  • This study was designed to understand the relationships among the soil physical and chemical properties and to obtain the useful regression to calculate the cation exchange capacity, field capacity, wilting point moisture content and organic matter content. Fourteen soil properties were collected from 315 representative soil series in Korea. Simple and multiple regression were analyzed with the data by grouping land use, drainage class and soil depth. The multiple regression equations which can be calculated the cation exchange capacity from clay and organic matter content were found out. Cation exchange capacity of clay was 22me/100g, and that of organic matter was 103.3me/100g. Moisture retentions, both of wilting point moisture content and field capacity, were closely related to clay and organic matter content. The coefficient of clay was increased with drainage class changed more poor but the coefficient of organic matter was highest at moderately well drained soil. Organic matter content can be calculated by soil texture and pH. Organic matter content was decreased by in creasing the pH. The highly significant regressions were found between base saturation and pH.

  • Ion exchange (IX) performance on the exchanger bed is essentially evaluated for the generation of ultrapure water in electronics and chemical industries and for the corrosion control in nuclear power plants. The breakthrough characteristics of IX bed with multi-component were investigated with both cation- and mixed-IX beds of H- and ETAH-form for four kinds of cation exchange resins by using the combined solution of ethanolamine (ETA) and ammonia (NH3) at trace NaCl. Unlike major components (ETAH+ and NH4+ ), the phenomena of breakthrough and overshooting at bed outlet were not observed by Na+ over the test period (> 3 times theoretical exchange capacity of IX bed). The breakthrough from H-form resin bed was sequentially reached by ETAH+ and NH4+, while the overshooting was observed for ETAH+ at the breakthrough of NH4+. NH4+ was 51.5% higher than ETAH+ in terms of the relative selectivity determined with the width of breakthrough zone. At the increased concentration of Na+ at bed inlet, the selectivity and the overshooting were decreased and increased, respectively. Na+ leakage was higher from ETAH-form resin bed and was not identical for four kinds of cation-exchange resins, which may be reduced by improving the intrinsic property of IX resin.

  • This study was tried to interpret the important major factors controlling some physicochemical properties by comparing mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics such as pH, cation exchange capacity, Methylene Blue adsorption amount, swelling, viscosity, strength (compressional and tensile), and surface area etc. Investigated bentonite samples are five Korean samples from Dusan, Naa, Oksan, Dongyang, and Yeonil deposits and two Japanese bentonites from Tsukinuno and Tomioka deposits which were formed under a similar geological environment of the Tertiary basin. Tsukinuno bentonite is only natural Na-type bentonite and the others are all Ca-type bentonites. Most of the properties are not explained by the montmorillonite content only though the most important factor controlling the physicochemical properties is the montmorillonite content. The layer charge of montmorillonite will strongly control cation exchange capacity and Methylene Blue adsorption. Zeolite bearing bentonites show the strong alkaline character and causes the increase of cation exchange capacity, however decrease swelling, viscosity and strengths. Pyrite bearing bentonites decrease green compressional strength and wet tensile strength. The exchangeable interlayer cations control some physicochemical properties. Na-type bentonite than Ca-type shows more strong alkaline character and much more advanced swelling and viscosity. Also the size and thickness of montmorillonite flakes seem to control some physicochemical properties. Bentonite mainly composed of montmorillonite of very thin and large flakes is characterized by the very high surface area, cation exchange capacity, viscosity, swelling, Methylene Blue adsorption, green compressional strength and wet tensile strength. Domestic Dusan bentonite shows the most excellent physicochemical properties, which is due to the high content(84%) and very well crystallinity of montmorillonite.

  • The sulfonated ion exchange fibers were synthesized by $Co^{60}\;{\gamma}-ray$ radiation-induced graft copolymerization. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the total dose. The degree of grafting for POF-g-St/DVB copolymer was 1000%. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated ion exchange fibers were increased by increasing the degree of sulfonation. Its maximum value was 5.06 meq/g. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated POF- co-St/DVB ion exchange fiber was higher than that of the sulfonated POF- co-styrene ion exchange fibers. The amount of adsorption for heavy metals were also increased with increase in the degree of grafting of the ion exchange fibers.

