  • Behavior of dynamic/static recrystallization during hot deformation of Cast alloy 718 was investigated. For this purpose, hot compression test and FE-simulation were conducted via Thermecmaster-Z and DEFORM-3D, respectively. The microstructural evolution during hot compression and post heat-treatment was investigated and deformation mechanism were analyzed by stress-strain curve, FE-simulation and microstructure. FE-simulation results show that the temperature difference between top-die and billet has considerable influence on the final shape of compressed specimen. The relation between applied load and processing time was predicted by the FE-simulation.

  • The effect of various types of heat-treatment on the mechanical properties of cast Alloy 718 has been investigated. Cast Alloy 718 bars were subjected to 'standard heat-treatment'_(SHT), 'HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) heat-treatment'_(HHT), and 'HIP-simulated heat-treatment'_(HS). In the absence of long time high temperature heat-treatment, a small amount of Laves phase remained in the 'SHT' specimen, and needle shaped ${\delta}$ precipitated in the vicinity of the Laves phase. Due to the formation of the Laves and ${\delta}$ phases in the 'SHT' specimen, it exhibited lower tensile properties than those of the others_specimens. On the other hand, the Laves phase was completely dissolved into the matrix after 'HHT' and 'HS' treatments. It is known that isostatic pressure reduces the self-diffusion coefficient, because of the lower self-diffusivity under HIP conditions in the interdendritic region, Nb segregation and the high amount of ${\gamma}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ precipitation that occurs. Due to the higher fraction of coarse ${\gamma}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ phases, the 'HHT' treated Alloy 718 showed excellent tensile strength.

  • The silicon nitride based ceramic cutting tool materials have been fabricated by gas pressure sintering (GPS) or hot pressing (HP). Their mechanical properties were measured and the effect of the fabrication variables on the properties were examined. Also, effect of adding TiN or TiC particulates on the mechanical properties of the silicon nitride ceramics were investigated. Ceramic cutting tools (ISO 120408) were made of the sintered bodies. Cutting performance test were performed on either conventional or NC lathe. The workpieces were grey cast iron, hardened alloy steel (AISI 4140, HRc>60) and Ni-based superalloy (Inconel 718). The results showed that fabrication variables, namely, sintering temperature and time, exerted a strong influence on the microstincture and mechanical properties of the sintered body, which, however, did not make much difference in wear resistance of the tools. High hardness of the tool containing TiC particulates exhibited good cutting performance. Extensive crater wear was observed on both monolithic and TiN-containing silicon nitride tools after cutting the hardened alloy steel. Inconel 718 was extremely difficult to cut by the current cutting tools.

  • The effect of precipitates on the high temperature tensile properties of cast alloy 718 was investigated by phase extraction method and microstructural observation. The value of tensile strength and elongation gradually decreased with increasing testing temperature up to $760^{\circ}C$. Elongation of the alloy increased, while tensile strength decreased above 76$0^{\circ}C$. The amount of precipitates in the specimen that tensile tested at $760^{\circ}C$ showed maximum owing to stress assisted precipitation. Therefore, the alloy exhibited the lowest value of the elongation and the degree of decrease in yield strength at this temperature due to high flow stress of precipitates. Little amount of precipitate, especially $\gamma$' and $\gamma$", resulted in softening of the alloy at the temperature above $760^{\circ}C$.
