Ni-Ti alloy has excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, shape memory effect and superelasticity, so it has been used widely in biomedical fields. But it has difficulty in casting due to its high melting temperature and oxygen affinity at high temperature. Recently it has been attempted to cast Ni-Ti alloy using new casting machine and investment. The purpose of this study was to examine the superelastic behavior of cast shape memory Ni-Ti alloy and to compare the mechanical properties of the cast shape memory alloy with those of commercial alloys for removable partial denture framework. Ni-Ti alloy(Ni 50.25%, Ti 49.75% : atomic ratio) was cast with dental argon-arc pressure casting machine and Type IV gold alloy, Co-Cr alloy, Ni-Cr alloy, pure titanium were cast as reference. Experimental cast Ni-Ti alloy was treated with heat($500{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) in muffle furnace for 1 hour. Transformation temperature range of cast Ni-Ti alloy was measured with differential scanning calorimetry. The superelastic behavior and mechanical properties of cat Ni-Ti alloy were observed and evaluated by three point bending test, ultimate tensile test, Vickers microhardness test and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Cast Ni-Ti alloy(Ni 50.25%, Ti 49.75% : atomic ratio) was found to have superelastic behavior. 2. Stiffness of cast Ni-Ti alloy was considerably lesser than that of commercial alloys for removable partial denture. 3. Permanent deformation was observed in commercial alloys for removable partial denture framework at three point bending test over proportional limit(1.5mm deflection), but was not nearly observed in cast Ni-Ti alloy. 4. On the mechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength, elongation and Vickers microhardness number, cast Ni-Ti alloy was similiar to Type IV gold alloy, Co-Cr alloy, Ni-Cr alloy and pure titanium. With these results, cast Ni-Ti alloy had superelastic behavior and low stiffness. Therefore, it is suggested that cast Ni-Ti alloy may be applicated to base metal alloy for removable partial denture framework.
The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution in the ignition-proof Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy produced by the semisolid squeeze casting are clarified and the mechanical properties are also compared with those of squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy. The tensile strength and elongation increase slightly as the solid fraction depending on temperature decreases, while the 0.2% proof stress decreases. The size of primary crystal increases with increasing holding time. The tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress of the semi-solid squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy decrease as the size of primary crystal increases, indicating the dependence of strength on the size of primary crystal. The elongation of the semi-solid squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy is two times as large as the squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy and the tensile strength is unchanged despite the growth of primary crystal, resulting from the refining of the melted ${\alpha}Mg$ phase and the brittle eutectic compound as well as the reduction of solidification shrinkage and porosities.

The low-cycle fatigue behaviors of cast AI-Si alloy and composite with reinforcement of SIC particles were compared with those of extruded unreinforced matrix alloy and composite in order to investigate the influence of cast and extrusion processes on the cyclic deformation and fatigue life. Generally, both cast and extruded composites including the unreinforced alloy exhibited cyclic hardening behaviour, with more pronounced strain-hardening for the composites with a higher volume fraction of the SiC particles. However, cast composite under a low applied cyclic strain showing no observable plastic strain exhibited cyclic softening behavior due to the cast porosities. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the cast composite were found to be quite comparable to those of the extruded composite, however, the extrusion process considerably improved the ductility and fracture strength of the composite by effectively eliminating the cast porosities. Low-cycle fatigue lives of the cast alloy and composite were shorter than those of the extruded counterparts. Large difference in life between cast and extruded composites was attributed to the higher influence of the cast porosities on the fatigue life of the composite than that of the unreinforced alloy material. A fatigue damage parameter using strain energy density effectively represented the inferior life in the low-cycle regime and superior life in the high-cycle regime for the composite, compared to the unreinforced alloy.
Three different multi-component white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their as-cast and solidification structures. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides and matrix structures : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No.1), 3%C-10%V-5% Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2) and 3%C-17%Cr-3% V(alloy No.3). The as-cast microstructures were investigated with optical and scanning electron microscopes. There existed two different types of carbides, $M_7C_3$ carbide with rod-like morphology and $M_6C$ carbide with fishbone-like one, and matrix in the alloy No. 1. The alloy No. 2 consisted of MC carbide with chunky and flaky type and needle-like $M_2C$ carbide, and matrix. The chunky type referred to primary MC carbide and the flaky one to eutectic MC carbide. The morphology of the alloy No. 3 represented a typical hypo-eutectic high chromium white cast iron composed of rod-like $M_7C_3$ carbide which is very sensitive to heat flow direction and matrix. To clarify the solidification sequence, each iron(50g) was remelted at 1723K in an alumina crucible using a silicon carbide resistance furnace under argon atmosphere. The molten iron was cooled at the rate of 10K/min and quenched into water at several temperatures during thermal analysis. The solidification structures of the specimen were found to consist of austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_6C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 1, proeutectic MC, austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), (${\gamma}$+MC) eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_2C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 2, and proeutectic $M_7C_3$ and $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic in the alloy No 3. respectively.
