The NO oxidation process has been applied to improve a removal efficiency of NO included in exhaust gas. In this study, to produce a dry oxidant for the NO oxidation process, the catalytic H2O2 decomposition method was proposed. A variety of the heterogeneous solid-acidic Mn-based catalysts were prepared for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition and the effect of their physico-chemical properties on the catalytic H2O2 decomposition were investigated. The results of this study showed that the acidic sites of the Mn-based catalysts has an influence on the catalytic H2O2 decomposition. The Mn-based catalyst having the abundant acidic sites within the wide temperature range in NH3-TPD shows the best performance for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition. Therefore, the NO oxidation efficiency, using the dry oxidant produced by the H2O2 decomposition over the Mn-based catalyst having the abundant acidic properties under the wide temperature range, was higher than the others. As a remarkable result, the best performances in the catalytic H2O2 decomposition and NO oxidation was shown when the Mn-based Fe2O3 support catalyst containing K component was used for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition.

Sulfur-Iodine (SI) cycle, which thermochemically splits water to hydrogen and oxygen through three stages of Bunsen reaction, HI decomposition, and $H_2SO_4$ decomposition, seems a promising process to produce hydrogen massively. Among them, the decomposition of $H_2SO_4$ ($H_2SO_4=H_2O+SO_2+1/2O_2$) requires high temperature heat over $800^{\circ}C$ such as the heat from concentrated solar energy or a very high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor. Because of harsh reaction conditions of high temperature and pressure with extremely corrosive reactants and products, there have been scarce and limited number of data reported on the pressurized $H_2SO_4$ decomposition. This work focuses whether the $H_2SO_4$ decomposition can occur at high pressure in a noble-metal reactor, which possibly resists corrosive acidic chemicals and possesses catalytic activity for the reaction. Decomposition reactions were conducted in a Pt-lined tubular reactor without any other catalytic species at conditions of $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$ and 0 bar (ambient pressure) to 10 bar with 95 wt% $H_2SO_4$. The Pt-lined reactor was found to endure the corrosive pressurized condition, and its inner surface successfully carried out a catalytic role in decomposing $H_2SO_4$ to $SO_2$ and $O_2$. This preliminary result has proposed the availability of noble metal-lined reactors for the high temperature, high pressure sulfuric acid decomposition.
CNTs have been synthesized by catalytic $C_2H_2$ decomposition through $Pd/Al_2O_3$ at low temperature. The CNTs were grown to a length of about 10 ${\mu}$m and diameter 150-200 nm with multiwalled structure. Pd catalysts have two major roles; one is the active catalyst for $C_2H_2$ decomposition, the other is a nucleation site of CNT's growth.
In this study, the catalytic activity of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was investigated for the decomposition of $NF_3$. Reactions for $NF_3$ decomposition were carried out in the range of reaction temperature of $330{\sim}730^{\circ}C$ and GHSV of $3,000{\sim}15,000mL/g-cat{\cdot}h$ in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor system. Thermal decomposition of $NF_3$ was also performed in order to compare with the catalytic decomposition of $NF_3$. The conversion of $NF_3$ by the catalytic decomposition at $400^{\circ}C$ was four times higher than that of the thermal decomposition. It was confirmed that the reaction behavior of $NF_3$ over ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ exhibited two reaction pathways in the presence of steam. Fluorine in $NF_3$ over ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was chemically absorbed to $AlF_3$ by the gas-solid reaction in the absence of steam. The catalytic decomposition of $NF_3$ occurred by hydrolysis with steam. It was also confirmed by FT-IR analysis that $NF_3$ was completely decomposed to NOx and HF above $500^{\circ}C$.
Thermolysis of $Cu(NO_3)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ impregnated activated carbon fiber (ACF) was studied by means of XRD analysis to obtain Cu-impregnated ACF. $Cu(NO_3)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ was converted into $Cu_2O$ around $230^{\circ}C$. The $Cu_2O$ was reduced to Cu at $400^{\circ}C$, resulting in ACF-C(Cu). Some Cu particles have a tendency to aggregate through the heat treatment, resulting in the ununiform distribution in ACF. Catalytic decomposition of NO gas has been performed by Cu-impregnated ACF in a column reactor at $400^{\circ}C$. Initial NO concentration was 1300 ppm diluted in helium gas. NO gas was effectively decomposed by 5~10 wt% Cu-impregnated ACF at $400^{\circ}C$. The concentration of NO was maintained less than 200 ppm for 6 hours in this system. The ACF-C(Cu) deoxidized NO to $N_2$ and was reduced to ACF-$C(Cu_2O)$ in the initial stage. The ACF-$C(Cu_2O)$ also deoxidized NO to $N_2$ and reduced to ACF-C(CuO). This ACF-C(CuO) was converted again into ACF-C(Cu) by heating. There was no consumption of ACF in mass during thermolysis and catalytic decomposition of NO to $N_2$ by copper. The catalytic decomposition was accelerated with increase of the reaction temperature.
