  • The effect of fabrication variables and microstructures on the compressive strength of open cell alumina zirconia and silicon nitride ceramics fabricated by polymeric sponge method was investigated. Bulk density and compressive strength of open cell ceramics were mainly affected by coating characteristics of ceramic slurry on polymeric sponge that controlled a shape thickness and defect of the struts. Sintering temperature was optimized for enhancement of strut strength and compressive strength of open cell ceramics. Relative density and compressive strength behaviors were relatively well matched with the predicted values. Open cell ceramics of lower relative density below 0.1 prepared by first relatively well matched with the predicted values. Open cell ceramics of lower relative density below 0.1 prepared by first coating of ceramic slurry had thin triangular prismatic struts that were often broken or longitudinally cracked. With an application of second coating of slurry shape of struts was transformed into thickner cylindrical one and defects in struts were healed but the relative density increased over 0.2 Open cell zirconia had both the highest bulk density and compressive strength and alumina had the lowest compressive strength while silicon nitrides showed relatively high compressive strength and the lowest density. Based upon the analysis open cell silicon nitride was expected to be one of potential structural ceramics with light weight.

  • Four kinds of $Si_3N_4$-based ceramic cutting tools with different sintering time were fabricated to investigante the effect of sintering time on the microstructure, mechanical properties, grain sizes and the cutting performance. An endeavor was also made to determine the relation among mechanical property, Brain size and tool life. $Si_3N_4$ home made cutting tool sintered for 1 hour under $1760^{\circ}$ temperature and 25MPa pressure showed the best cutting performance among selected ceramic tools during machining both Bray cast iron and heat treated SCM440. Multiple linear regression model was used to estimate the tool lift from mechanical property, grain size and showed good result. It was also shown that hardness imposed the biggest offect on tool life.

  • Ceramics from Taean shipwreck were studied to investigate the deterioration by soluble salts and desalination pattern according to each ceramic characterization. NaCl crystals were found as a crystal growth on the ceramic microstructure and deteriorated to push off the glaze layer of some Puncheong ware sample. As a result of monitoring the desalination pattern of ceramics for 74days, the earthenware sample with big pores and no glaze removed soluble salts so fast, but Puncheong ware and Whiteware samples removed lots of soluble salts slowly and continuously. Generally, it takes long time to remove soluble salts from porcelains, due to small pores and glaze, but the long-term desalination probably can cause the damage on the surface layer such like glaze. As some soluble salts still remains in the ceramic microstructures after desalination, it is very important to control and keep the relative humidity stable through the proper storage. There are various ceramic deterioration patterns by soluble salts. Therefore, it needs to select the desalination method of ceramics from shipwreck, considering the material characteristics and the production techniques.

  • A low temperature processing route for fabricating porous SiC ceramics by carbothermal reduction has been demonstrated. Effects of expandable microsphere content, sintering temperature, filler content, and carbon source on microstructure, porosity, compressive strength, cell size, and cell density were investigated in the processing of porous silicon carbide ceramics using expandable microspheres as a pore former. A higher microsphere content led to a higher porosity and a higher cell density. A higher sintering temperature resulted in a decreased porosity because of an enhanced densification. The addition of inert filler increased the porosity, but decreased the cell density. The compressive strength of the porous ceramics decreased with increasing the porosity. Typical compressive strength of porous SiC ceramics with ${\sim}70%$ porosity was ${\sim}13 MPa$.

  • [ $Pb(Zr_{0.4}Ti_{0.6}O_{3}\;and\;Pb(Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4})O_{3}$ ] paste were made and alternately screen-printed on the $Al_{2}O_{3}$ substrates. We have introduced a press-treatment to obtain a good densification of screen printed films. The porosity of the thick films was decreased with increasing the applied pressure and the thick films pressed at 60 MPa showed the dense microstructure and thickness of about $76\;{\mu}m$. The remanent polarization and coercive field increased with increasing applied pressure and the values for the PZT thick films pressed at 60 MPa were $17.04{\mu}C/cm^{2}$ and 78.09 kV/cm, respectively.

  • Dense $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials with various grain size were produced by sintering-HIP treatment and by gas-pressure sintering. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation fracture and indentation strength method for both ceramics with various grain size. The effect of the grain size on the fracture toughness was evaluated, and the correlation between fracture toughness and mechanical properties such as hardness, Young\`s modulus and flexural strength of these ceramic were also investigated. The highest fracture toughness of around 6.7 MPa.m(sup)1/2 was obtained in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics with grain size of 1.58${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With a larger grain size of $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics, the fracture toughness was generally increased. The increased fracture toughness of these ceramic also improved the flexural strength although the hardness decreased considerably. Similar results were obtained in grain size and mechanical properties on both $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials.

