  • In a micro-scale contact, surface forces such as capillary force and van der Waals Interaction significantly Influence the contact between asperities of rough surfaces. Little is, however, known about the variation of these surface forces as a function of chemical property of the surface (hydrophilicity), relative humidity and deformation of asperities In the real area of contact. A better understanding of these surface forces is of great necessity in order to find an optimal solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro surfaces. We proposed an effective method to analyze capillary and van der Waals forces In nano-scale contact. In this method, Winklerian foundation model was employed to analyze the contact of rough surfaces that were obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) height Images. Self-mated contact of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings was analyzed, as an example, by the proposed model. It was shown that the capillary force was significantly influenced by relative humidify and wet angle of the DLC surface. The deformation of asperities to a critical magnitude by external loading led to a considerable increase of both capillary and van der Waals forces.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of head and neck(HN) position in the transverse plane on the static production of elbow extension force in the involved(paretic) upper extremity of patients with hemiparesis. On this study, thirty patients who had experienced a cerebrovascular accident were matched with neurologically intact subjects. Force of static elbow extension was tested with a hand-held dynamometer, twice with the HN rotated toward the paretic side and twice with the HN rotated toward the non-paretic side. Elbow extension force differed significantly with the HN in the two position in patients with hemiparesis but not in normal persons(${\alpha}$=0.05). Results of this study support the conclusion that HN position in the transverse plane influences the production of static elbow extension force on the paretic side in patients with hemiparesis.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in grip force and angular kinematic variables between elite (handicap${\leq}2$) and novice golfers. Three-dimensional motion analysis system with synchronized grip force measurement system was used. The participants consisted of two groups based on their playing ability: 10 elite golfers and 10 novice golfers. Each subject performed 5 putting strokes at the distance of 1, 3, and 5m with randomly selected order. During entire putting phase, elite group showed relatively constant grip force but novice group showed continuously increasing grip force pattern. There existed a clear difference in the trajectory of shoulder line between two groups. As for novice group the rotational center did not converge into one point, for elite group the rotational center converged into precise single point. And there was a clear difference pattern in anterior-posterior directional movement at shoulder between two groups. These difference might be helpful for improving consistent putting skills.

  • In order to achieve a desirable tooth movement, it is of great importance to control the M/F ratio and to know the location of the center of resistance. The purpose of this study was to locate the center of resistance and the axis of rotation, and to estimate the stress distribution in the periodontal ligament with experimental model. After preparing a model of an upper canine with a simulated periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, the force and moment were applied. The tooth movement was traced using measuring device with LVDTs(Linear variable differential transformers) that can measure three dimensional tooth movement in real time. The results were as follows. 1. The location of center of resistance by transverse force was $29\%$ of root length measured from alveolar crest to apex regardless of force magnitude. The position of the center of resistance is more coronal than that of two-dimensional model($42\%$). 2. The center of resistance and the axis of rotation coincide when couple moment was applied. 3. As the magnitude of moment increases, tooth tends to extrude irrespective of the direction of the moment. 4. The relationship between location of force and axis of rotation (a x b = $49.6\;mm^2$) was obtained. A tooth movement can be predicted through this formula. 5. The centers of rotation by transverse force were plotted linearly.

  • Due to the development of the CNC machine tool and CAM software, sculptured surface machining can be broadly used in die and mold industries and ball end milling process is often used for the sculptured surface machining. It is found out how feedrate affects the precision of the machining and also tried to study the most suitable feedrate in specific cutting condition. Two eddy current sensors were used far measuring tool deflections of X, Y axis, dynamometer for cutting force and roundness tester for roundness. It was found that the tool deflection is getting better as tool path is going to further from the center of convex surface. The reason is that the cutting force is increased as the tool approaches to the center. Examining the roundness, cutting force and tool deflection characteristics, it was found that the most suitable feedrate is 90mm/min in convex surface and 120mm/min in concave surface.

  • During static walking of a quadruped walking robot, stability of the robot depends on whether the projection of the mass center is located within the supporting area that is varying with leg motion and formed by standing legs. In this paper, force margin instead of the mass center was used to determine stability and body-tilting method was used to enhance it. On-line control of body tilting was realized with simple reaction feedback based on force margin of the static walking model of the robot instead of complicated calculation. Model reference on-line control where the model searches stable pose for predefined force margin also gave good walking performance.

  • For a given brushless DC linear motor, we suggest the numerical prediction methods to analyze it's thrust characteristics. First, we calculate the magnetic flux density by the finite element method, and we then compute the maximum thrust with three computational methods - a Lorentz equation, a Maxwell stress method and a virtual work method. To confirm the accuracy of the computational methods, we measure the thrust of the linear motor made by our laboratory with a force-torque sensor. Also, we calculate the thrust by the measured back electromotive force. To choose the appropriate method for a specified application, we compare the maximum thrusts of the computational method and the calculation by the back electromotive force with the measured one. We conclude that the Maxwell stress method is turned out the best because it has the most accurate results among three computational methods and it is more convenient than the calculation method by the back electromotive force.

  • In order to regulate the cutting force at a desired level during peripheral end milling processes, a feedrate override Adaptive Control Constant system was developed. This paper presents an explicit pole-assignment PI-control law through spindle motor current monitoring and its application to cutting force regulation for feedrate optimization. An experimental set-up is constructed for the commercial CNC machining center without any major changes of the structure. A data transfer system is constructed with standard interface between an IBM compatible PC and a CNC of the machining center. Experimental results show the validity of the system.

  • This study deals with the proper conditions of the trail rolling method (TRM) for the prevention of the buckling welding distortion at the AA5083 GMA butt weldment. For it, the effect of the working conditions of TRM including the rolling depth and the rolling distance between the welding torch and the roller on the longitudinal welding shrinkage force of the weldment was evaluated by using 3 dimensional thermo-mechanical FE analyses. The longitudinal welding shrinkage force inducing the buckling welding distortion at the GMA butt weldment was mitigated with an increase in the rolling depth and the rolling distance between the welding torch and the roller. Based on the results, the proper conditions of trail rolling method were established to reduce the longitudinal welding shrinkage force of the GMA butt weldment to below the critical value corresponding to the bucking distortion.

  • The force and moment simulation of a steady-state rolling tire taking the effect of tread pattern into account is described using a steady-state transport method with ABAQUS. Tread meshes can not fully consider a tread pattern because detailed tread meshes are not allowed in the steady-state transport method. Therefore, the tread elements are modeled to have orthotropic property instead of isotropic property. The force and moment simulation has been carried out for the cases of both isotropic and orthotropic properties of tread elements. Both cases of simulation results are then compared with the experimental results. It is verified that the orthotropic case is in a better agreement with the experimental result than the isotropic case. Angle effects of tread pattern have been studied by changing the orientation angle of orthotropic property of tread. It is shown that the groove angle in the tread shoulder region has a more effect on force and moment of a tire than that in the tread center region.
