  • In the cavitation tunnel, the first corner playes role for the flow direction to execute 90-degree turn. So, energy loss is serious, and the cavitation phenomena well occur in the guide vane surface. In this paper, the flow in the first corner was numerically calculated. From the calculation result, cavitation phenomena mainly occurred in the suction side of the last guide vane and vicinity that vane and tunnel wall adjoin each other. And bubbles occurred from all guide vanes if the flow velocity in the test section reaches the any critical value. We could analogize with our experience in the water tunnel that bubbles that occurred in time not vanish, and become miniature in the flow although the pressure recover. So, they circulate with flow in the tunnel, and come into view in the test section. Therefore, first corner must be designed for bubbles not to appear in the test section according to the flow condition like velocity and pressure demanded by the experiment. We analyzed flow in case that the first elbow configuration was redesigned and some of the existing guides vanes were eliminated. And we presented that first elbow can be easely designed for the improvement of tunnel performance through the computational analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cavitating flow of the multistage centrifugal pump. Cavitation is observed in the impeller leading edge and trailing edge of the suction area. Head coefficients are measured under different flow operating conditions. The Rayleigh-Plesset cavitation model is adapted to predict the occurrence of cavitation in the pump. The two-phase gas-liquid homogeneous CFD method is used to analyze the centrifugal pump performances with two equation transport turbulence model. The simulations are carried out with three different flow coefficients such as 0.103, 0.128 and 0.154. The occurrence of cavitation described according to water vapor volume fraction. The head versus NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) also measured using different flow coefficients. Development of cavitation in the centrifugal pump impellerI is discussed. It is showed that the simulation represents the head drop about 3%.

  • Since the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow is the difficulty topic, a numerical simulation for two phase flow remains as one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around conical body combined with cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with k-e turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations. Also, the calculation of cavitation in cryogenic fluid is being done by implementing the temperature sensitivity in government equations and it is still in the progress. This code have been being further extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics around inducers and impellers in turbo pump system.

  • The breakup of liquid jet is the result of competing, unstable hydrodynamic forces acting on the liquid jet as it exit the nozzle. The nozzle geometry and up-stream injection conditions affect the characteristics of flow inside the nozzle, such as turbulence and cavitation bubbles. A set of calculation of the internal flow in a single hole type nozzle were performed using a two dimensional flow simulation under different nozzle geometry and up-stream flow conditions. The calculation showed that the turbulent intensity and discharge coefficient are related to needle position. The diesel nozzle with sharp inlet under actual engine condition has possibility of cavitation, but round inlet nozzle has no possibility of cavitation.

  • In the present study, a practical method to predict cavitation erosion, which caused a critical damage on hydraulic machineries, was developed. Impact and critical velocities were defined to develop a practical method for the prediction of cavitation erosion. To develope the practical method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced. Cavitating flows with erosion in a converging-diverging nozzle and around a hydrofoil were simulated by developed and validated code. Based on the CFD results, the cavitation erosion coefficient was derived by a curve fitting method. The cavitation erosion coefficient was formulated as the function of the cavitation and Reynolds numbers. A cavitating flow in an axisymmetric nozzle followed by radial divergence was simulated to validate the developed practical method. For the application to a propeller, a cavitating flow around a propeller was simulated. Predicted damage extent showed similar with damaged full-scale propeller blade.

  • For a certain operating point of a horizontal shaft bulb turbine (i.e. volume flow, net head, blade angle, guide vane angle) the efficiency for different pressure levels (i.e. different Thoma-coefficient ${\sigma}$) is calculated using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD-)-code including two-phase flow and a cavitation model. The results are compared with experimental results achieved at a closed loop test rig for model turbines. The comparison of the experimentally and numerically obtained efficiency and the visual impression of the cavitation show a good agreement. Especially the drop in efficiency is calculated with satisfying accuracy. This drop in efficiency in combination with the visual impression is of high practical importance since it contributes to determine the admissible cavitation in a bulb-turbine. It is seen that the incipient cavitation in Kaplan type turbines has no major importance in determing this admissible amount of cavitation.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of properties of diesel and biodiesel fuels on the nozzle cavitation and the effect of the length/diameter(L/D) ratio on internal and external flow pattern of nozzle at the various injection conditions. In order to study the effect of the L/D ratio on the nozzle cavitation characteristics of diesel and biodiesel, the characteristics of cavitation flow in the nozzle are visualized and analyzed at the injection pressure of 0.1 MPa to 0.7 MPa by using the visualized images. It was founded that the cavitation was formed in the nozzle orifice at the low injection pressure and the breakup of the issuing liquid jet was promoted at the low L/D ratio. When the L/D ratio decrease, cavitation beginning and growth were affect by cavitation number and Reynolds number.

  • Based on the consideration that the cavitation would affect the operation stability of miniature pumps, the 3-D turbulent cavitating flow in a test pump was simulated by using a mixed cavitation model and k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of inlet geometry parameters on the cavitation performance of the miniature pump, two more impellers are designed for comparison. Based on the results, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Cavitation performance of the double suction shaft-less miniature pump having different impeller is equivalent to the centrifugal pump having ordinary size, though the flow passage at impeller inlet is small; 2) The miniature pump having radial impeller can produce much higher pump head, but lower cavitation performance than that having the impeller based on the conventional design method; 3) It is believed that by applying the double suction design, the miniature pump achieved relatively uniform flow pattern upstream the impeller inlet, which is favorable for improving cavitation performance.

  • The attachment of inducer upstream of main impeller is an effective method to improve the suction performance of turbopump. However, various types of cavitation instabilities are known to occur even at the designed flow rate as well as in the partial flow rate region. The cavitation surge occurring at partial flow rates is known to be strongly associated with the inlet back flow. In the present study, in order to understand the detailed structure of internal flow of inducer, we firstly carried out the experimental and numerical studies of non-cavitating flow, focusing on the flow field near the inlet throat section and inside the blade passage of a two bladed inducer at a partial flow rate. The steady flow simulation with cavitation model was also made to investigate the difference of flow field between in the cavitating and no-cavitating conditions.

  • Propellent should be pressurized inside the turbopump to gain high thrust in a projectile. Turbopump is composed of an inducer, which prevents impeller performance deterioration, and an impeller. Several types of cavitation occur inside the inducer, numerous experiments and CFD simulations are conducted. Though, an inducer takes only small portion of total head of the pump and the following impeller determines whole turbopump performance. In addition, low inlet pressure makes the flow to be cavitated not only at the inducer, but also at the impeller in real cases. Therefore, flow through an inducer and an impeller should considered simultaneously. In this study, LOX pump composed of an inducer and an impeller is analyzed by using commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX 13.0. Non-cavitating flow with high inlet pressure and cavitating flow with low inlet pressure are both simulated and head, suction performances are shown. Evolution of the flow and the cavitation by reducing cavitation number and effect of cavitation on pump performance are studied.
