  • Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo (IE) and impulse response (IR) was performed to detect the rear cavity of concrete for a test-bed which was made with the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. The test-bed was designed to be capable of observing various response reflecting the existence of iron reinforcing bar and cavity. GPR survey did not clearly resolve the existence of the cavity, although distinguishable responses were observed in the presence of the cavity. In contrast, IE and IR method showed distinct responses, indicating the existence of the cavity. Finally, integrated application of the three methods makes it possible to exactly identify the location of the cavity, although the iron reinforcing bar made a little variation of response.

  • Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of i-scan in the differential diagnosis of oral cavity leukoplakia based on visualization of abnormal vascular features. Materials & Methods: Thirty- one patients with oral cavity leukoplakia were enrolled in the study. Images of their oral cavity obtained using conventional white light endoscopy and an i-scan-enhanced endoscopy (Pentax DEFINA EPK-3000 Video Processors, with Pentax VNLJ10) were reviewed. The microvascular features of the lesions and vascular changes were analyzed and the results were compared with the histopathologic diagnosis. Results: Among the 31 oral cavity leukoplakia patients, 8 (25.8%) patients revealed hyperkeratosis, 10 (31.2%) low-grade dysplasia, 5 (16.2%) high-grade dysplasia and 8 (25.8%) invasive squamous cell carcinoma on histopathologic examination. Using i-scan-enhanced endoscopy, we could found abnormal vascular change with neoplastic neoangiogenesis in most high-grade dysplasia or invasive cancer in oral cavity. (high-grade dysplasia: 4/5 [80.0%], and invasive squamous cell carcinoma: 7/8 [87.5%]). Conclusion: i-scan-enhanced endoscopy could be a useful optical technique for the diagnosis of oral cavity leukoplakia. Our results suggest that i-scan may be a promising diagnostic tool in the early detection of suspected oral mucosal lesion.

  • Purpose: High risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main source of cervical cancer, nearly up to 100%. Because there are no affordable data regarding the incidence of HPV in different sites of oral cavity, the purpose of this study is to review the previous article and to find out about the incidence and types of HPV in specific areas of oral cavity. Methods: We examined a total of 106 patients with oral cavity cancer for HPV detection. Available DNA chip (MY-HPV chip kit$^{(R)}$, Mygene Co., Korea) was used for the detection of low risk HPV types (6, 11, 34, 40, 42, 43, 44) and high risk HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 54, 56, 58). Patients were previously diagnosed as invasive cancer of oral cavity. Specimen used for HPV detection was extracted from the main mass during resection and were tested for HPV type, performed by a DNA chip method. Results: Histologic results showed that there were squamous cell carcinomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas, cystadenocarcinomas, leiomyosarcoma and etc. Among HPV positive cancer, 2 patients showed positive for high risk HPV type 16, 3 patients showed positive for low risk HPV type 6 and the other 2 patients were positive for other types of HPV. Of the 7 patients with HPV positive, 4 patients were on the tongue, 3 on the lower gingiva. Conclusion: Most of the HPV positive cancers were on the tongue in our study. Cervical cancer of HPV infection is reported to be increasing in our society and because HPV infection largely spreads by sexual contact, the incidence of oral cancer with HPV infection is greatly assumed to be on the increase, simultaneously. Because the incidence of HPV on specific areas of oral cavity among oral cancer patients is not identified, more studies are ongoing.

  • The leakage of water under sewer pipelines is one of main sources of sinkholes in urban areas. We performed laboratory model tests to investigate the presence of cavities using impact-echo method, which is a nondestructive test method. To simulate a concrete sewer pipe, a thin concrete plate was built and placed over container filled with sand. The cavity was modeled as an extruded polystyrene foam box. Two sets of tests were performed, one over sand and the other on cavity. A new impact device was developed to apply a consistent high frequency impact load on the concrete plate, thereby increasing the reliability of the test procedure. The frequency and transient characteristics of the measured reflected waveforms were analyzed via fast Fourier transform and short time Fourier spectrum. It was shown that the shapes of Fourier spectra are very similar to one another, and therefore cannot be used to predict the presence of cavity. A new index, termed resonance duration, is defined to record the time of vibration exceeding a prescribed intensity. The results showed that the resonance duration is a more effective parameter for predicting the presence of a cavity. A value of the resonance period was proposed to estimate the presence of cavity. Further studies using various soil types and field tests are warranted to validate the proposed approach.

  • Quantitative measurement of trace ethane is important in environmental science and biomedical applications. For these applications, we typically require a few tens of part-per-trillion level measurement sensitivity. To measure trace-level ethane, we constructed a cavity ring-down spectroscopy setup in the 3.37 ㎛ mid-infrared wavelength range, which is applicable to multi-species chemical analysis. We demonstrated that the detection limit of ethane is approximately 300 parts per trillion, and the measured concentration is in agreement with the amounts of the injected sample. We expect that these results can be applied to the chemical analysis of ethane and applications such as breath test equipment.

  • Recently many sinkholes have appeared in urban areas of Korea, threatening public safety. To predict the occurrence of sinkholes, it is necessary to investigate the existence of cavity under urban roads. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been recognized as an effective means for detecting underground cavity in urban areas. In order to improve the understanding of the governing physical processes associated with GPR wave propagation, and interpret underground cavity effectively, a theoretical approach using numerical modeling is required. We have developed an algorithm employing a three-dimensional (3D) staggered-grid finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. This approach allows us to model the full electromagnetic wavefield associated with GPR surveys. We examined the GPR response for a simple cavity model, and the modeling results showed that our 3D FDTD modeling algorithm is useful to assess the underground cavity under urban roads.

  • Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo and impulse response for detection of the rear cavity of concrete was performed on the test-bed which was made in the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. GPR survey may roughly delineate the location of the cavity, but applying the IE and IR technique to the test-bed, the location was clearly identified.

  • X-ray cavities are typically detected as surface brightness depression in X-ray diffuse emission from hot gas in high resolution X-ray images (i.e., Chandra and XMM-Newton). Showing the coincidence of location with radio jets, X-ray cavities imply that the radio jets interact with interstellar/intergalactic medium. It is important to understand them since they can be a clue of understanding AGN feedback to their host galaxies. To understand the physics of the AGN feedback, X-ray cavity has been actively studied while there are only a few statistical studies on X-ray cavity based on small or incomplete samples. Hence, a systematic study with a large sample is needed. With the condition of sufficient X-ray photons to detect surface brightness depression, we constructed a large sample of 133 galaxy clusters, galaxy groups, and individual galaxies to investigate X-ray cavities. We detected 201 cavities from 94 objects using two detection methods (i.e., beta-modeling and unsharp masking method), and confirmed the cavity size-distance relation over a large dynamical range. The size-distance relation does not vary for different environments (i.e., galaxy cluster, groups, and individual galaxies), suggesting that there is little environmental effect on the formation of X-ray cavity.
