  • The rheological properties of poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) blend solutions in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) were investigated in terms of temperature and blend composition. The solutions exhibited a very characteristic rheological behavior with variation of temperature. 8 wt% solution showed an increase of viscosity and a decrease of loss tangent as temperature was increased over the temperature range of 20 and $60^{\circ}C$. At $20^{\circ}C$ the physical properties of the solutions exhibited dependence on the blend composition. At 40 and $60^{\circ}C$, however, the effects of blend ratio on the physical properties notably diminished. The longer relaxation time at higher temperature indicated that the formation of physical structures resulting from intermolecular interactions was promoted with increasing temperature. The odd rheological responses were further elucidated by measuring of the physical properties of dilute solutions. The intrinsic viscosity of the solutions suggested that the coiled chain dimension was reduced with increasing temperature.

  • In order to study a reversible photoisomerization of disperse red l(DR 1) attached on natural polymers, cellulose acetate containing DR l(DR 1/CA adduct) was prepared, and the changes of UV/VIS spectra of its solution(benzene, DMAc). thick film, and LB film were investigated by alternate irradiation with two different wave length lights. DR 1/CA adduct was prepared through tosylation of partially hydrolyzed cellulose acetate followed by reaction with DR 1 at $100^{\circ}C$ in pyridine. From the UV/VIS spectra of DR 1/CA adduct dissolved in DMAc solvent including phosphoglyceride before and after irradiation at 360nm and 45Onm, we found out the changes of UV/VIS spectra were reversible. In addition, the change of UV/VIS spectra of this adduct solution was strongly depended on the sorts of solvents and temperature. As the temperature was increased, UV/VIS spectra of this adduct solution in DMF showed blue shift. These results provided this solution could be applied to a temperature sensor. In the thick film case, we also obtained similar results with solution case. LB monolayer and trilayer from DR 1/CA adduct was obtained by scattering the solution including phosphoglyceride on water surface at the surface pressure of 8mN/m. After irradiation on that LB monolayer and trilayer, the reversible photoisomerization was also detected. From these results we concluded DR 1/CA adduct was suitable for the application to data storage and optical switch, etc.

  • Alkaline hydrolysis to improve the hand of PET/acetate union fabric was studied in relation to skin saponification and retarding effect of salts on the alkaline hydrolysis of cellulose acetate fiber, accelerating effect of salts on the alkaline hydrolysis of PET fiber, and changes of total hand value(T.H.V) of PET/acetate union fabric treated with alkali/salt solution. It was found that the rate of saponification of acetate was delayed by the addition of salts such as LiCl, NaCl and CH$_{3}$COONa into NaOH solution below 10 minutes. The rate of shrinkage of acetate fabric treated with 5g/l NaOH solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 60 minutes showed 20 % but it was decreased 8% by. the addition of 120g/l Concentration of inorganic salts. We could know that the rate of alkaline hydrolysis of filament yarn treated with alkali solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 60 minutes was delayed about 3 % using 2,000T/M of hard twist yarn, especially acetate filament treated with alkali solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 10 minutes was delayed about 10%. T.H.V. of PET/acetate union fabric was increased from 2.77 to 3.04~3.18 by the addition of salts into alkali solution.

  • A study approached the development of a process for efficiently recycling discarded cigarette butts, reported as a major source of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments. Cigarette butts were sorted to extract filters, and cellulose acetate, the raw material of the filters, was extracted to a high degree of purity. The sorting of filters from cigarette butts was conducted through both wet and dry processes, each with optimized sorting conditions. Wet stirring sorting considered factors such as solid-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and stirring temperature. The highest efficiency of wet stirring sorting, at 46.21%, was observed with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:45, stirring speed of 200 rpm, and stirring temperature of 50℃. Dry wind power sorting took into account moisture content and residence time. The filter sorting efficiency reached its peak at 57.10% with a moisture content of 20% and a residence time of 5 minutes. There was no significant difference in the recovery rate of cellulose acetate between the two sorting processes. Dry wind power sorting was deemed a more advantageous process in terms of energy and environmental considerations within the scope of this study.

  • The permeation characteristics were investigated for pure carbon dioxide and methane through asymmetric cellulose acetate(CA) membrane, composite cellulose acetate membrane and asymmetric cellulose triacetate(CTA) membrane. In particular, the effect of operating pressure on the permeation performance was examined. And the permeation behavior for a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane ($CO_2/CH_4=57.6/42.4$) was also investigated and compared to the characteristics obtained from pure gases. The experiments were run at the range of partial pressure from 25 to 125 psig, and room temperature. The permeation behaviors of the CA composite and CTA membrane were similiar to those of the CA membrane. The permeation rates of pure carbon dioxide for CA, CA composite and CTA membrane were increased slightly with an increase in upstream partial pressure, while in the case of pure methane they were independent of upstream partial pressure. For a binary mixture of carbon dioxide and methane, abnormal permeation behaviors were observed due to the plasticization of carbon dioxide and the competition effect of each gas. The separation factor and permeation rate for CTA membrane were found to be higher than those for CA membrane, but the mechanical strength of CTA membrane was very poor. And the permeation rate for CA composite membrane was higher than that for CA membrane. Consequently, it can be said that the CA composite membrane is a strong candidate for the separation of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$.

