  • The study has been carried out under various experimental conditions to investigate mechanical properties by the transformation conditions of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron. The amount of retained austenite and bainite after quenching was determined by the X-ray diffractometer and the point counting method and which the microstructure was investigated by the S.E.M. The mechanical properties of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron can be varried over a comparatively wide range by changing the transformation conditions. During isothermal transformation of austenite in the bainite region, low-alloy ductile cast iron austempered at holding time of 40 minute has the maximum volume fraction(24%) of retained austenite in the cast iron matrix and which optimum values of mechanical properties correspond to the maximum amount of retained austenite, which falls with decreasing transformation temperature. The low values of both tensile strength and elongation in the initial stage of bainite transformation can be explained by premature fracture of tensile specimens and the tensile strength, hardness and elongation do not change considerably after a certain period. With a decreasing transformation temperature the tensile strength increase while the elongation decrease, especially the elongation has the maximum value at temperature $370^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of bonding condition on tensile properties of joints diffusion bonded spheroidal graphite cast iron, FCD60 to Cr-Mo steel, SCM 440 was investigated. Diffusion bonding was performed with various temperatures, holding times, pressures and atmospheres. All tensile specimens were fractured at the bonding interface. The tensile strength and elongation was increased with increasing bonding temperature. Especially, tensile strength of joints bonded at 1123K was higher than that of a raw material, FCD60, and tensile strength of joints bonded at 1173K was equal to that of a raw material, SCM440, but elongation of all joints was lower than those of raw materials. There was little the effect of holding time on the tensile properties. In comparison with bonding atmosphere, the difference of tensile strength was not observed, but elongation of joint bonded at vacuum(6.7mPa and 67mPa) was higher than that of Ar gas. Higher the degee of vacuum, elongation increased. Tensile properties of diffusion bonds depended on microstructures of cast iron at the interface and void ratio. Microstructures of cast iron at interface changed with temperature, because decarburizing and interdiffusion at the interface occurs and transformation of austenite-1 ferrite + graphite occurs on the cooling process. The void ratio decreased with increasing temperature, especially, effected on the elongation.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a low Ni austenitic cast iron through replacing Ni by Cu and Mn because they are cheaper than Ni. The effect of the Cu content (6-12 wt%) on the microstructure characteristics was investigated in Fe-3%C-16%(Ni+Cu+Mn) cast iron. Contrary to general effect of the Cu on cast iron, the result of the microstructure analysis indicated that bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content (>8 wt%Cu). A crystallized Cu-solution (Cu-Mn) phase and MnS in the Cu-solution were formed. The quantity of those phases increased as the Cu content increased. Consequently, the high Cu content in the composition ratio (Ni+Cu+Mn=16%) caused the formation of Cu-Mn/MnS and those phases decreased the effect of Cu and Mn on austenite formation. For this reason, bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content.

  • The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of hammer peening on the redistribution of residual stress at the repair weldment of cast iron using FEA. The FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. The maximum residual stress at the repair weldment of cast iron sharply decreases by hammer peening. The effect of hammer peening on the residual stress increases with a decrease of working temperature of hammer peeing.

  • The cast iron cylinder liner of the marine engine must be scrapped after its inner surface was definitely worn out due to the friction between the surface and piston ring during the operating. In this research, the restoring method of the worn out cast iron cylinder liner are discussed based on the results of experimental work of the thermal plastic deformation technique.

  • In determining properties of ductile cast iron, it is well known that nodularity plays a significant role. Therefore, the national and/or international standards for ductile cast iron such as KS, ISO, ASTM and JIS have specified some methods for evaluating it. However, most of standards have not recommended the methods using image analyzer which is known as an objective analyzing tool for evaluating microstructure. In this study, a reliable method for evaluating nodularity by image analyzing method was proposed, and the result was compared with that from the common counting method proposed in KS D 4302-1999. It was found that there was a reasonable relationship in nodularities measured by these two methods.

  • The effect of microstructure of gray cast iron disk was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Three different rotors with different microstructures were studied in this work. They showed a pearlitic matrix, a ferritic matrix, and a martensitic structure, respectively. All of them have graphite flakes in common. Drag tests at different pressure and speed conditions were carried out to study friction stability, temperature rise during drags. The rotor containing pearlitic matrix showed lower values of friction coefficient, small amount of temperature rise, and less fading. The results showed that gray cast iron disk containing pearlitic matrix has good friction characteristics.

  • The purpose of this research is to improve the surface roughness of cast-iron pipe porduced by the centrifugal casting. A twin-fluid atomizer of mold-wash slurry is designed for this project. New atomizer is equipped with the existing manufacturing facility to produce pipes. Cast-iron pipes (.cent.125*L3000mm) are produced and the surface roughnesses of those are analysed by UBM. The average surface roughness of new products is 6.7.mu.m while the old products of sand-resin coating method have 17.0.mu.m of average surface roughness. The surface roughness of cast-iron pipe is improved very much than before.

  • In this paper, the stress analysis of the cast iron insert of spent nuclear fuel disposal canister in a deep repository at 500m underground is done for the underground pressure variation. Since the nuclear fuel disposal usually emits much heat and radiation, its careful treatment is required. And so a long term safe repository at a deep bedrock is used. Under this situation, the canister experiences some mechanical external loads such as hydrostatic pressue of underground water, swelling pressure of bentonite, sudden rock movement etc.. Hence, the canister should be designed to withstand these loads. The cast iron insert of the canister mainly supports these loads. Therefore, the stress analysis of the cast iron insert is done to determine the design variables such as the diameter versus length of canister and the number and array type of inner baskets in this paper, The linear static structural analysis is done using the finite element analysis method. And the finite element analysis code, NISA, is used for the computation.
