A TCO-less ruthenium (Ru) catalytic layer on glass substrate instead of conventional Ru/TCO/ glass substrate was assessed as counter electrode (CE) material in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by examining the effect of the Ru thickness on the DSSC performance. Ru films with different thicknesses (34, 46, 69, and 90 nm) were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on glass substrates to replace both existing catalyst and electrode layer. In order to make our comparison, we also prepared an Ru catalytic layer by a similar method on FTO/glass substrate. Finally, we prepared the $0.45cm^2$ DSSC device the properties of the DSSCs were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and current-voltage (I-V) method. CV measurements revealed an increase in catalytic activity with increasing film thickness. The charge transfer resistance at the interface between the electrolyte and Rudecreased with increasing Ru thickness. I-V results showed that the energy conversion efficiency increased up to 1.96%. Our results imply that TCO-less Ru/glass might perform as both catalyst and electrode layer when it is used in counter electrodes in DSSCs.

Nickel oxide was deposited on mesoporous silica by atomic layer deposition (ALD) consisting of sequential exposures to Ni(cp)2 and $H_2O$. NiO/silica samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The flow-type reactor was used to measure activity of NiO/silica catalyst for catalytic combustion of toluene. The activity of NiO/silica catalyst was evaluated in terms of toluene removal efficiency and selectivity to $CO_2$ and compared with those of bare nickel oxide nanoparticles. In order to investigate influence of reaction temperature on combustion aspect, the catalytic combustion experiments were carried out at various temperatures. We show that both bare and supported NiO can be efficient catalysts for total oxidation of toluene at a temperature as low as $250^{\circ}C$.

A ruthenium (Ru) catalytic layer and a conventional Pt layer were assessed as counter electrodes (CE) for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Ru films with different thicknesses of 34, 46, and 90 nm were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pt layers with the same thicknesses were prepared by sputtering. $0.45cm^2$ DSSCs were prepared and their properties were characterized by FE-SEM, cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and current-voltage (I-V). FE-SEM revealed that the crystallized Ru films and Pt films had been deposited quite conformally. CV showed that the catalytic activity of Pt was much greater than that of Ru. In addition, although the catalytic activity of Pt did not depend on the thickness, that of Ru showed an increase with increasing thickness. Impedance analysis revealed high charge transfer resistance at the Ru interface and a decrease with increasing Ru thickness, whereas Pt showed low resistance with no thickness dependence. Despite the relatively small catalytic activity of Ru, the I-V result revealed the average energy conversion efficiency of Ru and Pt to be 2.98% and 6.57%, respectively. These results suggest that Ru can be used as counter electrodes in DSSCs due to its extremely low temperature process compatibility.
A two-step fuel-rich/fuel-lean catalytic combustion seems to be one of the most effective methods to control simultaneously the NO generation and the hydrocarbon (HC) conversion from fuel-bound nitrogen. By controlling equivalent air ratio for maintaining fuel-rich and fuel-lean condition over each catalytic layer, space velocity, inlet temperature, and catalyst component, the HCand ammonia conversion efficiency higher than 95% could be achieved, with ammonia conversion to NO remaining below 5%. The experimental results wouldbe applied to the combustion of land fill gas and to gasified refuse-derived fuels as a method of minimizing NO generation.

