  • This paper presents mechanical analysis of gas turbine generator (113MVA, $3{\phi}$, 2P, 0.9PF, F class, 3600rpm, 60Hz, 13.8kV, 4.72kA, Air-Cooling) field coil deformation. Rotor end coil deformation is only appeared on turbine end but collector end coil is normal. Expansion direction of end coil is tangential not axial. Deformation appears more severe at top turn. Retaining ling is expanded by centrifugal force of coil and itself. In case friction coefficient between coil top surface and retaining ring insulation inner surface is small, coil end length ${\ell}$ does not change. However, in case friction coefficient big condition, coil end is expanded ${\Delta}{\ell}$ due to start and stop. Deformation is assumed about 30mm by watching photograph inner surface of retaining ring is coated by Teflon at manufacturing condition. Usually Teflon coating insulation surface is small friction coefficient. It's value 0.08${\sim}$0.15. However it's value exceeds more than 0.297. Since top turn deformation appears. The distortion and subsequent failure have occurred because of the lack of a sufficient slip-plane between the top field coil conductors and the inside surface of the retaining ring insulation on the turbine end of the field-winding.

  • $Al_2O_3$, SiC reinforced Al matrix composites were fabricated by centrifugal spray casting method and their wear resistance characteristics have been studied. Particles are generally uniformly distributed in the microstructure of as-cast specimens. In order to investigate the effect of secondary deformation, hot rolling was performed for each specimen of pure Al matrix composites with a reduction of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, respectively. Microstructure of specimen showed that particle distribution density and hardness increased because of increasing of reduction ratio. Wear test with a various sliding velocity of 1.98, 2.38, 2.88 and 3.53m/sec showed that the wear resistance characterization of composite improved remarkably compared to the normal alloy and performs without reinforced particles. Microstructural observation for the worn surface of pure Al specimens without particles showed that a change in wear mechanism seemed to separate layer by surface fatigue. In other case of Al composite reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ and SiC, the grinder type of wear mechanism was shown.

  • Composite air spindles are appropriate for the high-speed and the high-precision machining as small hole drilling of printed circuit board (PCB) or wafer cutting for manufacturing semiconductors because of the low rotational inertia, the high damping ratio and the high fundamental natural frequency of composite shaft. The axial load and stiffness of composite air spindles fur drilling operation are determined by the thrust ben ring composed of the air supply part mounted on the housing and the rotating part mounted on the rotating shaft. At high-speed rotation, the rotating part of the thrust bearing should be designed considering the stresses induced by centrifugal force as well as the axial stiffness and the natural frequency of the rotating shaft to void the shaft from failure due to the centrifugal force and resonant vibration. In this work, the air supply part of the thrust bearing was designed considering the bending stiffness of the bearing and the applied load. The rotating part of the thrust bearing was designed through finite element analysis considering the cutting forces during manufacturing as well as the static and dynamic characteristics under both the axial and con trifugal forces during high-speed rotation.

  • Permanent deformation plays a key role in performance based earthquake resistant design. In order to estimate permanent deformation after earthquake, it is essential to secure reliable response history analysis(RHA) as well as earthquake scenario. This study focuses on permanent deformation of an inverted T-type wall under earthquake. The study is composed of two separate parts. The first one is on the verification of RHA and the second one is on an effect of input earthquake motion. The former is discussed in this paper and the latter in the companion paper. The verification is conducted via geotechnical dynamic centrifuge test in prototype scale. Response of wall stem, ground motions behind the wall obtained from RHA matched pretty well with physical test performed under centrifugal acceleration of 50g. The rigorously verified RHA is used for parametric study to investigate an effect of input earthquake motion selection in the companion paper.

  • For physical experiments like analogue modeling that designed for studying geological deformation, reproducibility of the deformation is important to guarantee the reliability of the experiment. In this study, the normal fault generated by extensional stress is benchmarked using a sand box model. The scaling factors for the modeling test are considered and the experiments are conducted by setting the appropriate material, extensional stress, and boundary condition in the same way as in a benchmark experiment. In addition, a large centrifuge facility is used to vary the centrifugal acceleration and extension rate in the same sized model to account for the scaling factors of the physical quantity during extensional behavior. At 1 g benchmark condition and a centrifugal field at 10 g, a constant rate of the extensional stress is implemented and the topographic evolution is reliably measured. In this study, the reliability and applicability of large centrifuge model tests are evaluated for formulating experiments designed to study geological deformation.

  • In this Paper, we present an efficient method for finite element vibration analysis of constantly rotating structures with cyclic symmetry, which are deformed to some considerable extent by centrifugal force, Coriolis force and operating load, and vibrate due to several types of exciting forces. A structure with cyclic symmetry is composed of circumferentially repeated substructures with the same geometry. Being only one substructure modeled. the dynamic characteristics of the structure can be analyzed systematically. rapidly and exactly using discrete Fourier transform by means of a computer with small memory.

  • In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of excavated earth retaining wall with the depth of excavation and different types of wall(aluminum, steel panel). Jumunjin standard sand was used for foundation soil. The raining method was adopted to form the required relative density of the model ground. The lateral earth pressure measured from tests were compared with estimated active earth pressure by Rankine's theory. The test results have shown that the earth pressure acting on the retaining wall and the rotation displacement of the wall are influenced by the depth of excavation and the type of wall. It was found from the test results that the deformation of the wall increases with the depth of excavation.

  • Recently there has been increase in need for high precision and high speed machining due to economic and environmental reasons. It is a very important issue that determines the optimal preload that is to be applied to bearings in order to satisfy the performance required in bearings according to its operation conditions. This study introduces a variable preload device that can automatically adjust the preload applied in a machine tool spindle using centrifugal force as opposed in existing rubber instrument. In this study, the deformation of the rubber device by the centrifugal force is analyzed and it is discussed that the proposed device can be worked properly through changes of the collar density.

  • This paper presents a beam finite element model of a vibrate wind blade in large elastic deformation subjected to the aerodynamic, centrifugal, gyroscopic and gravity loads. The gyroscopic loads applied to the blade are induced by her simultaneous vibration and rotation. The proposed beam finite element model is based on a simplex interpolation method and it is mainly intended to the numerical analysis of wind blades vibration in large elastic deformation. For this purpose, the theory of the sheared beams and the finite element method are combined to develop the algebraic equations system governing the three-dimensional motion of blade vibration. The applicability of the theoretical approach is elucidated through an original case study. Also, the static deformation of the used wind blade is assessed by appropriate software using a solid finite element model in order to show the effectiveness of the obtained results. To simulate the nonlinear dynamic response of wind blade, the predictor-corrector Newmark scheme is applied and the stability of numerical process is approved during a large time of blade functioning. Finally, the influence of the modified geometrical stiffness on the amplitudes and frequencies of the wind blade vibration induced by the sinusoidal excitation of gravity is analyzed.
