Aramid fibers have been widely used as the reinforcement for composites due to their high modulus and strength. Nowadays the safety measures is required to improve the personal protection. The dyeing of aramid fibers is considered to be very difficult and their dyeing mechanism is not well illucidated. Therefore, this study is to establish the dyeing & printing technology for aramid fibers. The effects of swelling agent and neutral salt in the dye bath on the obtained colors were studied. Also dyeing method of aramid fibers depending on dyeing temperature and dye concentration were established. Color fastness of the dyed aramid fabric with cationic dyes were acceptable excluding light fastness.
Heat and flame protecting cloth is usually made of meta aramid fiber because of its own properties. But the high inter molecular hydrogen bonding and high Tg is the reason of the difficulty to dye meta aramid fiber. Recently, it was commercialized that the easily dyeable meta aramid fiber(AMD) for improving dyeability. In this study, the dyeing properties of AMD dyed with cationic dyes were investigated. The K/S values of AMD were 5~10% higher than these of general meta aramid fiber(AM) in the case of 1%owf caused by the lower crystallinity of AMD. The difference between K/S values of AMD and AM was increased as increasing dyeing concentration. The washing and rubbing fastness grade of AM and AMD were similar and good to very good.
Polyester fibers can be modified into cationic dyeable polyester fibers(CDP) by the copolymerization of terephthalic acid and 5-sodium sulphoisophthalic acid with ethylene glycol. The advantage of CDP on most cationic dyes is the conspicuous brilliance due to a narrow steep absorption band and the wash fastness and etc. Weight reduction by alkali hydrolysis, dyeing and solvent wicking properties of fabrics with cationic dyes, and change of fine structure were investigated. To obtain optimum splitting process parameters for dyeing and physical properties of micro CDP fiber, splitting method under various conditions was carried out. By means of SEM, it was confirmed that the splitting process of the micro CDP fiber be achieved at the weight reduction. A comparatively greater quantity of dye is necessary to dye microfiber than conventional fiber. The fastness and solvent wicking of regular CDP fiber is higher than that of micro CDP fiber.
Cationic azo dyes were synthesized by coupling aniline and its derivatives with 2,4-dimethyl imidazole as a coupler, and their photochromic behavior was investigated. The dyes exhibited little photochromism on wool, but to a considerable degree on Dacron T92(anionic modified polyester), the photochromism being prominent for the dye with electron-releasing substituent on diazo component. Little photochromism on wool can be attributed to a decreased mobility of dye by the various interactions between the dye and wool molecules, which interferes the cis-trans isomeriation of dye. On Dacron T92 there can not be any obstacle for the cis-trans isomerization of dye, hence reversible color change may occur. The electron-releasing substituent on diazo component may be helpful for the photochromism of dye by increasing the n-electron density of phenyl ring, which can stabilize the cis-form of the dye by the interaction with the positive charge of imidazole ring.
Exhaustion increase using cationic dyes on polyamide fibers are not easy work due to the limited amounts of the functional end groups(-COOH) in the substrates. Therefore, to enhance dye exhaustion, polyamide fibers are required to be modified onto desired surface properties of the fibers using anionic bridging agent. In this study, synthetic tanning agent for pre-treatment finishing and cationic dye(berberine chloride) for dyeing of polyamide fibers were used. For surface modification, polyamide fibers were pre-treated with synthetic tanning agent at various concentrations and temperatures. The increased concentration and temperatures of synthetic tanning agents had resulted in exhaustion increase. The modified polyamide substrates skewed increased cationic dyeing exhaustions and the corresponding dyeing results from treated samples represented higher exhaustion properties than those of non-treated counterpart. The increased dyeing effects of cationic dye can be attributed to the supplied ionic interaction and electrostatic attraction sites on the surface of polyamide substrates.
