There are a few thousand abandoned metal mines in South Korea. The abandoned mines cause several environmental problems including releasing acid mine drainage (AMD), which contain a very high acidity and heavy metal ions such as Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As. Iron oxides can be formed from the AMD by increasing the solution pH and inducing precipitation. Current study focused on the formation of iron oxide in an AMD and used the oxide for adsorption of heavy metals. The heavy metal adsorbed iron oxide was separated with a superconducting magnet. The duration of iron oxide formation affected on the type of mineral and the degree of magnetization. The removal rate of heavy metal by the adsorption process with the formed iron oxide was highly dependent on the type of iron oxide and the solution pH. A high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system successfully separated the iron oxide and harmful heavy metals.
All the applications of natural zeolites make use of one or more of their physical and chemical properties: adsorption, ion-exchange and related molecular sieve properties, dehydration and rehydration, and siliceous composition. Accordingly, the applications of zeolite have been carried out in the various aspects because of its large cation exchange capacity and adsorption properties. In this paper, the adsorption effect of heavy metal ions in wastewater on zeolite mineral by batch adsorption process is studied. The amounts of adsorbed ions were variable by original pH and ionic concentration, especially original pH of solution had an important effect on the adsorption. In case of low pH solution, e.g. below 3.0, clinoptilolite adsorbed $Pb^{2+}$ ,$ Cd ^{2+ }$ , $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{ 2+}$ , but mordenite almost did not adsorb except $Pb^{2+}$ . Under the same conditions, these ions were more adsorbed on clinoptilolite than on mordenite mineral. The velocity of adsorption was relatively fast and it was confirmed by shaking test that the equilibrium of adsorption could be attained in about one hour. The species of exchangeable cation of zeolite had an effect on its removing ability and zeolite of the sodium-exchanged type was the best.
Micropollutants, which can be caused by imperfect combustion, are toxic chemical compound that flows into the river system after being contained in road runoff, a non-point source pollutant and accumulates in the body. The micropollutants that have characteristics such as toxicity, persistence, bio-accumulation, long-range transportation behave so similarly to micro particles that they can be removed by means of filtration or absorption. This study has examined the kinds and concentrations of micropollutants contained in deposited road particles. It has revealed that the kinds of micropollutants contained in the clarified supernatant liquid of deposited road particles are heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) composed of two or three benzene rings, including naphthalene and acenaphthalene. Their concentrations have been shown to be low, with 0.418 mg/L, 0.058 mg/L, 0.104 mg/L, 0.014 mg/L, 0.00075 mg/L for Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd, respectively and 0.00156 mg/L and 0.00184 mg/L for naphthalene and acenaphthalene.

This study is an experimental research on the adsorption capacity and the adsorption system utilizing Discarded Automotive Tires(DAT) and Powdered or Granular Activated Carbon(PAC or GAC) for the removal of heavy metals, Ag(I), Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II). Batch shaking test was conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of DA T and PAC in removing the heavy metals from aqueous wastes; and laboratory-scale column experiment was performed to present design factors affecting the optimum design of adsorption column with DAT and GAC, through the concept of Bed Deph/Service Time(BDST). As results, DAT has been proven to be a good adsorbent will its adsorption capacity not falling behind PAC or GAC. Factors affecting heavy metals removals were amount of adsorbents, initial concentrations, pH and so on. BDST equations were compared with values presented by the breakthrough data from adsorption system.
The feasibility of soil washing was investigated in the laboratory to treat heavy metals-contaminated railway soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Specially, EDTA, which are well known as most effective washing agent to remove heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove heavy metals in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was most effective. The removal of Cd, Cu, and Pb was high, however, that for Zn and Ni was less than 30% with 0.5 M HCl. This difference comes from analytical methods (Korean Standard Test Method for Soil). Aqua regia was used to extract Zn and Ni, however 0.1 N HCl was used for other metals. As a result, simple washing technology is not effective, to treat railway contaminated soil with heavy metals.
The amount of the contaminants that can be adsorbed on the drain was evaluated for the effective remediation of the contaminated soil, and the contaminants adsorptivity of the drain was evaluated by comparing the isothermal adsorption model after carrying out the contaminants adsorption test of the reactants coated on the surface of the drain. The reactant used in the experiment is a natural zeolite, and the contaminants are copper, lead and cadmium. The results that Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model are compared to the adsorption amount according to the change of the initial concentration by the contaminants. As a result of the component analysis, because Si, Al and O are contained approximately 28%, 11% and 48%, respectively, it is identified that the material coated on the surface of the drain is the component of the zeolite which is the reactant for the adsorption of the heavy-metal (Cu, Pb, Cd) contaminants. The heavy-metal adsorption kinetic of the zeolite which is the reactant was decreased in order of lead, copper and cadmium. The important factor of the performance evaluation of the adsorbent is the reaction rate, and if zeolite is used as the reactant in the relationship between the maximum amount of adsorption and reaction rate, it can be utilized as the design factor that determine the removal order of the complex heavy-metal. In other words, because the maximum adsorption quantity of lead is smaller compared to copper but the reaction rate is relatively fast, it can be primarily removed, and copper can be removed after removing the lead. It was analyzed that Cadmium can be finally removed after that other heavy-metal is removed.
