The author studied the vertical height of tooth crown and the amounts of alveolar bone resorption with age. All 84 subjects(44 male, 40female) who visited Dental hospital of Wonkwang University with no history of sever periodontal disease and no experience of periodontal surgery. 84 subject were divided into 3 groups by age, that is, group I(28-32yrs), group II(38-42yrs), and group III(48-52yrs). Informal radiogram with bite wing film(horizontal angulation : $0^{\circ}$, vertical angulation : $+5^{\circ}~+10^{\circ}$) were taken on premolar and molar area. The distances from cusp tip to cementoenamel junction (vertical height of tooth crown) and from cementoenamel junction alveolar crest(amount of alveolar bone resorption) were measured, and then recorded data from 946 teeth were statistically analysed. This study was undertaken to obtain the data for age estimation by the changes of tooth crown height and alveolar bone resorption in the point of forensic odontology. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The average crown height of mandibular right 1st. molar was 7.1mm in group I, 6.7mm in group II, and 6.6mm group III, and the average amount of alveolar bone resorption on mandibular right 1st. molar were 1.8mm in group I, 2.5mm in group II, and 3.0mm in group III. Ratio of tooth crown height to amount of alveolar bone resorption was 4.0:1 in groupI, 2.7:1 in group II, and 2.2:1 in group III, the ratio was decreased with age. 2. In comparison with upper teeth and lower teeth in ipsilateral side, the average value of tooth crown height and amount of alveolar bone resorption were slightly higher in upper arch than those in lower arch, but there was not a statistically significant difference. 3. The ratio of height of tooth crown to amount of alveolar bone resorption was decreased with age, and which depended mainly upon the change of amount of alveolar bone resorption rather than the change of tooth crown height.
The delivery of optimal orthodontic treatment is greatly influenced by a clinician's ability to predict and control tooth movement achieved by applying known force systems to the dentition. It is important to determine the location of the center of resistance of a tooth or group of teeth to better understand the nature of their displacement characteristics under the various force levels. The purpose of this study was to define the location of the centers of resistance of various units of the upper anterior segment for lingually directed 100gm and 200gm force in a dry human skull. The units investigated were composed of four incisors and six anterior teeth. In addition, the effect of change in force magnitude on the location of the center of resistance of these units was investigated. The laser reflection technique was used to measure the initial displacements of the consolidated teeth under loading. The results were as follows: 1. The instantaneous center of resistance for the four anterior teeth was located vertically between level 4 and level 5-that is, at $37.4\%$ apical to the cementoenamel junction level. 2. The instantaneous center of resistance for the six anterior teeth was located vertically just beneath level 5-that is, at $50.3\%$ apical to the cementoenamel junction level. 3. Increasing force levels had little effect on the location of the center of resistance of a given unit. 4. The location of the instantaneous center of resistance shifted apically as the number of dental units consolidated increased.

Purpose: Preoperative identification of the intraosseous posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is critical when planning sinus surgery. This study was conducted to determine the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the PSAA, as well as to identify factors influencing the detection of the PSAA on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: In total, 254 CBCT scans of maxillary sinuses, acquired with 2 different scanners, were examined to identify the PSAA. The distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the PSAA was recorded at each maxillary posterior tooth position. Binomial logistic regression and multiple linear regression were employed to evaluate the effects of scanner type, CBCT parameters, sex, and age on PSAA detection and CEJ-PSAA distance, respectively. P-values less than 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The mean CEJ-PSAA distances at the second molar, first molar, second premolar, and first premolar positions were 17.0±4.0 mm, 21.8±4.1 mm, 19.5±4.7 mm, and 19.9±4.9 mm for scanner 1, respectively, and 17.3±3.5 mm, 16.9±4.3 mm, 18.5±4.1 mm, and 18.4±4.3 mm for scanner 2. No independent variable significantly influenced PSAA detection. However, tooth position (b=-0.67, P<0.05) and scanner type (b=-1.3, P<0.05) were significant predictors of CEJ-PSAA distance. Conclusion: CBCT-based estimates of CEJ-PSAA distance were comparable to those obtained in previous studies involving cadavers, CT, and CBCT. The type of CBCT scanner may slightly influence this measurement. No independent variable significantly impacted PSAA detection.