Graphene, hexagonal network of carbon atoms forming a one-atom thick planar sheet, has been emerged as a fascinating material for future nanoelectronics. Huge attention has been captured by its extraordinary electronic properties, such as bipolar conductance, half integer quantum Hall effect at room temperature, ballistic transport over ${\sim}0.4{\mu}m$ length and extremely high carrier mobility at room temperature. Several approaches have been developed to produce graphene, such as micromechanical cleavage of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite using adhesive tape, chemical reduction of exfoliated graphite oxide, epitaxial growth of graphene on SiC and single crystalline metal substrate, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis. In particular, direct synthesis of graphene using metal catalytic substrate in CVD process provides a new way to large-scale production of graphene film for realization of graphene-based electronics. In this method, metal catalytic substrates including Ni and Cu have been used for CVD synthesis of graphene. There are two proposed mechanism of graphene synthesis: carbon diffusion and precipitation for graphene synthesized on Ni, and surface adsorption for graphene synthesized on Cu, namely, self-limiting growth mechanism, which can be divided by difference of carbon solubility of the metals. Here we present that large area, uniform, and layer controllable graphene synthesized on Cu catalytic substrate is achieved by acetylene-assisted CVD. The number of graphene layer can be simply controlled by adjusting acetylene injection time, verified by Raman spectroscopy. Structural features and full details of mechanism for the growth of layer controllable graphene on Cu were systematically explored by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy.
Structually organized mono- and multilayers were developed on gold for the catalytic and affinity biosensing using hyper-branched dendrimers. For the catalytic biosensing interface, a new approach to construct a multilayered enzyme film on the electrode surface was developed. The film was prepared by layer-by-layer depositions of dendrimers and periodate-oxidized glucose oxidase. The voltammograms obtained from the GOx/dendrimer multilayered electrodes revealed that bioelectrocatalytic response is directly correlated to the number of deposited bilayers. From the analysis of voltammetric and ellipsometric signals, the coverage of active enzyme per layer during the layering steps was estimated, demonstrating the spatially-ordered multilayer formation. As an extension of the study, dendrimers having various degrees of ferrocenyl modification were prepared and used. The resulting electrodes were electrochemically characterized, and the density of ferrocenyl groups, active enzyme coverage, and sensitivity were estimated. For the affinity-sensing surrface, a biosensor system based on avidin-biotin interaction was developed. As the building block of affinity monolayer, G4 dendrimer having partial ferrocenyl-tethered surface groups was prepared and used. And the biotinylated and electroactive dendritic monolayer was used for the affinity-sensing surface interacting with avidin. Electrochemical characterization of the resulting biosensor was conducted using free enzyme in electrolyte in terms of degree of surface coverage with avidin and subsequent surface shielding.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to deposit $TiO_2$ on Ni particles, and changes in the catalytic activity of Ni for $CO_2$ reforming of methane (CRM) were studied. In the presence of $TiO_2$ islands on Ni surfaces, the onset temperature of the CRM reaction was lower than that of bare Ni. During the CRM reaction, carbon was deposited on the surface, reducing the catalytic activity of the surface, but $TiO_2$ was able to remove the carbon deposits from the surface. When the Ni surface was completely covered with $TiO_2$, catalytic activity disappeared, indicating that tuning of $TiO_2$ coverage on Ni is important for maximizing the activity of the CRM reaction.

A TCO-less palladium (Pd) catalytic layer on the glass substrate was assessed as the counter electrode (CE) in a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) to confirm the stability of Pd with the $I^-/I_3{^-}$electrolyte on the DSSC performance. A 90nm-thick Pd film was deposited by a thermal evaporator. Finally, DSSC devices of $0.45cm^2$ with glass/FTO/blocking layer/$TiO_2$/dye/electrolyte(10 mM LiI + 1 mM $I_2$ + 0.1 M $LiClO_4$ in acetonitrile solution)/Pd/glass structure was prepared. We investigated the microstructure and photovoltaic property at 1 and 12 hours after the sample preparation. The optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), cyclic voltammetry measurement (C-V), and current voltage (I-V) were employed to measure the microstructure and photovoltaic property evolution. Microstructure analysis showed that the corrosion by reaction between the Pd layer and the electrolyte occurred as time went by, which led the decrease of the catalytic activity and the efficiency. I-V result revealed that the energy conversion efficiency after 1 and 12 hours was 0.34% and 0.15%, respectively. Our results implied that we might employ the other non-$I^-/I_3{^-}$electrolyte or the other catalytic metal layers to guarantee the long term stability of the DSSC devices.
It is shown that the maximum value of exchange current is obtained where hydrogen adsorption energy is near 0. This enables to estimate catalytic efficiency of a material with hydrogen adsorption energy, which is relatively easier to calculate with density fuctional theory (DFT) method. Strain dependence of the adsorption energy was studied with DFT method and adsorption energy of 0.04 eV per hydrogen atom is obtained at 30% strain.
In the present study, catalytic combustion of hydrogen-air premixture in a millimeter scale monolith coated with Pt catalyst was investigated. As the combustor size decreases, the heat loss increases in proportion with the inverse of the scale of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency decreases in a conventional type of combustor. Combustion reaction assisted by catalyst can reduce the heat loss by decreasing the reaction temperature at which catalytic conversion takes place. Another advantage of catalytic combustion is that ignition is not required. Platinum was coated by incipient wetness method on a millimeter scale monolith with cell size of $1{\times}1mm$. Using this monolith as the core of the reaction chamber, temperatures were recorded at various locations along the flow direction. Burnt gas was passed to a gas chromatography system to measure the hydrogen content after the reaction. The measurements were made at various volume flow rate of the fuel-air premixture. The gas chromatography results showed the reaction was complete at all the test conditions and the reacting species penetrated the laminar boundary layer at the honeycomb and made contact with the catalyst coated surface. At all the measuring locations, the record showed monotonous increase of temperature during the measurement duration. And the temperature profile showed that the peak temperature is reached at the point nearest to the gas inlet and decreasing temperature along the flow direction.
