  • In this study, it was conducted a broad-area landslide analysis for the entire area of Kyungsangbuk-do Province based on spatially-distributed wetness index and root reinforcement infinity slope stability theory. Specifically, digital map, soil map and forest map were used to extract topological and geological parameters, and to build spatially-distributed database at $10m{\times}10m$ resolution. Infinity flow direction method was used for rain catchment area to produce spatially-distributed wetness index. The safety level that indicates risk of a broad-area landslide was classified into four groups. The result showed that areas with a high estimated risk of a landslide coincided with areas that recently went through an actual landslide, including Bonghwa and Gimcheon, and unstable areas were clustered around mountainous areas. A comparison between the estimation result and the records of actual landslide showed that the analysis model is effective for estimating a risk of a broad-area landslide based on accumulation of reasonable parameters.

  • Various development works inevitably increase cutting slopes due to land use, and many of trails managed by different authorities are being deteriorated by long-term weathering. Collapse of slopes causes unavoidable damage of property and loss of lives because of its uncertainty and difficulty in predicting its occurrence. In order to overcome the unavoidability, America, Japan, and several European nations analyze the kinetic energy and moving distance when rocks of upper slope move along the inclined plane, via field tests and computerized interpretation of the test results. Also, they are making efforts to develop measures with which the kinetic energy of the rocks moving along the slope is absorbed and fails to reach to specific structures. However, domestic researches just focus on fragmentary prediction of rockfall using existing programs, and there have been few approaches to identify interpretation methods appropriate for domestic cases or determination of parameters. In this context, we in this study defined rockfall types and affecting factors and analyzed effects of parameters using a general-purpose rockfall simulation program to understand principles of rockfall and to estimate effects of various parameters.

  • This study was conducted to develop a hydrological model of catchment water balance which is able to estimate irrigation return flows, so BROOK90-K (Kongju National University) was developed as a result of the study. BROOK90-K consists of three main modules. The first module was designed to simulate water balance for reservoir and its catchment. The second and third module was designed to simulate hydrological processes in rice paddy fields located on lower watershed and lower watershed excluding rice paddy fields. The models consider behavior of floodgate manager for estimating the storage of reservoir, and modules for water balance in lower watershed reflects agricultural factors, such as irrigation period and, complex sources of water supply, as well as irrigation methods. In this study, the models were applied on Guryangcheon stream watershed. R2, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), NS-log1p, and root mean square error between simulated and observed discharge were 0.79, 0.79, 0.69, and 4.27 mm/d respectively in the model calibration period (2001~2003). Furthermore, the model efficiencies were 0.91, 0.91, 0.73, and 2.38 mm/d respectively over the model validation period (2004~2006). In the future, the developed BROOK90-K is expected to be utilized for various modeling studies, such as the prediction of water demand, water quality environment analysis, and the development of algorithms for effective management of reservoir.

  • Recently, with the establishment of active stabilization measures, large-scale collapse of slopes is decreasing. However, the frequency of rockfalls due to the destabilization of floating stones or boulder within or above the slope has not been decreased significantly. As a measure for stabilizing rockfall and disaster prevention, protection methods such as rockfall barriers and rockfall protection nets are typically applied. However, the approach to catching the rockfall in a catchment area by reducing the energy of the rockfall and changing the rolling condition of the rockfall is relatively insignificant. Therefore, in this study, using a general-purpose rockfall simulation program, the change in the rolling characteristics of rockfall according to the specifications of the ditch installed under the slope was investigated. It is expected that the research results can be used as basic data to determine the specifications of the ditch that can be applied to general roads or trails.

  • The Ministry of Environment has been working to reduce the impact on biodiversity, ecosystems, and social costs caused by soil runoff from highland Agricultural fields by setting up non-point pollution source management districts. To reduce soil loss, runoff path reduction technology has been applied, but it has been less cost effective. In addition, non-point pollution sources cause environmental conflicts in downstream areas, and recently highland Agricultural fields are becoming vulnerable to climate change. The Ministry of Environment is promoting the optimal management plan in earnest to convert arable land into forests and grasslands, but since non-point pollution is not a simple environmental problem, it is necessary to approach it from the aspect of NbS(Nature-Based Solution). In this study, a scenario for applying the nature-based solution was established for three subwatersheds west of Haean-myeon, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do. The soil loss distribution was spatialized through GeoWEPP and the amount of soil loss was compared for the non-point pollution reduction effect of mixed forests and grasslands. When cultivated land with a slope of 20% or more and ginseng fields were restored to perennial grasslands and mixed forests, non-point pollution reduction effects of about 32% and 29.000 tons compared to the current land use were shown. Also, it was confirmed that mixed forest rather than perennial grassland is an effective nature-based solution to reduce non-point pollution.