Urban stormwater runoff contains heavy metals that accumulate in on-site treatment systems, thus resulting to facility deterioration and maintenance problems. In order to resolve these problems, low impact development (LID) technologies that promote natural materials circulation are widely used. LID facilities are capable of treating heavy metals in the runoff by means of plant uptake; however, the uptake or phytoremediation capabilities of plants have not been studied extensively, making it difficult to select the most suitable plant species for a certain LID design. This study investigated the vegetative components of an LID facility, roadside plants, and plants in landscape areas with different heavy metal exposure and frequency to determine the uptake capabilities of different plant species. The plants harvested inside the LID facilities and roadsides with high vehicular traffic exhibited greater heavy metal concentrations in their tissues as compared with the plants in landscape areas. Generally, the accumulation of heavy metals in the plant tissues were found to be influenced by the environmental characteristics (i.e. influent water quality, air pollution level, etc.). Dianthus, Metasequoia, Rhododendron lateritium, and Mugwort were found to be effective in removing Zn in the urban stormwater runoff. Additionally, Dianthus, Metasequoia, Mugwort, and Ginkgo Biloba exhibited excellent removal of Cu. Cherry Tree, Metasequoia, and mugwort efficiently removed Pb, whereas Dianthus was also found to be effective in treating As, Cr, and Cd in stormwater. Overall, different plant species showed varying heavy metal uptake capabilities. The results of this study can be used as an effective tool in selecting suitable plant species for removing heavy metals in the runoff from different land use types.
In this study, the effect of pH and temperature on the adsorption behavior of acid mine drainage (AMD) on coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) has been investigated during the treatment of coal mine drainage (CMD) by electrical purification method. The pH$_{zero\;point\;charge}$ (pH$_{zpc}$) of CMDS was 5. The removal ratio of copper, zinc, cadmium, iron were increased according to the increase of pH value. The adsorption amount of copper showed 0.64 mg g$^{-1}$ sludge. It was independent of pH value. The adsorption amount of the other metals showed l.l times when pH was 3. The adsorption amount of chromium was a little bit increased at the pH value higher than 7 due to a small amount of the chromium was eluted as $Cr(OH)_6^{3-}$. The amount of metals' absorption were decreased according to temperature was increase at pH value was 3. The selectivity order was Cd>Fe > Zn > Cu. The amount of absorption showed q$_{max}$ Cu 2.747 mg g$^{-1}$ andZn 2.525 mg g$^{-1}$ when pH value higher than 5. It was independent of temperature.

The independent anoxic reactor was introduced in biological aerated filters as the regulation of water quality requirement, especially total nitrogen, had been strengthened. The process studied in this work was upflow $Biobead^{(R)}$ process which was used commercial invented for removal of organic materials and nitrification. For the purpose of evaluating the independent anoxic reactor, PCR-DGGE, of the molecular biological methods, was performed. Two types of nitrite reductase genes were selected. One is nirS represented cytocrome $cd_1$ nitrite reductase gene and the other is nirK represented Cu-containing nitrite reductase gene. Denitrifier community in the independent anoxic reactor was analyzed with PCR-DGGE using these two denitrifying functional genes. As the result of the PCR, only nirS gene was detected between nirS and nirK. With the result of the DGGE, specific bands became strong, as the operating days were longer, nitrate loading rate was increased. otherwise those of the initial activated sludge showed various bands. In the consequence of the sequence of DGGE bands, various denitrifiers were sequenced in the initial activated sludge, while specific denitrifiers like alcaligenes faecalis were predominant in the anoxic reactor. Consequently, introduction of the independent anoxic reactor made it possible to achieve 96% denitrification efficiency, and was proper for the modification of BAF process.
This study of adsorption and column percolation was conducted to examine the utilization of natural zeolite for the removal of heavy metals from waste water to compare with that of absorption activated carbon. The adsorption of heavy metals by natural zeolite was conformed to the Freundlich isotherm (1/n values: $0.12{\sim}0.45$, K values: $18.77{\sim}59.48$) and natural zeolite was turned out to be an effective adsorbent of heavy metals. At the same particle size and percolation velocity, zeolite adsorbed a greater amount of heavy metals was adsorbed on natural zeolite than activated carbon. The smaller the particle size, the more heavy metals that were adsorbed. It was postulated that the most effective size as an adsorbent of heavy metals from waste water ranged from 0.5 to 2.0mm. The slower the percolation velocity that of the heavy metal solution in column, the more heavy metals were adsorbed. Natural zeolite in a single solution adsorbed more heavy metals than that in mixed solution, and the order of the adsorption amount on natural zeolite was Cu>Zn>Cd.
