  • A natural colorant was extracted from Cassia tara L. using buffer solutions (pH: 2-11) as extractants. The dyeing solution (Cassia tara L. extract) extracted using pH 9 buffer solution was found to give the highest K/S values of dyed fabrics. Cotton and silk fabrics were dyed with Cassia tara L. extract at $60^{\circ}C$ for 60 min with pre-treatment of various metal salts as mordants. It was found that Cassia tara L. extract was polygenetic dyestuffs and its major components were anthraquinones. Studies have been made on the effects of the kind of mordant on dyeing properties and colour fastnesses of cotton and silk fabrics. The K/S of cotton fabrics increased in the order of the dyeing using $FeSO_4 >CuSO_4> ZnSO_4> MnSO_4\cong Al_2(SO_4)_3 > NiSo_4 > none$, however, the K/S of silk fabrics increased in the order of the dyeing using $FeSO_4 > CuSO_4 > ZnSO_4\cong Al_2(SO_4)_3 > MnSO_4\cong NiSO_4 > none$. It was found that the K/S values of dyed fabrics were largely affected by the colour difference $(\DeltaE)$ between mordanted fabric and control fabric. However, they were not depended on the content of mordanted metal ion of the fabrics. Mordants $FeSO_4$ and CuSO_4$ for cotton fabric, $FeSO_4,\; CuSO_4,\; and\; Al_2(S0_4)_3$ for silk fabric were found to give good light fastness (rating 4).

  • This study was carried out to investigate the extraction yield, the contents of total phenol substances and antioxidative substances, electron donating abilities, nitrite scavenging abilities of water and ethanol extracts from Cassia tora L. and Pueraria thunbergiana and antioxidative activity of water and ethoanol extract from Cassia tara L. Tatal phenol substances of water and ethanol extract from Cassia tora L. and Pueraria thunbergiana showed nearly the same levels, and the antioxidative substances of water and ethanol extract from Pueraria thunbergiana has as much as two times higher than those from Cassia tara L.. The nitrite scavenging abilities were measured at pH 1.2, 3.0, 4.2 and 6.0, respectively. Water and ethanol extracts from Cassia tora L showed 14.9%∼22.3% and 49.1%∼56.7%, and those from Pueraria thunbergiana revealed 57.7%∼61.0% of nitrite scavenging abilities, respectively. Especially the extracts from Pueraria thunbergiana showed higher pH dependence than those from Cassia tora L. The electrol donating abilities of water extract from Cassia tora L. were higher than those from Pueraria thunbergiana, and vice versa in the case of ethanol extracts. In the antioxidative activitiy of extracts from Cassia tora L. against linoleic acid during storage of 20 days at 50$^{circ}C$, peroxide values at the addition level of 5mg and 10mg were consoderably lower than 2mg although peroxide value increased above 375 after 12days of storage compared with the control(BHA-added) of 129 at 8days.

  • The desmutagenic activity of the water extract of Cassia tara L on the mutagenicity induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) and N-methyl-N-nitro-N'-nitrosoguani-dine (MNNG) was studied using the SOS Chromotest with Escherichia coli PQ37. The inhibition rates of water extract of Cassia tara L. at concentration of $100{\mu}g$/assay were 27.5% and 40% against 4-NQO and MNNG. The water extract of Cassia tara L. was separated into methanol soluble and methanol insoluble parts. The methanol soluble part exhibited higher inhibition effects than the methanol insoluble part against the mutagenic activities of 4-NQO and MNNG. Step-wise fractionation of methanol soluble part was done to obtain methanol, ethyl acetate and water fractions. Among these fractions, water fraction had the strongest inhibitory effects of 23.0 and 19.0% against mutagenicities of MNNG and 4NQO, respectively. The results clearly indicated that the water fraction showed much stronger antimutagenicity against MNNG than 4NQO. The inhibition rates of aqueous fraction of methanol-soluble from water extracted Cassia tara L. at concentrations of 1.0, 10, 100 and $250{\mu}g$/assay were 8.0%, 12.0%, 25.5% and 43.0%, respectively. The water fraction showed the inhibitory effects with dose response against the mutagenic activities induced by MNNG.

  • In order to determine the optimum planting density of Sickle Senna (Cassia tora L.), agronomic characters, yield components and grain yield were investigated under vinyl mulching and non -mulching condition. The characters, stem length, stem diameter, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of pods per m$^2$, and number of grains per pod, etc., were excellent under the vinyl mulching condition, and number of pods per m$^2$ was the highest in 60$\times$15cm planting space under vinyl mulching or non-mulching. Both of the weight of 100 grains and grain yield were also higher under the vinylmulching condition, and grain yield was the most excellent in 60$\times$15cm planting space under the vinlymulching, or non-mulching. Under the vinyl mulching and non-mulching, the analysis of variance for agronomic characters following the difference of planting density, were acknowledged to be worth of attention.