  • In this study, we have developed cation-exchange membranes (CEMs) which can efficiently separate heavy-metal ions among the cations contained in a water system. Sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) was used as a base polymer and a powdered chelating resin with strong binding ability to heavy-metal ions was added into it. In order to optimize the performance of the CEM, the content of chelating resin powder and the ion exchange capacity of SPEEK have been controlled. As a result, it was confirmed that the removal efficiency of heavy metal ion was improved by more than 20% by applying the CEM to membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI).

  • This study was carried out to prepare a heterogeneous cation exchange membrane by mixing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), commercial cation exchange resin and sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide)(SPPO) in order to propose an optimum condition for the preparation, and to compare its properties with commercial membrane. Study results show that the ion exchange capacity and electrical resistance were outstanding when the ratio of polymer matrix was less than 30% comparing between PVDF-IER, PVDF-SPPO and PVDF-SPPO-IER. The tensile strength was confirmed that seemed a hard look was five times greater compared to the commercial heterogeneous membrane, despite the weak durability of PVDF resin. Therefore, when chemical and mechanical properties are considered, the optimum mixing ratio between PVDF, IER and SPPO was 30 : 70, at which electric resistance was measured as $3{\sim}5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, ion exchange capacity as 0.6~1.0 meq/g, while mechanical strength was in a range of $12{\sim}15kgf/cm^2$.

  • Prediction of retention times in transition metal-mandelate and transition metal-tartrate complex systems were studied on the cation exchanger. Plots of k' vs [mandelate] and k' vs [tartrate] were obtained under the condition of a constant competing cation concentration. The equation to predict the retention time of transition metal ion was derived from the ion exchange equilibria. Individual capacity factors (${k_1}',\;{k_2}'$) and stability constants ($K_1,\;K_2$) of the complexes were calculated from the non-linear least square method. Good resolution of the transition metals was predicted by the stepwise equation in the gradient method. The values of retention times from the calculation and the experiment agreed well each other.

  • It is a global challenge to fulfill the demand for clean water at an affordable cost to all the strata of the population. Desalination of seawater as well as brackish water by the membrane separation process is a well-established and cost-efficient method. However, there is still inherent problem of membrane fouling, disposal of the reject as well as a capital-intensive process. While electrodialysis (ED) is a membrane-based separation process in which a driving force is the potential difference. The advantages of ED process are excellent efficiency and low operation cost. Ion exchange membrane (IEM) used in the ED process needs to have higher chemical and thermal stability along with excellent mechanical strength for long-term use without losing its efficiency. The ion exchange capacity of the ED membrane is largely dependent on the conductivity of IEMs. In this review, the modification strategy of the pristine membrane to enhance the stability and ion conductivity of cation exchange membrane (CEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) is discussed.

  • Stabilization behavior of Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe and Zn heavy metals in the EAF dust was investigated by adding EAF dust to clay or white clay, respectively, up to 50 wt% with 10 wt% intervals and sintering at temperatures between 200 and $1200^{\circ}C$ with $200^{\circ}C$ intervals with an aid of ICP-AES followed by TCLP test to evaluate heavy metal cation exchange capacity of the clay or the white clay. The clay or the white clay had a better Cr ion exchange capacity than that of zeolite. The TCLP leaching test for the sintered specimens showed that Cr and Fe were rarely detected for all the specimens and the concentration of Cd and Zn decreased with increasing sintering temperature and decreasing EAF dust contents respectively. When the clay or the white clay were mixed with EAF dust, cation exchange may occur between the clay and the EAF dust so that the first stabilization of the mixtures containing semistabilized heavy metals may happen. Stabilization of heavy metals in the ceramic bodies was further completed probably due to the eutectic reaction caused by the sintering of semi-stabilized mixtures. It was conceivable that the white clay rather than the clay may be a better stabilizer for the EAF dust containing heavy metals.
