant differences yields from very poor and somewhat poor sections. Leaf SPAD values tended to decrease and stable carbon isotope values increased as soil moisture increased. However, Chungju had no difference across different soil moistures in SPAD and stable carbon isotope values, while Hongeon had the greatest differences across sections. These trends followed by SDI values. Chungju had the smallest SDI values compared to other cultivars, which meant that Chungju was the strongest tolerance against excessive soil moisture than other cultivars. All three cultivars showed severe decrease of yields from very poor and somewhat poor sections. Arari and Hongeon showed great decrease from somewhat well section compared to yields from upland soil. These two cultivars may not be proper cultivating in paddy fields. In conclusion, adzuki bean is very sensitive to soil moisture condition and detailed soil managements are required to obtain optimal yields of adzuki bean from paddy field cultivation.
The occurrence of Rice stripe virus (RSV) has been confirmed in some parts of South Korea. In the current year, this was observed to be limited in the double cropping zones of the southern region. Earlier, RSV occurred largely in the west coast regions of the country, particularly in Gangwha, Gyeonggi-do in 2001; and Buan, Jeollabuk-do and Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do in 2007. This study was carried out to determine the nationwide extent of RSV occurrence by investigating RSV infestations in different latitudes and altitudes. Result revealed a recent reported occurrence of RSV in the southern region (Milyang, latitude $35^{\circ}$), a reported occurrence in the northern region (Cheolwon, latitude $38^{\circ}$) in 2005, and in the middle northern region of the east coast (Goseon, latitude $38^{\circ}$) as newly confirmed from this investigation. Results also confirmed the occurrence of RSV in a wide range of altitude from the plains (Milyang, 17 m altitude) to the alpine regions (Jinbu, 576 m) including the middle mountains (Sangju, altitude 285 m). The RSV occurrence in Jinbu in the alpine region and at Goseong and most of the northern end regions were confirmed only this year. The results of the present study confirmed that RSV is a fast-spreading disease in rice plant cultivation regions of the entire country.
This study aims to understand the growth and changes of nutritional composition in five winter forage crops including barley, wheat, oat, rye and triticale. In Korea, the winter-season cultivation of the crops could enhance land use efficiency and improve the global competitiveness of domestic livestock industry by providing high quality forage. Total content of crude protein in plants decreased after heading. Leaves and spikes had high crude protein while stem showed the lowest with less than 7%. Contents of Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) in plants decreased with time after heading. Stem showed much greater content of ADF than leaves and spikes. There was linear relationship between ADF contents and ratios of stem weight and total weight. Contents of Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) also decreased with time after heading. Stem contained much higher NDF than leaves and spikes. There was a linear relationship between NDF contents and ratios of stem weight and total weight. Relative Feed Value (RFV) increased with maturing of spikes after heading in barley, wheat, oat and triticale. There was a negative relationship between Relative feed value and ratios of stem weight and total weight.

To obtain accurate and repeatable analyses using NIR technology it is important to select an NIR instrument and / or its sample presentation attachments which allow the operator to minimize sampling errors without compromising the benefits of NIR analysis -namely rapid, low cost, minimal sample preparation, minimal structural facilities, minimal hazards. For each sample type and consistency there may be different optimal combinations of instrument, sample presentation attachment, and sample preparation. This paper will consider options available to NIR users in the area of plant and soil analysis and evaluate the potential benefits and disadvantages of crop nutrient diagnoses using laboratory based and airborne imaging techniques.
