Goethite, ${\alpha}$-FeOOH have various applications such as absorbent, pigment and source for magnetic materials. Goethite particles were synthesized in a two step process, where $Fe(OH)_2$ were synthesized in nitrogen atmosphere using $FeSO_4$ as a raw material in the first process, and after that acicular goethite particles were obtained in an air oxidation process of $Fe(OH)_2$ in highly alkaline aqueous solution. Their phase and microstructure were investigated with XRD and FE-SEM. It was found that the morphology of goethite and the ratio of length-to-width (aspect ratio) of acicular goethite are dependent on the some factors such as R value ($OH^-/Fe^{2+}$), air flow rate and pH conditions. In particular, R value has the strongest influence on the synthesized goethite morphology. It is considered that the optimal value R is 4.5 because X-ray diffraction peaks of goethite have the highest intensity at that value. Morphology of goethite particles was controlled by air flow rates, showing that their size and aspect ratio are getting smaller and decrease, respectively as air flow rate increases. The largest goethite particle obtained is about 1,500 nm in length and 150 nm in diameter.

Recently, the demand of labels for product management is increasing, as the automation system becomes more common. the development of functional labels which can be used in various environments has been rapidly proceeded. In the case of a printed circuit board, barcode labels with thermal and chemical stability are generally used due to a high temperature process around $300^{\circ}C$ and chemical cleaning in the manufacturing process. However, the yellowing phenomenon of labels that can lower the resolution of printed barcode image still needs to be prevented. In this study, we prepared a composite coating layer using a silica inorganic binder and a titanium dioxide white pigment, and developed a functional labels with thermal and chemical stability. The silica inorganic binder prepared by sol-gel process was confirmed to show excellent adhesion and abrasion resistance with the polyimide film. The white coating layer could be formed on the polyimide film with mixing the silica inorganic binder and titanium dioxide white pigment. The prepared coating layer showed excellent whiteness and glossiness above $400^{\circ}C$. The excellent chemical stability of the coating layer was also confirmed by the chemical treatment with acidic (pH 1.6) and basic (pH 13.6) cleaners.
Perovskite codoped with chromium and iron have been studied. Samples with $YAl_{0.96}(Cr_{0.04-x}Fe_x)O_3$(x=0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) were prepared by solid state reaction at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 6 h and were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The color of the synthesized pigments were from red to dark brown(in bulk). Up to 0.02 mole $Fe_2O_3$ for substituting $Cr_2O_3$ development of color in lime-glaze gives good red color but as increasing amount of $Fe_2O_3$ and decreasing $Cr_2O_3$ proportionally produce from brownish red to brown. Increasing $Fe_2O_3$ amount lead to weaken crystal field relatively due to have smaller ionic radius than $Cr_2O_3$ ionic one. The UV-vis peaks were shifted to lower wavelength.
In high temperature ceramic glazes, a stable range of pink-red colors that produced $Cr_2O_3-SnO_2-CaO-SiO_2$ pigments were factored by Cassiterite($SnO_2$) and Malayaite($CaSnSiO_5$) by $Cr_2O_3$. The experiment examined the influence of $CrCl_3$, a Sn-Cr substitution added with a mineralizer ($H_3BO_3$), as a chromophore in pigments. The experiment also studied the effect of $H_3BO_3$ (2 wt%) when added to malayaite($CaSnSiO_5$) to see if the crystalline reaction will increase. $Cr_2O_3$ was also substituted with $CrCl_3$ in order to prove how much influence $CrCl_3$ had on the $H_3BO_3$. Malayaite and cassiterite were the basic compound materials and the experiment was conducted both with and without mineralizers (2 wt% of $H_3BO_3$). Each compound was synthesized at 800, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1400, $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Synthesized pigments were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR and UV-Vis. The temperature variation produced two crystal phases that showed the different engaging effects of Cr oxidation. $CrCl_3$ produced a better effect on the malayaite crystal phase, resulting in a more defined pigmentation of the pink-red coloration compared to $Cr_2O_3$.
Nanosized $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphor is prepared using a template method from metal salt impregnated into a crystalline cellulose and is dispersed using a bead mill wet process. The driving force of the surface coating between $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and mica is induced by the Coulomb force. The red phosphor nanosol is effectively coated on mica flakes by the electrostatic interaction between positively charged $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ and negatively charged mica above pH 6. To prepare $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$-coated mica ($Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$), the coating conditions are optimized, including the stirring temperature, pH, calcination temperature, and coating amount (wt%) of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$. In spite of the low luminescence of the $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$, the luminescent property is recovered after calcination above $600^{\circ}C$ and is enhanced by increasing the $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ coating amount. The $Gd_2O_3:Eu/mica$ is characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential measurements, and fluorescence spectrometer analysis.