  • In last two decades, an impressive progress has been recorded in terms of developing new materials or refining existing material composition/microstructure in order to obtain better performance in biomedical applications. The success of such efforts clearly demands better understanding of various concepts, e.g. biocompatibility, host response, cell-biomaterial interaction. In this article, we review the fundamental understanding that is required with respect to biomaterials development, as well as various materials and their properties, which are relevant in applications, such as hard tissue replacement. A major emphasize has been placed to present various design aspects, in terms of materials processing, of ceramics and polymer based biocomposites, Among the bioceramic composites, the research results obtained with Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based biomaterials with metallic (Ti) or ceramic (Mullite) reinforcements as well as $SiO_2-MgO-Al_2O_3-K_2O-B_2O_3-F$ glass ceramics and stabilized $ZrO_2$ based bioinert ceramics are summarized. The physical as well as tribological properties of Polyethylene (PE) based hybrid biocomposites are discussed to illustrate the concept on how can the physical/wear properties be enhanced along with biocompatibility due to combined addition of bioinert and bioactive ceramic to a bioinert polymeric matrix. The tribological and corrosion properties of some important orthopedic metallic alloys based on Ti or Co-Cr-Mo are also illustrated. At the close, the future perspective on orthopedic biomaterials development and some unresolved issues are presented.

  • The microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of dolomite type borates, $CaZr(BO_3)_2$ ceramics prepared by conventional mixed oxide method were explored. The sintering temperature of $CaZr(BO_3)_2$ ceramics could be reduced from $1150^{\circ}C\;to\;925^{\circ}C$ with little amount of sintering additives. Microwave dielectric properties of 3 wt% $Bi_2O_3-CuO$ added $CaZr(BO_3)_2$ ceramics sintered at $925^{\circ}C$ were $K{\approx}10.4,\;Q{\times}f{\approx}80,000GHz\;and\;TCF{\approx}+2ppm/^{\circ}C$. Thus obtained LTCC tape was co-fired with Ag paste for compatibility test and revealed no sign of Ag reaction with the ceramics. Therefore, $CaZr(BO_3)_2$ ceramics is considered as a possible candidate material for low temperature co-fired multilayer devices.

  • To prevent an interfacial reaction between the anode and the electrolyte layer during the conventional high-temperature co-firing process, an anode-supported type cell with a thin-film electrolyte was fabricated by low-temperature ceramic thick film coating process. Ni-GDC cermet composite was used as the anode material and YSZ was used as the electrolyte material. Open circuit voltage and maximum power density were found to strongly depend on the surface uniformity of the anode functional layer. By optimizing the microstructure of the anode functional layer, the open circuit voltage and maximum powder density of the cell increased to 1.11 V and $1.35W/cm^2$, respectively, at $750^{\circ}C$. When a GDC barrier layer was applied between the YSZ electrolyte and the LSCF cathode, the cell showed good stability, with almost no degradation up to 100 h. Anode-supported type SOFCs with high performance and good stability were fabricated using a coating process.

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a promising coating process to produce ceramic oxide on valve metals such as Al, Mg and Ti. The PEO coating is carried out with a dilute alkaline electrolyte solution using a similar technique to conventional anodizing. The coating process involves multiple process parameters which can influence the surface properties of the resultant coating, including power mode, electrolyte solution, substrate, and process time. In this study, ceramic oxide coatings were prepared on commercial Al alloy in electrolytes with different KOH concentrations (0.5 ~ 4 g/L) by plasma electrolytic oxidation. Microstructural and electrochemical characterization were conducted to investigate the effects of electrolyte concentration on the microstructure and electrochemical characteristics of PEO coating. It was revealed that KOH concentration exert a great influence not only on voltage-time responses during PEO process but also on surface morphology of the coating. In the voltage-time response, the dielectric breakdown voltage tended to decrease with increasing KOH concentration, possibly due to difference in solution conductivity. The surface morphology was pancake-like with lower KOH concentration, while a mixed form of reticulate and pancake structures was observed for higher KOH concentration. The KOH concentration was found to have little effect on the electrochemical characteristics of coating, although PEO treatment improved the corrosion resistance of the substrate material significantly.
