  • Polypyrrole (PPy), Poly(N-methyl Pyrrole) (PMPy) and Poly(N-phenyl Pyrrole) (PPhPy) films in acetonitrile (Af and propylene carbonate (PC) have been compared focusing on their different ion and solvent transport behaviors. During the redox reaction of PPy films, cation, anion, and solvent take part in mass transport. Whereas during the redox reaction of PMPy and PPhPy films, anion and solvent transport are dominant but cation transport is negligible. In addition, solvent transport occurs in the same direction with cation transport for PPy films. On the other hand, solvent transport occurs in the opposite direction to anion transport for PMPy films, and it changes its amount and direction with the kind of the dopant anion and the solvent used at electropolymerization for PPhPy films.

  • The interaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) and silver cation has been studied in water at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The PVP and PVP/Ag composite was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and oxygen/carbon dioxide analyzer. We identified silver cations interacting with nonbonding electrons of the oxygen atom in the carbonyl group of PVP. It was shown that PVP/Ag formed stable composites.

  • Molecular structures were optimized for the 1,3-diethoxycalix[4]crown-5-ether (2) in the various isomers and their potassium-ion complexes by using B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p)//B1LYP/6-31G(d,p) method after ab initio RHF/6-31G calculation. The cone-shaped isomer of 2 with cr-binding mode has shown the strongest binding efficiency among the six different complexes attributed to seven electrostatic interactions between the potassium cation and the oxygen atoms of crown-5-ether and ethoxy groups of the host (2). The vibrational spectra of 2 and its K+-complexes were obtained by restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) calculations with the 6-31G basis set. The characteristic vibrational frequencies of various C-O-C stretching and bending motions are analyzed.

  • Sericin undergoes gelation by the structural transition from random coil to b-sheet transition. In the present study, the gelation time of sericin solution was investigated in the presence of NaCl, KCl and $CaCl_2$. The addition of salts delayed the gelation time, and $CaCl_2$ had the most pronounced effect, which delayed about 8 h at maximum. The gelation time increased with the concentration of salt. The transition of secondary structure of sericin was retarded in the presence of salt. The effect of salts on the gelation time of sericin might be due to the solvation effect of relevant cation.

  • $Bu_3Sn$-endded poly(vinyl)s with biological activity were obtained by the radical polymerization of vinyl monomers using thianthrene cation radical/$^nBu_3H$. Thianthrene cation and stannyl radicals promoted the homopolymerization and copolymerization of styrene and ethyl vinyl ether having number average molecular weights of 2000-3100. Tributyltin hydride functions as a chain transfer agent. Such polymereization by cationic thianthrene and stannyl radicals could provide some clues for the biological reaction in living animals. Plausible polymerization mechanisms were suggested.

  • LDPE/polystyrene cation exchange membranes were prepared through a monomer-sorption method and UV radiation polymerization. The reaction behaviors in the preparation were investigated. The membranes prepared were characterized in terms of physical and electrochemical properties. The membranes exhibited reasonable properties for an ion-exchange membrane with weight gain (Wr) of above 0.3, electrical resistance of below 1.0 Ω $\textrm{cm}^2$ and ion-exchange capacity of 1.8 meq/g-dry membrane. DSC studies and FE-SEM image revealed the formation of a homogeneous membrane. Both the current-voltage and the chronopotentiometric curves of the membranes indicated that LDPE/polystyrene membranes can be properly used at a high current density, and the surface homogeneity of cation-exchange sites in the membrane was comparable to that in a commercial membrane.

  • preliminary study on the chemical compositions of forty seven precipitations from March 1994 to May 1995 In Yeoncheon-gun, which Is adjacent to the southern boundary of demilitarized zone (DMZ) in the northernmost tip of Kyunggi Province has been Performed. The metal cation and anion concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrometer and ion chromatography, respectively. pH/lon meter and direct nesslerization method were used for the concentration measurements of $H^+$ ion and $NH_46+$ ions, respectively Based on the data, the quantitative orders of the cation and anion average concentrations were $Ca^{2+}>NH_4^+>Na^+>K^+>Mg^{2+}>H^+ and SO_4^{2+}>Cl^-> NO_3^-$, respectively..The ratio of average total anion concentration to average total cation concentration was 0.97. The average pH value of the precipitations was 5.60. These results, correlation coefficients between the ion concentrations, and monthly variations of pH value and precipitation amount are used for chemical analysis on the environmental Pollution and Pollutant sources In Yeoncheon-gun of Kyunggi province near DMZ.

  • Anthracene appended new host compounds have been synthesized by imine reaction. Fluorescent open chain host compounds Trisanthryl-tris(2-aminoethyl)imine 1 was synthesized from the reaction of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and anthracene-9-carboxaldehyde in EtOH. Tris-10-chloroanthryl-tris(2-aminoethyl)imine 2 was synthesized from tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and 10-chloro-9-anthraldehyde in EtOH. The structures of all reaction product were identified by $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, GC/MS, FAB Mass, IR spectrum and DSC. Cation complexation behavior was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy measurements. The capability of transition metals cation recognition between fluorescent open chain host compound 1, 2 were investigated with $Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}\;and\;Cu^{2+}$. The fluorescence intensity was increased by host compounds corresponding guest cations. The relative order of fluorescence intensity changes were $Co^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Ni^{2+}$. Compound 2 is very sensitive fluorescent sensor of $Co^{2+}$ ion.

  • Currently, the commercialized cation exchange membranes have the excellent performance and stability, however their costs are very expensive and they are not still optimized for the several application areas. A number of membranenologists are focused to solve the problems on the development of novel membrane to be applicable to each membrane field. The present will deal with the introduction of the existing membrane materials and their performances.

  • Theoretical studies of the sodium cation binding and the isotope hydration effects on the static model compound B-DNA have been qualitatively elucidated by using empirical potential energy functions. In the first place, the sodium cations bound to phosphate anions and their hydration scheme have been optimized and have given a reasonable agreement with other theoretical results and experimental studies. In the second stage, the isotope effect on the hydration through the substitution of $D_2O\;for\;H_2O$ has been carried out by the same procedure. The stabilization of B-DNA has been explained and compared in terms of the sodium cation binding to phosphate anions and its hydration in both cases of $H_2O\;and\;D_2O$.