Spinel pigments, developing black color in high temperature glazes at oxidation or reduction atmosphere, without CoO because of its high price were synthesized by solid solution method. Ten mixed compositions consisted of NiO, MnO, $Fe_2O_3 and $Mn_2O_3$ were fired at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The resulting pigments were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, SEM and UV-vis spectrometer. Structure of the pigments are spinel and particles' shape are spherical or cubic. Glazed tiles containing 5 wt% pigments were fired at $1260^{\circ}C$ and $1240^{\circ}C$ in reduction atmosphere. Color in glazes were analyzed by UV-vis spectrometer. Porcelain (white ware, celadon ware) coated with a ferrous sulfate and ferrous/cobalt sulfate was sintered at 1250℃. The specimens were investigated by HR-XRD, FE-SEM, HR-EDS, and UV-vis spectrophotometer. Through X-ray rietveld quantitative analysis, quartz and mullite were found to be the main phases for white ware, and mullite and plagioclase were found to be the main phases for celadon ware. When the pigment of ferrous/cobalt sulfate was applied, were identified as an andradite phase for celadon ware and a spinel phase for the white ware, and the amorphous phase, respectively. The L* value, which was the brightness of the specimen, was 72.01, 60.92 for white ware and celadon ware, respectively. The ferrous and ferrous/cobalt pigment coated porcelain had L* values of 44.89, 52.27 for white ware and celadon ware, respectively; with a* values of 2.12, 1.40, an d at b* values of 1.45 and 13.79. As for the color of the specimens, it was found that the L* value was greatly affected by the white ware, and the b* value differed greatly depending on the clay. It was thought to be closely related to the production of the secondary phase such as Fe2O3 and andradite phase produced in the surface layer.
For preparation $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$ platelets having 20 $\mu$m in average diameter and 0.2∼0.3 $\mu$m in thickness, we have prepared aluminum hydroxides gel by using aluminum sulfate and sodium sulfate as starting materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of the amount of sodium phosphate on particle size, morphology and thickness of $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$ platelets. When sodium phosphate was not added to aluminum hydroxides gel, most of $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$ platelets had hexagonal shape but the thickness was over 1.0 $\mu$m, and this sample was not adequate for pearlescent pigment. On the other hand, introduction of sodium phosphate caused an increase of aspect ratio (particle diameter/thickness) with a decrease in $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$ platelet thickness.

This study was carried on the phenomena in reactivity with the clay surface according to the thickness of the cobalt component coating. In the coated specimen, it was observed that the cobalt component was spreaded to diffuse with a constant thickness from the surface of it and the diffusion layer at the white porcelain soil was more increased with the increase of the amount of cobalt sulfate than at the celadon porcelain one. It was evaluated that the color of the surface on the coated specimen at the white porcelain soil was changed from grayish blue to blue and the $L^*$ value was decreased from 51.78 to 37.61 and also in the case of the coated specimen in celadon porcelain soil, $L^*$ value was from 53.91 to 38.93 and the color was from dark olive gray to dark gray. The physical properties of the specimen were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscope, Dilatometer, TG-DTA, UV-vis spectrophotometer and HRDPM.
