  • The tailings stocked at two tailing piles in Sangdong aea have raised collapse hazards and various environmental problems. A trial for effective utilization of tailings as fine aggregates for polymer concrete has been performed along with mineralogical and physical characterization of tailings. The tailings from the Sangdong mine, mainly composed of quartz, orthoclase, amphiboles and muscovite, are alkaline and tailings at the new tailing pile are generally finer in grain size than those at the old tailing pile. In case of using New Tailings as fine aggregates, cement mortar with equivalent amounts of tailings and sands shows the highest compressive strength. Cement mortars containing tailings show lower values of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength than those not-containing tailings. Mixture of polymers such as SBR and EVA in cement mortars raises strengths of cement mortars effectively, which shows potential possiblity to utilize the tailings in Sangdong area as fine aggregates for polymer concretes.

  • Compressive strength, sulfate deterioration factor(SDF) and length change of 5 types of mortars immersed in sodium sulfate solution were observed. As the results of tests, it was found that the sulfate resistance of blended cement mortars were superior to that of portland cement mortars. Pore volume with diameter larger than 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ of 5 types of pastes indicated that the micro-structures of blended cement pastes were denser, due to pozzolan reaction and latent hydraulic properties, than those of portland cement pastes. The XRD, ESEM, EDS and TG analyses demonstrated that the reactants such as ettringite and gypsum were significantly formed in portland cement pastes. Besides, compared with the $Ca(OH)_2$ content of ordinary portland cement pastes immersed in water and sodium sulfate solution, the $Ca(OH)_2$ contents of fly ash blended cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement paste were about 58% and 28% in water, and 55% and 20% in sodium sulfate solution, respectively.

  • Epoxy resin without any hardener can harden in the presence of hydroxide ions in cement mortars and concretes at ambient temperature. The purpose of present study is to examine the hardening properties of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars by curing conditions. The hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars using diglycidyl ether of A epoxy resin are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and subjected to initial moist/dry curing, initial steam(90℃) curing, initial steam/heat(80℃, 100℃) curing. As a result, degree of hardening of epoxy resin in initial moist/dry cured, initial steam cured and initial steam/heat(80℃) cured hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars is decreased with increasing polymer-cement ratio. However, it is markedly improved with additional dry-curing periods. On the other hand, regardless of the polymer-cement ratio and dry curing periods, degree of hardening of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars with initial steam/heat(100℃) cure is over 95%.

  • In this study the effects of specifics surface area of cement, addition amount of gypsum and substitution ratio of gypsum anhydrite ont he physical properties of cement mortars were investigated by measruements of setting time, flow, compressive strength and hydration heat evolution rate. The results showed that fluidity of mortars was increased by 40 wt.% of maximum flow change with the decreasing specific surface area of cement from 3,500$\textrm{cm}^2$/g to 3,300${\pm}$50$\textrm{cm}^2$/g and affected by the relationship between the cement and balancing between the chemical activityof cement and solubility of calcium sulfate are desirable to prevent the fluidity of concrete from decreasing by high temperature in summer season.

  • The purpose of this study is to design the basic mix proportions of antiwashout underwater polymer cement mortar as a repair material. The antiwashout underwater polymer cement mortars are prepared with various mix proportions using three type polymer dispersions without or with antifoamer. From the test results, the whole antiwashout underwater polymer cement mortars can be cast underwater without segregation like plain mortar. It is apparent that the flexural strength of antiwashout underwater SBR cement mortars with antifoamer at polymer- cement ratios of 5% and 10% is higher than that of plain mortar irregardless of a little low compressive strength.

  • The changes of physical properties of portland cement pastes and mortars were investigated by addition of sodium gluconate. Flow table experiment and viscosity measurement were took in order to find dispersing effect, and time-dependent changesof viscosity and rates of hydration heat evolution were carried out for the sake of finding retardation effect of hydration. And changes of physical properties of cement pastes and mortars were discussed by setting time, compressive strength and porosity.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of polymer glass transition temperature on mechanical properties of polymer latex-modified mortars in comparison with ordinary cement mortar. The Polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, 15 and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as air content, compressive, flexural and tensile strengths are tested. The test results indicate that the types of polymer dispersion and the polymer-cement ratio are very important factors to characterize the properties of polymer-modified mortars, and also the glass transition temperature of polymer dispersions has an important effect on the performance of polymer-modified mortars. The modifying effects of two kinds of polymer dispersion, St/BA-1 and SBR, are evaluated.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content on the durability characteristics of ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder are examined. As a result, the flexural and tensile strengths of the ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to increase with increasing polymer-cement ratio, and tend to decrease with increasing shrinkage-reducing agent content. However, the compressive strength of the ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content. And, water absorption and mass change of chemicals resistance of ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio, antifoamer content and shrinkage-reducing agent content on the air content, setting time and drying shrinkage of polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder are examined. As a result the air content of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio and antifoamer agent content. Regardless of the antifoamer content, the setting time of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to delayed with increasing polymer-cement ratio. Irrespective of the antifoamer content, the drying shrinkage of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content.
