  • The carbonation of concrete is one of the major factors that cause durability problems in concrete structures. The rate of carbonation depends largely upon the diffusivity of carbon dioxide in concrete. The purpose of this study is to identify the diffusion coefficients of carbon dioxide for various concrete mixtures. To this end, several series of tests have been planned and conducted. The test results indicate that the diffusion coefficient increases with the increase of water-cement ratio. The diffusion coefficient decreases with the increase of relative humidity at the same water-cement ratio. The diffusion of carbon dioxide reached the steady state within about five hours after exposure. The content of aggregates also influences the diffusivity of carbon dioxide in concrete. It was found that the diffusion coefficient of cement paste is larger then that of concrete or mortar. The quantitative values of diffusivity of carbon dioxide in this study will allow more realistic assessment of carbonation depth in concrete structures.

  • This study investigated the use of different amounts of BFS and POFA. In all mixture systems, 60% cement was replaced with POFA and BFS as a substitute for Ordinary Portland Cement. The results show that with the addition of POFA and BFS, although the early compressive strength will be reduced, the strength will be significantly improved at 28 days. In the ternary system, the 28-day strength is negatively correlated with increasing POFA content.

  • We tested the limestone sludge produced in Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. as a filler powder for the effective use of portland cement. Hydration process was investigated by measuring the hydration rate, the amounts of non-evaporable water and compressive strength of cement-limestone sludge paste prepared by mixing limes-tone sludge with cement. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows: 1. There is no significant difference between the cases of adding up to 10% limestone sludge and those of unmixed cement system. However the reaction rate increases in the 5% limestone sludge system(due to the effects of fine). 2. The compressive strength increases proportionally with increasing the measured amount of non-evaporable water, Adding 5% limestone sludge also increases the strength a little higher, and the compressive strength and calcium silicate hydrates. In the case of the mixed limestone sludge, $2\theta$=$11.7^{\circ}$ peak appears in the samples of 28 days hydration. This peak indicted the presence of calcium carboaluminate hydrate. Although limestone sludge is generally regarded as a inert materials, some kinds of cement can produce a calcium carboaluminate by reacting with aluminate in cement pastes.

  • This paper is dealing with the fundamental properties of planting concrete, replacing the existing cover concrete on the roof of a building. This study is to find out the physical characteristics of the planting concrete and rearing characteristics of the grass throughout the modeling experimental materials. As the results of the experiment, the physical properties of planting concrete show the following results; when the paste to aggregate ratio is 0.2~ 0.4, voids volume : 30~17%, unit weight: 1,710~2,010kg/m3, compressive strength : 45~145kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, its pH is more than 11, but is reduced to the proper degree for planting after being neutralized. Kentucky bluegrass covered with planting concrete is grown well. The planting concrete used with blast furnace slag cement shows a better properties at the height, the width and the covering rate by 1.1cm, 0.5mm and 7%, respectively, than those used with ordinary portland cement. Also, the less the paste to aggregate ratio is, the better the plant grows. The orders of the effects of temperature control are as follows; the system of planting concrete with grass>the system of planting concrete without grass>the system of mixed soil>the existed roof system. In case, the planting concrete is placed to the roofs of buildings instead of normal concrete slab, and a number of favorable effect can be expected such as the improvement os environmental factors, the reduction of construction cost, the saving of energy and the reduction of environment load. The future research on the change of a variety of the aggregate conditions and the application of the practical structures should be made, and also the research of the endurance also be performed.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data on the optimum method for interfacial separation for an effective recycle of concrete waste by using the thermal properties of concrete. Therefore, this study is proceeded by dividing the interface of concrete into cement paste and fine aggregates or mortar and coarse aggregate, considering the aspect of recycled cement and aggregate as the recycling use of concrete waste. As results of the experiment, in case of recycle cement, the interfacial separation is easily appeared, but it is shown that the mixed amount of powder included in fine aggregate doesn't greatly decrease. But, in case of recycle coarse aggregate, the effect of interfacial separation by preliminary heating is predominant. Especially, the bonding rate of mortar is the lowest when it is heated 5 times for 120 minutes at $300^{\circ}C$. Hence, it is considered that it will be an excellent effect of quality control when the results of this study is applied to a manufacturing system of recycle coarse aggregate which is about to put into practical use.

  • The volume change in concrete takes place with changes in temperature and water content immediately after concrete casting. In the early age stage, the thermal and drying shrinkages can cause cracks that are very crucial to the durability of concrete. It was reported that when the cement with lightly-burnt MgO powder was used, the shrinkage of concrete can be reduced. This study investigates fundamental properties of cement composites with lightly burnt MgO powder by performing various experiments. The stability test results verified that MgO powder in cement composites does not cause any abnormal expansion. Also, the hydrate product analysis results obtained from MgO cement paste showed that MgO powder reduces the shrinkage at the longterm ages. In addition, the cement composites containing the proper amount of MgO powder could improve compressive strength. Finally, the shrinkage reduction from using MgO powder can be optimized by increasing MgO replacement level and curing temperature.

  • Large-scaling recycling of demolished concrete will contribute not only to the solution of a growing waste disposal problem. it will also help to conserve natural resoures of sand and gravel and to secure future supply of reasonly priced aggregates for builiding and other construction purposes within large urban areas. because recycled aggregate particles consist of substaintial amount of relatively soft cement paste component, it is less resistant to mechanical actions. With this view in mind, to obtain a reference data for the development of recycling system and to a basic data the guideline of recycled aggregate concrete construction and mix design, this study deals with the comparative analysis of the workability and engineering properties of recycled aggregate concrete according to the factors, such as blending ratio of recycled aggregate with the natural aggregate, addition of flyash, water cement ration.

  • This paper aims to develop the diffused reflection material in order to reduce the solar absorption coefficient, and to compare the thermal properties with the different roof structure system; one is using the diffused reflection material applied the upper side of the rigid sheet waterproof system and the other is using the conventional up-side down waterproof system on the roof. For this purpose two experimental test boxes were made of same iso-panel wall and floor with different roof system. The experiment was carried out under these process; measure the surface temperature exposed solar radiation of the variation of the reflection materials(cement paste, silica, galvanized steel and titanium dioxide(TiO2)), measure and analyze the variation of the temperature distribution of the each roof system and indoor air in order to evaluate the thermal properties according to the different roof system. The result shows clearly that using the titanium dioxide(TiO2) might be more effective to reduce the solar insolation.

  • Concrete is a representative heterogeneous material and mechanical properties of concrete are influenced by various factors. Due to the fact that pores in concrete affect determining compressive strength of concrete, studies which deal with distribution and magnitudes of pores are very important. That way, studies using picture imaging have been emerged. Studies on mechanical performance evaluation of structural lightweight foamed concrete and FEM analysis based on picture image are inadequate because lightweight foamed concrete has been researched for only non-structural. Therefore, in this study, cement paste with foaming agent to evaluate mechanical performance is made, FEM analysis with picture image is conducted and young's modulus of experiment and analysis are compared. In this study, dosage of foaming agent is determined 7 level to check pore distribution and water-binder ratio is determined 20% to progress research about structural light weight foamed concrete. Weight of unit volume is minimum at 0.8% of foaming agent dosage. However, weight of unit volume is increased over 0.8% of foaming agent dosage because of interconnection with independent pores. For FEM analysis, cement paste is photographed to use image analyzer(HF-MA C01). Consequently, the fact that Young's Modulus of experiment and FEM analysis are same is drawn by using OOF(Object Oriented Finite elements).