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of tooth structure crazing when pinhole were drilled in dentin at various distances from the dentionenamel junction, and when pins were inserted by hand wrench and Auto-klutch handpiece. Sixty freshly extracted teeth were embedded in blocks of cold-curing acrylic resin to a level 1mm apical to the cementoenamel junction, the crown of the teeth were removed to a level 1.5mm coronal to the cementoenamel junction. After being sectioned, the cut surface of the teeth were smoothed, and they were divided into 4 groups. Group I : 4 pinholes were drilled with self-threading Minim spiral drill and pins were inserted with hand wrench in fifteen teeth. Group II : 4 pinholes were drilled with self-threading Minim spiral drill and pins were inserted with Auto-klutch handpiece in fifteen teeth. Group III : 4 pinholes were drilled with self-threading Regular spiral drill and pins were inserted with hand wrench in fifteen teeth. Group IV : 4 pinholes were drilled with self-threading Regular spiral drill and pins were inserted with Auto-klutch handpiece in fifteen teeth. The cut surface were then examined microscopically for the presence or absence of craze line. The results were as follows: 1. The self-threading Minim pin groups (Group I & II) produced less craze lines than did the self-threading Regular pin groups (Group III & IV). 2. In the self-threading Minim pin groups, there was more craze lines with hand wrench (Group I) than with Auto-klutch handpiece (Group 11). 3. In the self-threading Regular pin groups, there was more craze lines with hand wrench (Group III) than with Auto-klutch handpiece (Group IV). 4. Placement of the pinhole at 0.0mm from the dentionenamel junction produced more craze lines than placed at 0.5mm, 1.0mm (p<0.05), however there was no statistically significant between the 0.5mm and 1.0mm distance.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate relationship of probing attachment levels, radiographic measurements and surgical measurements according to gingival inflammatory condition. Patients with incipient to moderate periodontitis were selected. Upper and lower premolar and molar teeth excluding third molars were measured. At first visit, gingival index and bleeding on probing were taken, and subjects were grouped into 4 categories as follows : Experimental group I : gingival index 1 and no bleeding on probing. Experimental group II : gingival index 2 and no bleeding on probing absent. Experimental group III : gingival index 1 and bleeding on probing present. Experimental group IV : gingival index 2 and bleeding on probing present. Probing attachment levels were measured with manual probe on mesial and distal surfaces from cementoenamel junctions to terminal ends of probe. Radiographic measurements were made to assess bone loss by measuring the distance from cementoenamel junction to the alveolar crest. After thorough scating, a flap was raised exposing the alveolar bone and surgical measurements were made from cementoenamel junction to alveolar bone. The results were as follows: 1. Differences between probing attachment level and radiographic measurements showed $1.01{\pm}0.73mm$ for experimental group I, $0.98{\pm}0.48mm$ for experimental group II, $0.59{\pm}0.66mm$ for experimental group III, $0.98{\pm}0.38mm$ for experimental group IV and with no significant difference between groups. 2. Differences between probing attachment level and surgical measurements showed $1.36{\pm}0.80mm$ for experimental group I, $1.47{\pm}0.54mm$ for experimental group II, $1.06{\pm}0.39mm$ for experimental group III, $1.41{\pm}0.40mm$ for experimental group IV and with no significant difference between groups. 3. Differences between surgical and radiographic measurements showed $0.36{\pm}0.48mm$ for experimental group I, $0.51{\pm}0.54mm$ for experimental group II, $0.57{\pm}0.72mm$ for experimental group III, $0.41{\pm}0.49mm$ for experimental group IV and with significant difference between experimental group I and experimental group II, III, IV(P<0.05).
A mucogingival grafting procedure has been developed to cover denuded root surface. The subepithelial connective tissue graft technique is very predictable and allows for a good esthetic results and minimum patient discomfort on the palate. However, in areas where there is a lack of vestibular depth and keratinized attached tissue, the presence of frena or heavy muscle attachment, covering the connective tissue graft with a mucosal flap is very difficult. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an alternative technique of root coverage using the free connective tissue graft. The results were as follows: 1. Probing depths didn't seem to vary significantly from the preoperative to postoperative period. 2. The amount of keratinized tissue showed an increase of $5.9{\pm}0.97mm$ from the preoperative level. 3. Total clinical exposed root coverage increase 72.2% compare with preoperative level. 4. The shrinkage from gingival margin is $4.2{\pm}1.15mm$ and the mean shrinkage rate is 40.1%. 5. The depth of the vestibule increased with the average distance from cementoenamel junction to mucogingival junction being $7.4{\pm}1.65mm$.