This study investigated the substantivity of anionic dyes for cationic-modified new rayon (cocell) fabric treated with cationic agent (CA), 3-(Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)-trimethylammonium chloride (CA). We also investigate the dyeability of cationic-modified new rayon fabric after dyeing with gallut. CA was converted in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide into epoxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride. Treating with this epoxy reagent modified the hydroxyl groups of the new rayon fabric into the trimethylammonium group through ether linkage. The introduction of new cationic sites into new rayon fabric by pretreating with cationic agent improved the substantivity of the Gallnut dye with the new rayon dyebath. The degree of the cationization of cationic-modified new rayon and cotton fabric was evaluated by nitrogen (N) content. This study extracted the colorant of gallnut with hot water at $90^{\circ}C$ and 120 min. Cationic-modified new rayon fabric dyed with extracted solution from gallnut according to concentration of gallnut, dyeing temperature, dyeing time and concentration of cationic agent. Dyeability (K/S) was obtained by CCM observation after dyeing with gallut solution. In addition, fastness to washing and light were also investigated. The degree of crystallinity of new rayon and cotton fabric were 42.15% and 54.94%, respectively. N (%) content of cationic-modified new rayon was higher than the cationic-modified cotton. Dyeability (K/S) increased significantly with the increasing concentration of CA and gallut.
In order to study the dyeability of reactive dyes fixable at neutral pH, three reactive dyes(DYE-NC, DYE-PC, and DYE-LC) were prepared by the reaction of Cibacron Brilliant Red 3B-A with nicotinic acid, pyridine, and lutidine, respectively. FT-IR and UV/Vis spectrophometry were used to identify the dyes prepared. While the maximum absorption wavelength (&{\lambda}_{max}&) of Cibacron Brilliant Red 3B-A was 515nm, the &{\lambda}_{max}& of DYE-NC, DYE-PC, and DYE-LC were 522nm, 525nm, and 536nm, respectively. The &{\lambda}_{max}& was shifted to the longer wavelength by introducing the electron donating groups to the pyridine ring of Cibacron Brilliant Red 3B-A. All of the reactive dyes synthesized showed good exhaustion and fixation property to cotton fabric at higher temperature and neutral pH condition. It was regarded that the quaternary pyridinium ion functionated as the leaving group instead of the chloride ion. Among them, DYE-NC showed the best dyeability at the above condition. It was considered that the electron withdrawing carboxylic acid group in nicotinic acid enhanced the cationic property of nitrogn in pyridine ring, resulting the good reactivity with OH group in cellulose.
The adsorption ability of dyes on chitin, a natural polymer was investigated for decolorization of dye wastewater. Chitin was manufactured in lab by decalcification in dilute aqueous HCI solution and deproteination in dilute aqueous NaOH solution with shrimp shells. Absorbance of residue solution of dyebaths after dye adsorptions of chitin were measured in varieties of dye concentration and dipping periods. Four kinds of dyestuffs were used, C.I.Acid Blue 29. C.I.Direct Blue 6, C.I.Reactive Orange 12 and C.I.Basic Red 18. When chtin 1g was dipped in 0.05% of dyebath with stirring, maximum adsorption ratio of each kind of dyes was exhibited as 91.6% for C.I.Acid Blue 29, 95% for C.I.Direct Blue 6, 58.2% for C.I.Reactive Orange 13 and 75.8% for C.I.Basic Red 19. It shows that chitin has better adsorption abilities of ionic dyes of acid, direct and basic dye than non-ionic reactive dye. And chitin has better adsorption abilities of anionic acid direct dyes than cationic basic dye because of the presence of nitrogen atoms. All kinds of dyestuffs used showed speedy absorption effects by chitin, so chitin can absorb much amount of dyes in 5 mimutes reach to equilibrium of adsorption in 2 hours after dipping. Basic dye was absorbed the most speedily in 5 minutes, although maximum adsorption ratio is not high. That reason can be thought that chitin surface is essentially negatively charged due to polar funtional groups.