$SF_6$, which has a high global warming potential, can be decomposed to sulfur and fluorine compounds through hydrolysis by $H_2O$ or oxidation by $O_2$ over solid acid catalysts. In this study ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was employed as the solid acid catalyst for the abatement of $SF_6$ and its catalytic activity was investigated with respect to the reaction temperature and the space velocity. The catalytic activity for $SF_6$ decomposition by the hydrolysis reached the maximum at and above 973 K with the space velocity of $20,000\;ml/g_{-cat}{\cdot}h$, exhibiting a conversion very close to 100%. When the space velocity was lower than $45,000\;ml/g_{-cat}{\cdot}h$, the conversion was maintained at the maximum value. On the other hand, the conversion of $SF_6$ by the oxidation was about 20% under the same conditions. The SEM and XRD analyses revealed that the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was transformed to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ during the hydrolysis and to $AlF_3$ during the oxidation, respectively. The size of $AlF_3$ after the oxidation was over $20\;{\mu}m$, and its catalytic activity was low due to the low surface area. Therefore, it was concluded that the hydrolysis over ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was much more favorable than the oxidation for the catalytic decomposition of $SF_6$.
Direct catalytic decomposition is a promising method for controlling the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the semiconductor and display industries. In this study, a γ-Al2O3 catalyst was developed to reduce N2O emissions by a catalytic decomposition reaction. The γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by an extrusion method using boehmite powder, and a N2O decomposition test was performed using a catalyst reactor that was approximately 25.4 mm (1 in) in diameter packed with approximately 5 mm of catalysts. The N2O decomposition tests were carried out with approximately 1% N2O at 550 to 750 ℃, an ambient pressure, and a GHSV=1800-2000 h-1. To confirm the N2O decomposition properties and the effect of O2 and steam on the N2O decomposition, nitrogen, air, and air and steam were used as atmospheric gases. The catalytic decomposition tests showed that the 1% N2O had almost completely disappeared at 700 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere. However, air and steam decreased the conversion rate drastically. The long term stability test carried out under an N2 atmosphere at 700 ℃ for 350 h showed that the N2O conversion rate remained very stable, confirming no catalytic activity changes. From the results of the N2O decomposition tests and long-term stability test, it is expected that the prepared γ-Al2O3 catalyst can be used to reduce N2O emissions from several industries including the semiconductor, display, and nitric acid manufacturing industry.
We prepared the cylindrical $\gamma-alumina$ pellets of 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in average length using amorphous alumina and pore generating agent. The pellets were immersed in an aqueous solution of the mixture of $Fe(NO_{3})_{3}{\cdot}9H_{2}O$ and $CH_{3}COOH$. They were then hydrothermally treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in autoclave, dried and calcined. For the application as an environmental catalyst, we investigated the decomposition characteristics of aniline and the initiation characteristics of $OH^{\cdot}$ conversion action in $O_{3}$ environment with or without the $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ supported y-alumina catalyst and $O_{3}$ molecule.
Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is sulfaamide-based synthetic antibiotics, which are widely prescribed pharmaceutical compound to treat bacterial infections in both human and animals. Most of them are not completely decomposed as refractory substances. The environmental impact of pharmaceuticals as emerging contaminants has generated severe concerns. In this study, catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of SMX was carried out with $Cu/Al_2O_3$ catalyst and investigated the optimum reaction conditions of temperature, dosage of catalyst and concentration of $H_2O_2$ to completely decompose the SMX. It was observed that SMX was completely decomposed within 20 min using 0.79 mM $H_2O_2$ and 6 g $Cu/Al_2O_3$ catalyst at 1 atm and $40^{\circ}C$, but SMX was not fully mineralized and converted to intermediates as hydroylated-SMX, sulfanilic acid, 4-aminobenzenesulfinic acid and nitrobenzene. After that these are completely mineralized through organic acid. We proposed the decomposition reaction path ways of SMX by analyzing the behavior of these intermediates. To investigate the durability of heterogeneous catalyst, decomposition of SMX was observed by continuously recycling catalysts. When the heterogeneous catalyst of 10 wt% $Cu/Al_2O_3$ was continuously reused 5 times, decomposition of SMX was a little lowered, but the activity of catalyst was overall very stable.

Understanding the mechanistic details of heterogeneous catalytic reactions will provide a way to tune the selectivity between various competing reaction channels. In this regard, catalytic decomposition of alcohols over the rutile $TiO_2$(110) surface as a model oxide catalyst has been studied to understand the reaction mechanism employing the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The $TiO_2$(110) model catalyst is found to be active toward alcohol dehydration. We find that the active sites are bridge-bonded oxygen vacancies where RO-H heterolytically dissociates and binds to the vacancy to produce alkoxy (RO-) and hydroxyl (HO-). Two protons adsorbed onto the bridge-bonded oxygen atoms (-OH) readily react with each other to form a water molecule at ~500 K and desorb from the surface. The alkoxy (RO-) undergoes decomposition at higher temperatures into the corresponding alkene. Here, the overall desorption kinetics is limited by a first-order decomposition of intermediate alkoxy (RO-) species bound to the vacancy. We show that detailed analysis on the yield and the desorption temperatures as a function of the alkyl substituents provides valuable insights into the reaction mechanism. After the catalytic role of the oxygen vacancies has been established, we employed x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to further study the surface electronic structure related to the catalytically active defective sites. The defect-related state in valence band has been related to the chemically reduced $Ti^{3+}$ defects near the surface region and are found to be closely related to the catalytic activity of the $TiO_2$(110) surface.