  • Drilled sediment core was acquired from Jinheung catchment which was located at Jeollabuk-do Jeongeup city. Elements concentration variation were studied by neutron activation analysis using sediment core by divided 1 cm depth interval. The concentration of major element such as Na, K were increased but Fe was decrease with depth. Minimum elements concentration and particle size were observed at 17 cm depth. This depth was considered 1969 year which was great dry year recorded from the rain fall data and the sedimentation rate was calculated $0.197g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}year^{-1}$.

  • Successful sediment management at the watershed scale requires an understanding of the erosion, transport and sedimentation processes at the specific site scale. However, studies on the sediment runoff characteristics in a small uppermost watershed, which serves as a sediment supply function, are very rare. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the fluctuations in major sediment supply areas and sediment runoff in the uppermost mountain small watershed, and for this purpose, ArcSWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tools with GIS interface) was applied to the Woldong reservoir catchment located in Gosam-myeon, Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. The model results were manually calibrated using the monitoring data of the Woldong reservoir sedimentation rate from 2005 to 2007. It was estimated that annual average of 34.4 tons/year of sediment was discharged from the Woldong reservoir basin. This estimate almost coincided with the monitoring data of the Woldong reservoir during the low flow period but tended to be somewhat underestimated during the high flow period. Although the SWAT model does not fully reflect the erosion process of gully and in-channel, this underestimation is probably due to the spatial connectivity of sediment transport and the storage and reactivation of the sediment being transported. Most of the forested hillslopes with a well-developed organic horizon were evaluated as having a low risk of erosion, while the places with the highest risk of erosion were predicted to be distributed in the logged area with some weeds or shrubs (classified as pasture) with relatively steeper slopes, and in the bare land. The results of this study are expected to be useful in developing strategies for sediment control and reservoir management.

  • The riparian area plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The Korean government has recognized the importance of protecting riparian areas and has taken steps to purchase land and create ecobelt to reduce non-point source pollutants(NSPs) that can negatively impact water quality. However, selecting the catchment area and calculating the pollution load can be challenging due to the small area of the purchased land and the limitations of low-resolution DEMs. To address these challenges, this study proposes the use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) to create a high-resolution DEM and calculate the pollution load through land cover analysis. This approach can provide a more accurate representation of the land use status and help to identify areas that are contributing to NSPs. The quantitative comparison of the difference in water quality improvement ecosystem services according to the scenarios of additional catchment areas shows that even land purchased for the same amount of money may have different ecosystem service values, and this was quantitatively calculated. This can be used to prioritize future land acquisition. Overall, this study's approach could provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of ecobelt in reducing NSPs and inform future efforts to protect riparian areas in Korea and beyond.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the geology, geologic structure, hydrogeology and geomorphic characteristics of the Nari Basin and establish the controls on the discharge of water 20,000~40,000 m3/day from the Choosan Yongchulso, Ulleung Island, South Korea. Pumice and lapilli tuffs showing well-developed stratification are the predominant rock types surrounding the spring. The spring shows a structure whereby discharge occurs along a lens-like erosion cave formed by differential erosion of strata comprising tuff or pumice tuff. The Choosan Yongchulso is located at the point where the planation surface of the Nari Basin' ends and steep slopes begin. The basin is bounded on all sides by these steep slopes, except in the north, where the Choosan Yongchulso is located. Given these geomorphic characteristics, the Choosan Yongchulso is regarded as the ultimate outlet of the basin catchment area.

  • The effective rainfall is calculated considering the soil moisture. It utilizes observed data directly in order to incorporate the soil moisture into the rainfall-runoff model, or it calculates indirectly within the model. The rainfall-runoff model, IHACRES, used in this study computes the catchment wetness index (CWI) first varying with temperature and utilize it for estimating precipitation loss. The nonlinear relationship between the CWI and the effective rainfall in the Hapcheondam watershed was derived and utilized for the long-term runoff calculation. The effects of variable and constant CWI during calibration and validation were suggested by flow regime. The results show the variable CWI is generally more effective than the constant CWI. The $R^2$ during high flow period shows relatively higher than the ones during normal or low flow period, but the difference between cases of the variable and constant CWI was insignificant. The results indicates that the high flow is relatively less sensitive to the evaporation and soil moisture associated with temperature. On the other hand, the variable CWI gives more desirable results during normal and low flow periods which means that it is crucial to incorporate evaporation and soil moisture depending on temperature into long-term continuous runoff simulation. The NSE tends to decrease during high flow period with high variability which could be natural because NSE index is largely influenced by outliers of underlying variable. Nevertheless overall NSE shows satisfactory range higher than 0.9. The utilization of variable CWI during normal and low flow period would improve the computation of long-term rainfall-runoff simulation.
