Entamoeba histolytica, which causes amoebic colitis and occasionally liver abscess in humans, is able to induce host cell death. However, signaling mechanisms of colon cell death induced by E. histolytica are not fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the signaling role of NOX in cell death of HT29 colonic epithelial cells induced by E. histolytica. Incubation of HT29 cells with amoebic trophozoites resulted in DNA fragmentation that is a hallmark of apoptotic cell death. In addition, E. histolytica generate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a contact-dependent manner. Inhibition of intracellular ROS level with treatment with DPI, an inhibitor of NADPH oxidases (NOXs), decreased Entamoebainduced ROS generation and cell death in HT29 cells. However, pan-caspase inhibitor did not affect E. histolytica-induced HT29 cell death. In HT29 cells, catalytic subunit NOX1 and regulatory subunit Rac1 for NOX1 activation were highly expressed. We next investigated whether NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1)-derived ROS is closely associated with HT29 cell death induced by E. histolytica. Suppression of Rac1 by siRNA significantly inhibited Entamoeba-induced cell death. Moreover, knockdown of NOX1 by siRNA, effectively inhibited E. histolytica-triggered DNA fragmentation in HT29 cells. These results suggest that NOX1-derived ROS is required for apoptotic cell death in HT29 colon epithelial cells induced by E. histolytica.
Background: The efficacy of ginseng, the representative product of Korea, and its chemical effects have been well investigated. The ginsenoside RG3 has been reported to exhibit apoptotic, anticancer, and antidepressant-like effects. Methods: In this report, the putative effect of RG3 on several cellular function including cell survival, differentiation, development and aging process were evaluated by monitoring each specific marker. Also, mitochondrial morphology and function were investigated in ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated normal human dermal fibroblast cells. Results: RG3 treatment increased the expression of extracellular matrix proteins, growth-associated immediate-early genes, and cell proliferation genes in UV-irradiated normal human dermal fibroblast cells. And, RG3 also resulted in enhanced expression of antioxidant proteins such as nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 and heme oxygenase-1. In addition, RG3 affects the morphology of UV-induced mitochondria and plays a role in protecting mitochondrial dysfunction. Conclusioin: RG3 restores mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and membrane potential via its antioxidant effects in skin cells damaged by UV irradiation, leading to an increase in proteins linked with the extracellular matrix, cell proliferation, and antioxidant activity.

Schemes to trap weakly absorbed light into the cell have played an important role in improving the efficiency of both amorphous and crystlline silicon solar cells. One class of scheme relies on randomizing the direction of light within the cell by use of Lambertian(diffuse)surfaces. A second class of scheme relies on the use fo well defined geometrical features to control the direction of light wihin the cell, Widly used geometrical features in crystalline silicon solar cells are the square based pyramids and V-shaped grooves formed in (100) orientated surfaces by intersecting(III) crystallographic planes exposed by anisotropic etching. 18.5% conversion efficiency of Buried Contact Solar Cell with pyramidally textured surface has been achieved. 18.5% efficiency of silicon solar cell is one the highest record in the world The efficieny of cell without textured surface was 16.6%, When adapting textured surface to the Cell, the efficiency has been improved over 12%.
Backgorund: WEHI-231 B cell line is a representative model for $IgM^+$ mature B cells. To understand the signaling differences between mature and immature B cells, we compared the responsiveness of WEHI-231 and Bal 17 B cell lines to BCR cross-linking. Methods: The extents of tyrosine phosphorylation, ligand-induced internalization, and activation-induced cell death upon BCR cross-linking were compared in two cell lines. Results: Despite a higher expression of BCR, cross-linking of BCR on WEHI-231 cell evoked a weaker level of tyrosine phosphorylation and BCR endocytosis than Bal 17 cells. Furthermore, the endocytosed BCR could not enter the lysosomal compartment and stayed as peripheral spots in WEHI-231 cells. Conclusion: WEHI-231 cell showed preferred BCR-mediated signaling pathways leading to a reduced capability of antigen presentation as well as the enhanced apoptosis in comparision with Bal 17 cells. These results might reflect the signaling differences between mature and immature B cells.
CD28/T cell receptor ligation activates the NF-${\kappa}B$ signaling cascade during CD4 T cell activation. NF-${\kappa}B$ activation is required for cytokine gene expression and activated T cell survival and proliferation. Recently, many reports showed that NF-${\kappa}B$ activation is also involved in T helper (Th) cell differentiation including Th17 cell differentiation. In this review, we discuss the current literature on NF-${\kappa}B$ activation pathway and its effect on Th17 cell differentiation.

