An operation sequence of parts is one of the most important production factors in the design of cellular manufacturing systems. Many similarity coefficient method (SCM) based approaches have been proposed to solve cell formation problems in the literature. However, most of them do not consider the operation sequence factor. This study presents an operation sequence ratio (OSR) and modifies some existing similarity coefficients using the OSR to solver cell formation problems considering operation sequences. The computational results show that the OSR ratio is useful and robust in solving cell formation problems with operation sequences.
In this study, a machine grouping problem for the formation of manufacturing cells is considered. We constructed the problem as minimizing manufacturing leadtime consisting of parts' processing, moving, and waiting time. Specifically, the main objective of the defined problem is established as minimizing inter-cell traffic in order to minimize the part's moving time. In addition, to reduce the waiting time of parts, the load balance among cells is implicitly included as constraints. Since this problem is well known as NP-complete and cannot be solved in polynomial time, a genetic algorithm is implemented to obtain solutions. Also, a local optimization algorithm is applied in order to improve the solution by the genetic algorithm. Several experiments show that the suggested algorithms guarantee near optimal solutions in a few seconds.
A method for forming production cells in cellular manufacturing systems is presented. The basic approach is based on part-machine group formation by using relationship matrix calculated from the original part-machine matrix. The cases of exceptional elements and bottleneck machines are discussed. The proposed method can work with any starting form of part-machine matrix and provides the same solution regardless of the changes of starting form of part-machine matrix for any given problem.
This paper proposes a mathematical model for converting conveyor assembly line to cellular manufacturing in complex production environments. Complex production environments refer to the situations with multi-products, variant demand, different batch sizes and the worker abilities varying with work stations and products respectively. The model proposed in this paper aims to determine (1) how many cells should be formatted; (2) how many workers should be assigned in each cell; (3) and how many workers should be rested in shortened conveyor line when a conveyor assembly line should be converted, in order to optimize system performances which are defined as the total throughput time and total labor power. We refer the model to a new production system. Such model can be used as an evaluation tool in the cases of (i) when a company wants to change its production system (usually a belt conveyor line) to a new one (including cell manufacturing); (ii) when a company wants to evaluate the performance of its converted system. Simulation experiments based on the data collected from the previous documents are used to estimate the marginal impact that each factor change has had on the estimated performance improvement resulting from the conversion.
Manufacturing cell formation is one of the most important problems faced in designing cellular manufacturing systems. The purpose of this study is to design effective manufacturing cell systems by developing a method which forms machines/parts into optimal machine cells/part families. The 0-1 data matrix structure is used to form a basis for manufacturing cell formation. In this paper, we propose a CE method to reorder the 0-1 data matrix for manufacturing cell formation. The resulting solutions are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CE method.
One of the major drawbacks of the existing facility layout methods is that most of them were developed based on pre-defined cost functions, and therefore fail to cope with the dynamic aspects of modern manufacturing systems. Another drawback is that due to the poor representation capability of the block diagrams, they are not able to convey the sufficient information needed by facility designers. In this paper, a system for solving facility layout problem considering these matters in cellular manufacturing environment is proposed and implemented using GA approach with embedded simulation module and virtual reality technologies.
With the success of flexible manufacturing systems(FMSs), flexible assembly systems(FASs) have been developed to automatic factories further. As in a cellular FMS, a celluar FAS is considered as the most flexible and feasible assembly systems configuration. This paper presents a method for the integrated layout design in cellular FASs. Unlike the traditional paper, this paper deals with the formation of cells and the layout of cells for jobs with operation times on different machines. The procedure in this paper consists of two distinct phases. The first phase presents machine arrangement in a double rows flowline. cell formation not to allow intercellular movements, and integrated layout design in cellular FASs considering the characteristics of FAS, layout, and production factors This phase uses older optimal algorithm. The second phase proposes to balance the system with an objective of reducing the degree of workload deviation in the cells. Simulated annealing method is used to balance the system. This phase also shows the integrated layout design in cellular FASs with the cost less than total cost of the first phase.
In this paper, a fuzzy based machine-cell formation algorithm for cellular manufacturing is presented. The fuzzy lovic is employed to express the degree of appropriateness when alternative machnies are specified to process a part shape. For machine grouping, the similarity coefficient based approach is used. The algorithm produces efficient machine cells and part families which maximize the similarity values.
In a increasingly competitive marketplace, the manufacturing companies have no choice but looking for ways to improve productivity to sustain their competitiveness and survive in the industry. Recently cellular manufacturing has been under discussion as an option to be easily implemented without burdensome capital investment. The objective of cellular manufacturing is to realize many aspects of efficiencies associated with mass production in the less repetitive job-shop production systems. The very first step for cellular manufacturing is to group the sets of parts having similar processing requirements into part families, and the equipment needed to process a particular part family into machine cells. The underlying problem to determine the part and machine assignments to each manufacturing cell is called the cell formation. The purpose of this study is to develop a clustering algorithm based on the neural network approach which overcomes the drawbacks of ART1 algorithm for cell formation problems. In this paper, a generalized learning vector quantization(GLVQ) algorithm was devised in order to transform a 0/1 part-machine assignment matrix into the matrix with diagonal blocks in such a way to increase clustering performance. Furthermore, an assignment problem model and a rearrangement procedure has been embedded to increase efficiency. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using data sets adopted by prior studies on cell formation. The proposed algorithm dominates almost all the cell formation reported so far, based on the grouping index($\alpha$ = 0.2). Among 27 cell formation problems investigated, the result by the proposed algorithm was superior in 11, equal 15, and inferior only in 1.
The performance of Cellular Manufacturing (CM) systems has been rigorously investigated during the last two decades, but the extent of empirical research on CM is limited. A major objective of this study is to examine the relationship between critical success factors, employees' implementation attitudes and performance of CM systems. Two hypothesis were formulated &d Tested: (1) The impact of critical success factors on performance and to what extent does certain critical success factors correlate with performance\ulcorner (2) How does the relationship between critical success factors and performance differ by employees' implementation attitudes\ulcorner Results from the study provide partial support for relationship between critical success factors (infrastructure, organizational immersion, autonomous management) and performance. The results also show that differences in performance of organizations grouped by degree of employees' attitudes could be found.