The purpose of this research, which was executed with 200 patients whose chief complaint was the extraction of the mandibular third molar, was to examine the effect that eruption state of the mandibular third molar has on the growth of pericoronitis. The conclusion about distribution of left and right mandibular third molar, angulation, impaction degree, anterior border of mandibular ramus and the interval from mandibular second molar to mandibular third molar was drawn by chi-square test. 1. There was correlation between pericoronitis and position of the mandibular third molar according to age. 2. In angulation of mandibular third molar, mandibular third molar most likely to be afflicted with pericoronitis is mesioangular. 3. The impaction degree between mandibular third molar and the growth of pericoronitis was given in the order of Level a, Level c and Level b. 4. In the anterior border of mandibular ramus with mandibular third molar, pericoronitis was easily generated in the order of Class II, Class I and Class III. 5. The shorter the interval from distal cementoenamel junction of mandibular second molar to mesial cementoenamel junction of third molar became, the more easily pericoronitis was generated.
This study was concerned with comparing the measured values of labial alveolar bone through the lateral cephalometric radiography and mandibular incisor cross-sectional tomogram between two groups, one group of mandibular prognathism patients who needed an orthognathic surgery as an experimental group and the other group who had normal molar relationships as a control group. The purpose of the study was to find out the predisposing factor of bone resorption and gingival recession before orthodontic treatment. The results were as follows: 1. The cross-sectional area of labial alveolar bony plate in mandibular prognathism was significantly smaller than that of control group. 2. In mandibular prognathism, the distance between cementoenamel junction and alveolar crest was significantly greater than control group. 3. There were negative correlations between area of labial alveolar bony plate and distance from cementoenamel junction to alveolar crest, and positive correlations between area of labial alveolar bony plate and distance from alveolar crest to root apex. 4. In mandibular prognathism, there were positive correlations between IMPA and thickness of symphysis, and negative correlations between IMPA and the alveolar bony height. The results of the present study suggest the mandibular prognathism patients are prone to the gingival recession due to the small amount of labial alveolar bone around lower incisors.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution aspect of unrestored and restored combined shape (wedge shape occulusally and saucer shape gingivally) class V cavity, which found frequently in clinical cases. A maxillary second permolar restored with a combined shape class V composite restorations were modeled using the three dimensional finite element method. Static occlusal load of 170 N was applied on lingual incline of buccal cusp at the angle of $45^{\circ}$ with the longitudinal axis of the tooth. And three dimensional finite element analysis was taken by ANSYS (Version 6.0, Swanson Analysis System Co., Houston, U.S.A) program which represent the stress distribution on unrestored and restored cavity wall and margin. The conclusions were as follows. 1. Compared to the unrestored cavity, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced and in restored cavity. 2. Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased in restored cavity in comparison with the unrestored cavity. 3. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced more than in the flowable restoration. 4. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased more than in the flowable restoration.
Purpose: Exact knowledge of the location and dimension of the pulp chamber help to maintain the pulp healthy during operative procedure and also reduces the risk of perforation of pulp chamber during root canal treatment. This in-vivo study was carried out to measure critical morphology of pulp chamber of mandibular molar using intra-oral periapical radiograph. Materials and Methods: Mandibular molar teeth of 56 patients were evaluated. The mandibular molar teeth whose pulp chamber was not violated by caries, restoration, fracture crown and those having closed apex were included in the study. The intraoral periapical radiographs were taken with paralleling angle technique using radio-opaque grid with 1 mm space. This grid was placed directly on the film. Results: In 94% of the mandibular first molars specimens the pulp chamber ceiling was at the level of the cemento-enamel junction. The measurements showing the lowest percentage variance were buccal cusp to furcation (approximately 11%) and buccal cusp to pulp chamber ceiling (approximately 15%). The distance from the cusp tip to pulp chamber ceiling height was approximately 6.0 mm, the distance from the pulpal floor to the furcation was approximately 3.0 mm, and the average height of a pulp chamber was 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Conclusion: The exact knowledge of distances of pulp chamber from various anatomical landmarks helps in proper assessment of root canals and ultimately avoids the failure of root canal treatment.
