  • As global warming becomes serious, research is continuously being conducted to reduce CO2 emissions. Among building materials, the carbon emission of cement is so high that it accounts for 6.8% of the carbon emission of the entire industry. Studies replacement of cement with blast furnace slag and fly ash are steadily increasing. In addition, efforts are being made to reduce air pollution due to increased damage caused by increased concentrations of harmful substances such as fine dust and heavy metals in the air. There is an increasing number of studies that enable adsorption by mixing adsorbents into building materials. This study reviewed the strength properties to make an adsorbable non-cement finishing material by mixing tourmaline, an adsorbent, based on the non-cement composite, and confirmed that the strength decreases as the replacement ratio increases.

  • Recently, a lot of nano-scale material technology development and research have been conducted in construction fields to improve the compressive strength and durability of cement-based Composites. There are some studies that have confirmed the properties and application effects of cement-based complex using each nanomaterial, but development and research using both materials are relatively limited. This study sought to confirm the effect of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and nanosilica, which are representative construction nanomaterials, on the compressive strength, voids, and microstructure formation of cement. The purpose was to produce a cement composite by changing the mixing rate of the two nanomaterials, and to find the optimal mixing amount considering its mechanical and rheological properties.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of inorganic pigments on the physical properties of cement mortar. For this purpose, the compressive strength and absorption test were carried out on cement mortar imxed with inorganic pigments by changing the proportion of cement mortar, water-cement ratio, and ratio of pigment. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: the compressive strength of colored mortar rapidely increased in red and yellow mortar, as the mix ratio of pigment increased. In case of green and black mortar, however, the compressive strength decresed as the mix ratio incresed. In case of red and yellow mortar, the absorption of colored mortar increased as the mixing ratio increased, if the mean particle diameter of the pigment is small. In case of green and black mortar, the absorption ratio decreased as the mix ratio increased. After investigating the overall physical properties of colored mortar, it was confirmed that the proper mix ratio of pigment securing the properties of colored mortar was below 6% of the weight of the cement to be used.

  • Epoxy-coated re-bar was partly used to the structures and put to practical use, but were not economical and appeared to have defects such as the diminishing of long term bond strength between concrete. The study of polymer cement slurry coated re-bar was started in order to complement the defect of epoxy coated re-bar, and ever since the basic properties appeared to be excellent. But, study of bond properties embedded in concrete specimens was insufficient until now. This study attempts to examine the possibility of improving the bond strength of polymer cement slurry coated re-bar between concrete specimens in accordance with ACI Code and KS Code through pull-out test of 150mm$\times$150mm$\times$150mm substrates with polymer cement slurry coated re-bar having polymer cement ratios of 50%, 75% and 100%, coating thickness 250${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 450 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and with curing ages of 3, 7 and 28 days. High strength concrete was designed having a compressive strength of 500kgf/cm2 as specified. Practical bond length ranges of 55 and 85mm were applied to each of specimen. The bond strength of polymer cement slurry coated re-bar using St/BA-1 and St/BA-2 was compared to that of plain re-bar. The results of this study showed that the bond strength of 55mm bond length was much higher than that of 85mm bond length.

  • Cyclic triaxial and resonant column tests were conducted to understand the beneficial effects of various grouted sands on liquefaction resistance and dynamic properties. The test procedures were performed on a variety of grouted sands, such as silicate-grouted sand, silicate-cement grouted sand and cement-grouted sand. For each type of grout, sand specimen was mixed with a 3.5% and 5% grout by volume. The specimens were tested at a curing age of 3, 7, 28 and 91 days, and the results of the cyclic stress ratio, the maximum shear modulus and the damping ratio were obtained during the testing program. The influence of important parameters, including the type of grout, grout content, shear strain, confining pressure, and curing age, were investigated. Results indicated that sodium silicate grout does not improve the liquefaction resistance and shear modulus; however, silicate-cement and cement grout remarkably increased the liquefaction resistance and shear modulus. Shear modulus decreased and damping ratio increased with an increase in the amplitude of shear strain. The effect of confining pressure on clean sand and sodium silicate grouted sand was found to be insignificant. Furthermore, a nonlinear regression analysis was used to prove the agreement of the shear modulus-shear strain relation presented by the hyperbolic law for different grouted sands, and the coefficients of determination, $R^2$, were nearly greater than 0.984.

  • For the purpose of reducing the amount of limestone, which is used as a desulfurization agent to absorbing $SO_X$ gas in thermal power plants, and to recycle limestone sludge generated from a steel mill, limestone sludge was utilized as a desulfurization agent. In this study, cement, made of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum obtained in a desulfurization process using limestone sludge, was manufactured then, experiments were conducted to identify the physical properties of the paste and mortar using the cement. The results of the crystal phase and microstructure analyses showed that the hydration product of the manufactured cement was similar to that of ordinary Portland cement. No significant decline of workability or compressive strength was observed for any of the specimens. From the results of the experiment, it was determined that FGD gypsum manufactured from limestone sludge did not influence the physical properties of the cement also, quality change did not occur with the use of limestone sludge in the flue gas desulfurization process.

  • Advancements in bio-ceramic technology has revolutionised endodontic material science by enhancing the treatment outcome for patients. This class of dental materials conciliates excellent biocompatibility with high osseoconductivity that render them ideal for endodontic care. Few recently introduced bio-ceramic materials have shown considerable clinical success over their early generations in terms of good handling characteristics. Calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement, Endosequence sealer, and root repair materials, Biodentine and BioAggregate are the new classes of bio-ceramic materials. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding properties and applications of CEM cement in endodontics. A review of the existing literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for CEM cement from January 2006 to December 2013. CEM cement has a different chemical composition from that of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) but has similar clinical applications. It combines the biocompatibility of MTA with more efficient characteristics, such as significantly shorter setting time, good handling characteristics, no staining of tooth and effective seal against bacterial leakage.

  • This study examined the effects of particle size on characteristics of cement by controlling the particle size of commercial cement. Through a size adjustment, the cement has increasing more of particles that are less than $10{\mu}m$ in size so the initial reaction time has been shortened as a result of improvement in the early hydration reaction. Additionally, it showed a great characteristics of strength from the early age and the initial hydration heat has been increased as well. In the upper and middle parts cements, the initial hydration reaction rate contribution is high with the $10{\mu}m$ compared to original cement. So the initial hydration reaction rate is improved and as a result, it also showed relatively high hydration heat as well. Additionally, adiabatic temperature also showed an increase rate in the results.

  • In Korea, more than 30,000 tons of waste Styrofoam are produced every year. Styrofoam is spent more than 500 years decomposing during the reclamation process, so it needs to be recycled. The recycling rate of waste styrofoam continues to be the third highest in the world, but it is lower than that of Germany and Japan. Therefore, measures are needed to increase the recycling rate of waste Styropol. Another problem is that cement is mainly used in existing lightweight foam concrete. However, large amounts of CO2 from cement-producing processes cause environmental pollution. Currently, Korea is increasing its greenhouse gas reduction targets to cope with energy depletion and climate change, and accelerating efforts to identify and implement reduction measures for each sector. In 2013 alone, about 600 million tons of carbon dioxide was generated in the cement industry. Therefore, this study replaces CO2 generation cement with furnace slag fine powder, uses crude steel cement for initial strength development of bubble concrete, and manufactures hardening materials to study its properties using waste styrofoam. As a result of the experiment, the hardening agent replaced by micro powder of furnace slag was less intense and more prone to absorption than cement using ordinary cement. Further experiments on the segmentation and strength replenishment of furnace slag are believed to contribute to the manufacture of environmentally friendly lightweight foam concrete.
