Methanol was synthesized by homogeneous and catalytic reactions of partial oxidation of methane. The effect of pressure, temperature and oxygen concentration on methanol synthesis was investigated. The catalyst used was Bi-Cs-Mg-Cu-Mo mixed oxide. The partial oxidation reaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor at 20${\sim}$46 bar and $450{\sim}480^{\circ}C$ and oxygen concentration of 5.3${\sim}$7.7mol%. The results were compared with results of homogeneous reaction performed at the same conditions. Methane conversions of the homogeneous and catalytic reactions increased with temperature. Methanol selectivity of the homogeneous reaction decreased with increasing temperature. However, the methanol selectivity of catalytic reaction increased with temperature. For both homogeneous and catalytic reactions, the methane conversions were around 5%. This may be due to the low oxygen concentration. Methanol selectivity of the catalytic reaction was higher than that of homogeneous one.
Partial oxidation of methane has been conducted over $CeO_2$and it has been found that $CeO_2$has an extraordinary catalytic activity in the reaction. Its activity was strongly dependent on the $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio. Total combustion was dominant with stoichiometric feed ratio$(CH_4/O_2=$ 2.0) but partial oxidation was achieved between the $CH_4/O_2$ ration of 3.8 4.3 and the period depended upon the feed composition. The proposed raaction mechanism it that oxygen vacancies in raduced deria are supplied with oxygen molecules from the reactant, and then activate adsorbed oxygen, followed by releasing activated axygen species reacting with methane to produce $H_2$ and CO.

Pd catalyst have been used in hydrogenation, oxidation, and low temperature combustion reaction. Recently, it has been candidated as a possible reagents in the partial oxidation of methanol reformers of the fuel cell. Pd catalysts, even though it is very precious and expensive, catalytic functioning is good, but it still need to be improved in the matter of durability and low catalytic activity after calcination. In this study, we synthesize the improved Pd catalyst and study their chemical functioning.

Methanol and formaldehyde were produced directly by the partial oxidation of methane. The catalysts used were mixed oxides of late-transition metals, such as Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu. The reaction was carried out at $450^{\circ}C$, 50 bar in a fixed-bed differential reactor. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPD and BET apparatus. Of the catalysts, A-Mn0.2-6, which contains 0.2 mole of Mn and calcined at $600^{\circ}C$, showed the best catalytic activity: 3.7% methane conversion, and 30 and 28% methanol and formaldehyde selectivities, respectively. The catalytic activity was changed with the content of Mn and the calcination temperature. Catalytic activity increased with the specific surface areas of the catalysts. With XRD, it was found that the structure of the catalysts are changed with calcination temperature. Through $O_2-TPD$ experiment, it was found that the catalysts showing good catalytic activity showed $O_2$ desorption peak around $800^{\circ}C$.
Partial oxidation of methane was carried out by ceria-promoted Ni-substituted hydrotalcite-derived catalysts ($Ce_xNi_3$-HTlc ; x=$0.3{\sim}1.2$) in a fixed-bed reactor. The Ce/Ni ratio of 0.3/3 in the catalyst showed the best catalytic activity but the Ce/Ni ratio became higher above 0.3/3, the catalyst became less active in short-term tests. No ceria promoted catalyst was started to decrease $CH_4$ conversion after 20 h but the Ce/Ni ratio 0.3/3 catalyst was kept its stability in long-term tests.

The effects of La addition to Ni/$CeO_2$ methane partial oxidation catalysts were investigated. Catalysts were prepared by the impregnation and urea methods. In the preparation of catalysts, La content was changed from 1 wt% to 3wt%. Catalysts that contain 2wt% La showed the highest methane conversion of about 80% and CO selectivity of 84% and $H_2$ selectivity of 70%. This result may be stemmed from that, when La content is 2wt%, a fluorite oxide-type structure is well formed and carbon deposition is also decreased. Among the catalysts, 2.5wt% Ni/Ce(La)Ox showed the highest catalytic activity. From the experiment of changing reaction temperature with 2.5wt% Ni/Ce(La)Ox catalyst, it was found that the optimum reaction temperature is $750^{\circ}C$ and at this temperature methane conversion was about 90%, CO and $H_2$ selectivities were 94 and 80%, respectively.
$N_2O$ decomposition characteristics of dual bed mixed metal oxide catalytic system was investigated. The partial oxidation of methane at first reactor of dual bed catalytic system was performed over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst under the optimized condition of $8,000h^{-1}$ GHSV, gas ratio ($CH_4:O_2=5:1$) at $500^{\circ}C$. In the dual bed system investigated herein, the second catalyst bed was employed for the $N_2O$ decomposition using product of partial oxidation of methane at first bed. An excellent $N_2O$ conversion activity even at lower temperature ($<250^{\circ}C$) was obtained with Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) or Co-Rh-Zr-Al (1/0.2/0.3/1) catalyst by combining Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) hydrotalcite catalyst for the partial oxidation of methane in a dual-bed system. The $N_2O$ conversion activity is drastically reduced in the presence of oxygen in second bed of a dual-bed system over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst at $300^{\circ}C$.
In this study, ordered mesoporous silica-supported Ni catalysts were prepared for catalytic partial oxidation of methane (CPOM) by using electroless nickel plating method. Unlike conventionally impregnated catalysts, the electrolessly-plated nickel catalyst showed that nickel was highly dispersed and formed stably on silica-supported surface. It was verified by TEM-EDS analysis. During the activity tests, the electrolessly-plated nickel was barely sintered and the amount of carbon deposition was very small. Consequently, the catalyst was far less deactivated, while the sintering was significantly observed in the cases of the catalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method. Regarding the palladium-promoted catalysts, the reducibility of nickel was increased, and the reaction performances were enhanced in terms of CH4 conversion and H2/CO ratio of produced syngas.
As the single chamber SOFC(SC-SOFC) showed higher prospect on reducing the operation temperature as well as offering higher design flexibility of SOFCs, lots of concerns have been given to investigate the catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxide in mixed fuel and oxidant conditions. Hence we thoroughly investigated the catalytic property of various perovskite-type oxides such as $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3(LSM),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSC),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3(LSCF),\;Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3(SSC),\;and\;Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}(BSCF)$ under the partial oxidation condition of methane which used to be given for SC-SOFC operation. In this study, powder form of each perovskite oxides whose surface areas were controlled to be equal, were investigated as functions of methane to oxygen ratios and reactor temperature. XRD, BET and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline phase, surface area and microstructure of prepared powders before and after the catalytic oxidation. According to the gas phase analysis with flow-through type reactor and gas chromatography system, LSC, SSC, and LSCF showed higher catalytic activity at fairly lower temperature around $400^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ whereas LSM and BSCF could be activated at much higher temperature above $600^{\circ}C$.