The aging characteristics of gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy were investigated and compared to those of cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1wt.% Zn alloy powders had spherical morphology between 1 and 100 $\mu m$ in diameter. After compaction under the pressure of 700 MPa at $320^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed a grain size of approximately 40 $\mu m$ which is smaller than that of the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy, and a relative compact density of approximately 93%. After ageing, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed much faster peak hardness than cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed the new fine precipitations with ageing time, while the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy was almost similar morphology.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the microstructural characteristics and hardness distribution of AZ91 magnesium alloy furnace-cooled to room temperature after solution treatment, and to compare the results with those of as-cast condition. The as-cast alloy showed a partially divorced eutectic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase and discontinuous precipitates (DPs) with a lamellar morphology, while only DPs were observed in the furnace-cooled alloy. The DPs in the furnace-cooled AZ91 alloy had various apparent interlamellar spacings, which would be ascribed to the different transformation temperatures during the furnace cooling. The average hardness for the furnace-cooled alloy is similar to that for the as-cast alloy. It is interesting to note that the hardness values of the furnace-cooled alloy were distributed over a narrower range than those of the as-cast alloy. This is likely to be caused by the relatively more homogeneous microstructure of the furnace-cooled alloy in comparison with the ascast one.

Wear behaviors of gas atomized and extruded Al-Si alloys were investigated using the dry sliding wear apparatus. The wear tests were conducted on Al-Si alloy discs against cast iron pins and vice versa at constant load of 10N with different sliding speed of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5m/s. In the case of Al-Si alloy discs slid against the cast iron pins, the wear rate slightly increased with increasing the sliding speed due to the abrasive wear occurred between Al-Si alloy discs and cast iron pins. Conversely, in the case of cast iron discs against Al-Si alloy pins, the wear rate decreased with increasing the sliding speed up to 0.3m/s. However, the wear rate increased with increasing the sliding speed from 0.3m/s to 0.5m/s. It could be due to adhesive wear behavior and abrasive wear behavior_between cast iron discs and Al-Si alloy pins.
Recently, automotive industry is attempting to replace steels for automotive parts with light-weight alloys such as aluminum alloy, because of the growing environmental regulations governing exhaust gas and the engine effectiveness of a vehicle. The low cycle fatigue (LCF) and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties as well as the microstructure and tensile property were investigated on the low pressure cast A356 aluminum alloy wheel, which was followed by T6 heat treatment. The cast microstructure of the alloy influenced significantly on the low cycle and high cycle fatigue behaviors. The rim part of cast aluminum alloy wheel showed higher low cycle and high cycle fatigue strength compared with the spoke part, which should be caused by higher cooling rate of rim part. The spoke part of the wheel showed coarser dendrite arm spacing (DAS) and wide eutectic zone in the microstructure, which resulted in the partial brittle fracture and lower fatigue life time.
The typical microstructure of Al-5%Mg-2%Zn cast alloy mainly consists of an aluminum matrix with a small amount of AlMgZn 2nd phase. The secondary dendrite arm spacing and the grain size of the cast alloy tend to be inversely proportional to the section thickness of casting; however, the tensile properties cannot be said to be clearly related to the cast microstructure. After T6 heat treatment, the tensile strength of the alloy was enhanced significantly. TEM analysis results show that very fine AlMgZn precipitates were formed after the heat treatment. The corrosion resistance, measured according to the corrosion potential, was found to increase slightly after the conducting of heat treatment.
Effect of Sn addition on the fatigue properties of Al-Cu-Mn cast alloy was investigated by low and high cycle fatigue tests. Fatigue life showed the maximum value of 5450cycles in the Al-Cu-Mn alloy containing 0.10%Sn, but decreased rapidly beyond 0.20% of Sn additions. It was found that the fatigue strength was 132MPa and fatigue ratio was 0.31 in the alloy containing 0.10%Sn. Metallographic observation revealed that the fatigue crack initiated at the surface and propagated along the grain boundary. This propagation path was attributed to the presence of PFZ along the grain boundary. The tensile strength increased from 330MPa in 7he Sn-free Al-Cu-Mn cast alloy to 429MPa in the alloy containing 0.10%Sn. But above 0.20%Sn additions, tensile strength was decreased by the segregation of Sn.
