Design Methodology for Transformers Including Integrated and Center-tapped Structures for LLC Resonant Converters

  • A design methodology for transformers including integrated and center-tapped structures for LLC resonant converters is proposed. In the LLC resonant converter, the resonant inductor in the primary side can be merged in the transformer as a leakage inductance. And, the absence of the secondary filter inductor creates low voltage stress on the secondary rectifiers and is cost-effective. A center-tapped structure of the transformer secondary side is widely used in commercial applications because of its higher efficiency and lower cost than full-bridge structures in the rectifying stages. However, this transformer structure has problems of resonance imbalance and transformer inefficiency caused by leakage inductance imbalance in the secondary side and the position of the air-gap in the transformer, respectively. In this paper, gain curves and soft-switching conditions are derived by first harmonic approximation (FHA) and operating circuit simulation. In addition, the effects of the transformer including integrated and center-tapped structures are analyzed by new FHA models and simulations to obtain an optimal design. Finally, the effects of the air-gap position are analyzed by an electromagnetic field simulator. The proposed analysis and design are verified by experimental results with a 385W LLC resonant converter.

Compact UWB Bandpass Filter as Cascaded Center-Tapped CRLH Transmission-Line ZORs for Improved Stopband

  • The design of a new compact UWB bandpass filter is proposed, which has cascaded center-tapped microstrip composite right/left-handed transmission-line zeroth-order resonators (CRLH-TL ZORs). In an attempt to reduce the size, instead of the conventional half-wavelength resonators or periodic and multiple CRLH-TL cells, only one cell ZOR geometry is adopted as each resonator in the filter. Additionally, two center-tapped ZORs are coupled to increase the slope of the skirt. Besides, stepped impedance matching parts are placed in the paths to the input and output ports to enhance passband and stopband performances. The proposed filter is shown to have the overall size of $0.69{\lambda}_g{\times}0.70{\lambda}_g$, the insertion loss much less than 1 dB, and an acceptable return loss performance in the predicted and measured results.

ZVS Operating Range Extension Method for High-Efficient High Frequency Linked ZVS-PWM DC-DC Power Converter

  • In this paper, a full bridge edge-resonant zero voltage mode based soft-switching PWM DC-DC power converter with a high frequency center tapped transformer link stage is presented from a practical point of view. The power MOSFETS operating as synchronous rectifier devices are implemented in the rectifier center tapped stage to reduce conduction power losses and also to extend the transformer primary side power MOSFETS ZVS commutation area from the rated to zero-load without a requirement of a magnetizing current. The steady-state operation of this phase-shift PWM controlled power converter is described in comparison with a conventional ZVS phase-shift PWM DC-DC converter using the diodes rectifier. Moreover, the experimental results of the switching power losses analysis are evaluated and discussed in this paper. The practical effectiveness of the ZVS phase-shift PWM DC-DC power converter treated here is actually proved by using 2.5kW-32kHz breadboard circuit. An actual efficiency of this converter is estimated in experiment and is achieved as 97$\%$ at maximum.

탭 선로의 새로운 등가 회로를 이용한 결합 선로 대역 통과 필터 설계 (Design of Coupled-line Band-pass Filter Using New Equivalent Circuit of Tapped-line)

  • 본 논문에서는 높은 커플링 값을 필요로 하는 대역 통과 필터의 입력부에 응용되는 탭 선로의 등가회로를 제시하였고, 그 변수 값을 수식적으로 제시한다. 탭 선로의 등가 회로는 개방형 스터브와 부가적인 전송 선로를 나타내어지며, 개방형 스터브와 전송 선로의 전기적 길이는 공진기의 선로 임피던스와 임버터 값으로 구할 수 있다. 이러한 탭 선로의 새로운 등가 회로는 간단한 방법으로 탭 선로를 이용한 필터 설계를 가능하게 하며 이론적으로 근접한 결과를 얻을 수 있게 한다. 새로운 탭 선로의 등가회로를 이용한 결합 선로 대역 통과 필터는 중심 주파수 5.8 GHz 에서 1.97 dB의 삽입 손실과 18.5 dB의 반사 손길 특성을 나타낸다.

  • 본 논문에서는 대역 통과 필터의 입력부에 응용되는 탭 선로의 등가 회로를 제시하였고, 그 변수 값을 수식적으로 제시한다. 탭 선로의 등가 회로는 개방형 스터브와 음의 전기적 길이를 갖는 전송 선로로 구현하며, 탭 선로의 위치와 공진기 길이는 공진기의 임피던스와 인버터 값으로 구할 수 있다. 이러한 새로운 등가 회로에 의한 설계는 기존의 방법에 비해 이론적으로 근접한 결과를 얻을 수 있게 한다. 새로운 탭 선로의 등가 회로를 이용한 헤어핀 대역 통과 필터는 중심 주파수 2 GHz에서 1.1 dB의 삽입 손실과 20 dB의 반사 손실 특성을 나타낸다.

  • In this paper, a new half-bridge zeta converter employing a center-tapped rectifier is proposed. The proposed converter provides a bidirectional powering path in the rectifier. As a result, its improved rectifier voltage waveform reduces the output filter inductor size. Also, it maintains a wide ZVS range due to the characteristic of the conventional single-ended half-bridge zeta converter. The operational principles, the theoretical analysis, and the design considerations of the proposed converter are analyzed. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, experimental results from a 180W prototype are presented.

  • This paper is research result for a development of solar cell silicon ingot glowing(SCSIG) PWM converter system for 120[kW] 3[kA]. The system include 3-phase AC-DC rectifier diode converter of input voltage AC 460[V] and 60[Hz], DC-AC single phase full bridge PWM inverter of high frequency, AC-DC single-phase full wave rectifier using center-tapped of transformer for low voltage 50[V] and large current 3,000[A], carbon resistor load 0.2 [$m{\Omega}$]. PWM switching frequency for IGBT inverter control set 15KHz. The suggested researching contents are designed data sheets of power converter system, PSIM simulation, operating characteristics and analysis results of developed SCSIG system.

Mitigation of Voltage Sag and Swell Using Direct Converters with Minimum Switch Count

  • A new simplified topology for a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) based on direct converter with a reduced number of switches is presented. The direct converter is fabricated using only three bi-directional controlled switches. The direct converter is connected between the grid and center-tapped series transformer. The center-tapped series transformer is used to inject the compensating voltage synthesized by the direct converter. The DVR can properly compensate for long-duration, balanced, and unbalanced voltage sag and swell by taking power from the grid. The switches are driven by ordinary pulse width modulation signals. Simulation and hardware results validate the idea that the proposed topology can mitigate sag of 50% and swell of unlimited quantity.