  • Recently, Importance of studying based on biomass materials have increased due to the concern about plastic waste problems. Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a potential alternative to petroleum-based plastics because of its biodegradable property. Poly(ethylene-co-isosorbide terephthalate) (PEIT) is bio-based plastic, produced by isosorbide monomer. In this study, CAB/PEIT blends were prepared by solution blending to improve thermal stability of CAB. CAB and PEIT were dissolved in chloroform, and then precipitated in ethanol. To evaluate the compatibility of CAB/PEIT blends, the morphology and glass transition behaviors were analyzed by FE-SEM and DMA, respectively. TGA results revealed the improved thermal stabilities of the PEIT-rich and 50:50 compositions. No new or changed crystal structures were observed in the XRD result. Finally, CAB/PEIT solution blends showed good compatibility in overall compositions.

  • Background and Objectives: Although polyvinyl acetate ($Merocel^{(R)}$) has been widely used as a packing material after septoplasty, removable nasal packing can increase patient discomfort, local pain, and pressure. Furthermore, the removal of nasal packing has been described as the most uncomfortable and distressing feature associated with septoplasty. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of polyvinyl acetate with carboxymethyl cellulose sheet ($Rhinocel^{(R)}$) nasal packing on patient subjective symptoms, degree of bleeding, hemostasis, and wound healing following septoplasty. Subjects and Method: Forty patients with nasal septum deviation requiring septoplasty were included. Following surgery, one nasal cavity was packed with $Rhinocel^{(R)}$ and the other one with $Merocel^{(R)}$. Patient subjective symptoms while the packing was in situ, hemostatic properties, pain on removal, degree of bleeding on removal, duration of hemostasis after removal, postoperative wound healing, and the cost of the pack were evaluated. Results: Although the two types of packing materials were equally effective in controlling postoperative bleeding after septoplasty, $Rhinocel^{(R)}$ was significantly more comfortable while in situ and less painful on removal than $Merocel^{(R)}$, which was associated with significantly more bleeding on removal and so more time was needed to control hemorrhage. There was no significant difference in postoperative wound healing or pack cost. Conclusion: The use of $Rhinocel^{(R)}$ after septoplasty has less discomfort, greater patient satisfaction, and less bleeding on removal with no adverse reactions compared to $Merocel^{(R)}$ packing. Therefore, $Rhinocel^{(R)}$ may be a useful packing material after septoplasty.

  • Purpose: To analyze thermal effect on mechanical properties of domestic commercial polymer-based eyewear frames. Methods: In this study, materials of cellulose acetate, polyamide, epoxy, and polyetherimide were exposed to high or low temperature and were mounted on universal test machine (TO-100-IC) for tensile strength test. Elastic behavior, Young's modulus, maximum displacement, and fatigue were tested with various temperature ($-25^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$). Results: As a result, at room temperature, displacements of materials were changed with increasing impact load. At low temperature ($-25^{\circ}C$), maximum displacements of all specimens were decreased but young's modulus were increased. However, at high temperature, maximum displacements of all specimens were increased but young's modulus were decreased. Conclusions: Degree of displacements due to fatigue behavior was increased following direction of PEI, epoxy, polyamide, acetate. We concluded that commercial polymers used in eyewear frames physical properties were changed differently to exposed temperature.

  • This paper has studied the hydrophilizing effect of support on the performance of pressure retarded osmosis (PRO). The hydrophilicity of polyester support has been controlled with cellulose solutions. In order to investigate the effect of hydrophilizing of support, the performance test has been conducted with membrane which compose of active layer and support in absence of support layer. The active layer has been made by casting of cellulose tri-acetate (CTA) 1,4-dioxane solution (13 wt%) and combined with the hydrophilized support. The results show that water fluxes of PRO membranes with hydrophobic or hydrophilized support were measured $0.8L/m^2hr$ and $1.2L/m^2hr$ under $5kgf/cm^2$ pressure, respectively. However, water flux increase did not accord with hydrophilicity of supports treated by cellulose solutions. It is because the porosity and pore size of supports decrease as the cellulose concentration increases. This result confirms that both the hydrophilization of support and the maintenance of membrane porosity are important to enhance the performance of PRO membrane.
