  • The aim of this study is to investigate advantages that the catalytically supported combustor can have. For this purpose, the catalytic combustor was prepared which consisted of the catalyst bed and the thermal combustor at the downstream of the catalyst bed. The catalyst bed consisted of two-stage. Pd catalyst was installed in the first stage of the catalyst bed, and Pt catalyst was placed in the second stage. Results showed that the catalytically supported combustion had some advantages. One was that auto-ignition occurred in the thermal combustor. This can give merit that an igniter is not necessary to start flame ignition. Other was that the catalytically supported combustion was stable for lean mixture. When combustion of lean mixture was not supported by surface reaction it became unstable so that big combustion noise was created. Therefore, it is desirable to support flame by catalytic surface reaction to obtain the stable combustion of lean mixture.

  • The Kyoto Protocol, that had been in force from February 16, 2005, requires significant reduction in $CO_2$ emissions for all anthropogenic sources containing transportation, industrial, commercial, and residential fields, etc, and automotive emission standards for air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides $(NO_x)$ become more and more tight for improving ambient air quality. This paper has briefly reviewed homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion technology offering dramatic reduction in $CO_2,\;NO_x$ and PM emissions, compared to conventional gasoline and diesel engine vehicles, in an effort of automotive industries and their related academic activities to comply with future fuel economy legislation, e.g., $CO_2$ emission standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) in the respective European Union (EU) and United States of America (USA), and to meet very stringent future automotive emission standards, e.g., Tier 2 program in USA and EURO V in EU. In addition, major challenges to the widespread use of HCCI engines in road applications are discussed in aspects of new catalytic emissions controls to remove high CO and unburned hydrocarbons from such engine-equipped vehicles.

  • Catalytic ignition of $H_2/O_2/CO_2$ mixtures over platinum catalyst is experimentally investigated by using microcalorimetry. For comparison, $N_2$ and Ar is also used as diluent gas. The gas mixture flows toward platinum foil heated by electric current at atmosphere pressure and ambient temperature. The ignition temperature range 350-445K according to the fuel ratio, dilution ratio and diluent gas. It increases as the fuel ratio and dilution ratio increase. $H_2/O_2$ mixture with $CO_2$ ignites at higher temperature than with other diluents by 30-50K. Several experimental evidences show the inhibition effects of $CO_2$ in $H_2-O_2$ heterogeneous reaction is considerable

시동 배기가스 점화기술을 이용한 촉매의 예열시간 단축 (Fast Light-Off of Catalyst using Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition)

  • In order to satisfy the ULEV emissions regulation, fast light-off of a catalyst is essential for reduction of HC and CO emissions during the cold start. Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition(CEGI) method developed in this study showed that the catalyst reaches the light-off temperature in a few seconds. The CEGI stops the ignition signal for a few seconds during the cranking period, so the unburned fuel-air mixture bypasses the combustion chamber and flows through the exhaust manifold. When the unburned mixture reaches two glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst, it burns and releases the thermal energy to heat up the catalyst, In the FTP-75 vehicle tests, the CEGI showed that the exhaust emissions reduced by 47.7% for THC and by 88.6% for CO in the cold-transient phase of the test.

  • 고농도 과산화수소를 산화제로 이용하는 하이브리드 로켓의 자연 점화 연구를 수행하였다. 별도의 점화기 없이 촉매 반응을 통한 과산화수소 분해가스를 파라핀 및 폴리에틸렌에 분사함으로서 점화를 하였고 연속적인 재점화 및 즉각적인 점화 특성을 확인하였다. 안정적인 연소를 위해 파라핀은 PE에 비해 높은 연소실 특성길이가 요구된 반면, 펄스 응답특성은 점화지연 13 ms, 상승시간 30 ms 로서 폴리에틸렌의 응답성에 비해 두 배 가량 빠른 특성을 보였다.

  • 능금산법으로 제조된 페롭스카이트 촉매에서 입자상물질의 연소반응에 대하여 연구하였다. 페롭스카이트 산화물의 A 및 B site에 금속이온을 치환시켜 연소반응의 활성을 증가시켰다. 또한 반응온도, 산소의 농도, 공간속도, $SO_2$ 및 물의 영향에 대하여 조사하였다. $LaCoO_3$형 촉매의 A site에 알칼리족 금속을 치환시키면 연소개시 온도가 낮아졌고, 알카리족 금속은 Cs>K>Na의 순서로 연소활성을 증가시켰다. 그러나 $La_{0.6}Cs_{0.4}CoO_3 $촉매에서 B site에 Fe나 Mn을 치환시키더라도 연소개시 온도의 변화가 거의 없었다. 산소의 농도가 증가함에 따라 연소개시 온도는 낮아졌고 이산화탄소의 생성속도는 산소분압의 영향을 별로 받지 않았다. 한편 공간속도의 증가에 따라 연소개시온도가 낮아졌고, 이산화황에 대한 촉매의 비활성화는 일어나지 않았으며, 반응물 중에 첨가된 물에 의해 연소반응이 촉진되었다.

  • The two stroke spark ignition engine is the greatest contributor of the total vehicular pollution in a country like India. It is therefore an item that requires great attention in order to reduce fuel consumption and its concomitant pollution. The use of strong magnetic charge in the fuel line gives a complete and clean burn so that power is increased while operating expenses are reduced. The magnetic flux on the fuel line dramatically reduces harmful exhaust emissions while increasing mileage, thereby saving money and improving engine performance. It increases combustion efficiency and provides higher-octane performance. The experimental results show that the magnetic flux on fuel reduces the carbon monoxide emission up to 13% in a base engine, 23% in a copper-coated engine and 29% in a zirconia-coated engine.

  • In the present study, catalytic combustion of hydrogen-air premixture in a millimeter scale monolith coated with Pt catalyst was investigated. As the combustor size decreases, the heat loss increases in proportion with the inverse of the scale of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency decreases in a conventional type of combustor. Combustion reaction assisted by catalyst can reduce the heat loss by decreasing the reaction temperature at which catalytic conversion takes place. Another advantage of catalytic combustion is that ignition is not required. Platinum was coated by incipient wetness method on a millimeter scale monolith with cell size of $1{\times}1mm$. Using this monolith as the core of the reaction chamber, temperatures were recorded at various locations along the flow direction. Burnt gas was passed to a gas chromatography system to measure the hydrogen content after the reaction. The measurements were made at various volume flow rate of the fuel-air premixture. The gas chromatography results showed the reaction was complete at all the test conditions and the reacting species penetrated the laminar boundary layer at the honeycomb and made contact with the catalyst coated surface. At all the measuring locations, the record showed monotonous increase of temperature during the measurement duration. And the temperature profile showed that the peak temperature is reached at the point nearest to the gas inlet and decreasing temperature along the flow direction.

  • 고온/고압/산화제 과잉 환경에 노출되는 금속들은 급격한 산화(발화 및 연소)가 일어날 수 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 고온/고압/산화제 과잉 환경에 적합한 금속 재질의 선정을 위해 수행되었다. 고온, 고압, 산화제 과잉 분위기를 만들기 위해서 과산화수소의 촉매반응 활용한 시험 설비를 구축하고 STS 계열 금속 재질에 대한 금속 산화 및 발화에 대한 평가를 진행하였다. 그 결과, 선정된 재질의 변형(변색) 및 표면 거칠기에 변화가 관찰되었지만, 시편의 무게 및 두께에 대한 변화는 크지 않음을 확인하였다.