This paper considers a cost model for a U-shaped manufacturing cell formation which incorporates a required number of machines and various material flows together under multi-part multi-cell environment. The model is required to satisfy both the specified operation sequence of each part and the total part demand volume, which are considered to derive material handling cost in U-shaped flow line cells. In the model several cost-incurring factors including set-up for batch change-over, processing time for operations of each part, and machine failures are also considered in association with processing load and capacity of each cell. Moreover, a heuristic for a good machine layout in each cell is newly proposed based on the material handling cost of each alternative sequence layout. These all are put together to present an efficient heuristic for the U-shaped independent-cell formation problem, numerical problems are solved to illustrate the algorithm.

Inter-cell coordination has been an emerging issue for mitigating inter-cell interference in broadband wireless access networks such as IEEE802.16 and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution). This paper proposes uplink/downlink hybrid inter-cell coordination patterns for a TDD (Time Division Duplex)/MC-CDMA (Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access) system. For the performance analysis, closed forms of inter-cell interferences are derived when uplink and downlink transmissions coexist over a multi-cell environment. In the analysis, we find an optimal ratio of downlink transmit powers of BSs (Base Stations) based on the target outage probability and the performance according to ratios of uplink/downlink transmit powers of MSs (Mobile Stations)/BSs is explored. Our numerical results show that interference mitigation utilizing the characteristics of the uplink and downlink power ratio is very effective in improving system performance in terms of QoS.

This paper describes a task level cell programming environment that deals with difficulties in programming Flexible Manufacturing Cells (FMCs), and consists of the cell programming editor and the automatic generation module. In the cell programming editor, cell programs can be developed with task- oriented cell specifications that reduces the amount of details to be considered by cell programmers. The automatic generation module transforms task specifications into executable programs used by cell constituents. The development tool in designing the environment is an object-oriented approach which provides a simple to use and intuitive user interface, and allows for an easy development of object models associated with the environment. Test results are illustrated in order to demonstrate the applicability of the developed envifonment.
In order to investigate whether or not CCD-980sk cell line can be affected by Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs, we examined the MTT assay when we treated Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs in CCD-986sk human fibroblast cell line. The samples that added complex of grinded extracts of Korean Citrus junos and boiling-water extracts from Korean medicinal herbs were tested toy cell proliferation activity by means of a modification of the MTT assay. Among mixture of Citron 3 (Citron 3, less mellowed citron which was ripened for three months) and boiling-water extracts, the group Citron 3+Phellinus linteus showed significantly strong cell proliferation activity. And among mixture of Citron 4 (Citron 4, completely mellowed citron which was ripened for four months) and boiling-water extracts, the group Citron 4+Cordyceps militaris and Citron 4+Phellinus linteus showed significantly strong cell proliferation activity, respectively. These results suggest that complex of Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs could be an excellent candidate toy protection of human skin aging.
The brain is an organ that consists of various cell types. As our knowledge of the structure and function of the brain progresses, cell type-specific research is gaining importance. Together with advances in sequencing technology and bioinformatics, cell type-specific transcriptome studies are providing important insights into brain cell function. In this review, we discuss 3 different cell type-specific transcriptome analyses i.e., Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM), Translating Ribosome Affinity Purification (TRAP)/RiboTag, and single cell RNA-Seq, that are widely used in the field of neuroscience.
