Chemical composition of copra, palm kernel, and cashew co-products from South-East Asia and almond hulls from Australia

  • Objective: Oilseeds and nut co-products can be used as alternative feed ingredients in animal diets because they may have a lower cost than traditional ingredients. A study was, therefore, conducted to determine the chemical composition of copra, palm kernel, and nut co-products from South-East Asia or Australia. The hypothesis that country of production influences nutritional composition was tested. Methods: Oilseed meals included 2 copra expellers, 3 copra meals, and 12 palm kernel expellers. One source of almond hulls and cashew nut meal were also used. Samples were obtained from suppliers located in South-East Asia or Australia. All samples were analyzed for dry matter, gross energy, nitrogen, amino acids (AA), acid-hydrolyzed ether extract (AEE), ash, minerals, insoluble dietary fiber, and soluble dietary fiber. Copra and nut co-products were also analyzed for total starch and sugars. Results: Copra expellers had greater (p<0.05) concentrations of dry matter and AEE compared with copra meal. However, copra meal had greater (p<0.05) concentrations of total dietary fiber (soluble and insoluble) and copper than copra expellers. Palm kernel expellers from Indonesia had greater (p<0.05) concentration of histidine and tyrosine compared with palm kernel expellers from Vietnam. Almond hulls was high in dietary fiber, but also contained free glucose and fructose, whereas cashew nut meal was high in AEE, but low in all free sugars. Conclusion: Copra expellers have greater concentration of AEE, but less concentration of total dietary fiber when compared with copra meal, and except for a few AA, no differences in nutrient composition of palm kernel expellers produced in Indonesia or Vietnam were detected. According to the chemical composition of nut co-products, cashew nut meal may be more suitable for non-ruminant diets than almond hulls.

Study on sintering process of woodceramics from the cashew nutshell waste

  • In this study, the sintering mechanism of woodceramics (WCs) from cashew nut shell waste (CNSW) was studied by analyzing chemical reactions and structural changes during the sintering process of of CNSW powder, liquefied wood and green bodies of WCs at $900^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes in the $CO_2$ atmosphere. The chemical and structural properties of the products were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the decomposition reactions of liquefied wood and CNSW occurred simultaneously to form the hard carbon and the soft carbon at high temperature. The sintering mechanism of WCs has been presented.

실험통계법을 이용한 마찰재의 고온 마찰특성에 대한 고찰 (High Temperature Fade Behavior of Brake Friction Materials at Extreme Braking Conditions)

  • Tribological properties of high temperature fade were investigated by changing relative amounts of ingredients in the brake friction material. Based on a simple experimental formulation containing 10 ingredients, friction materials were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Twenty-five friction material specimens with different relative amounts of the ingredients were manufactured according to the constrained mixture design .The difference ($\Delta$${\mu}$=${\mu}$$\sub$max/. -${\mu}$$\sub$min/. ) of friction coefficients was measured to represent the high temperature fade. Results from elevated temperature tests showed that five ingredients including cashew, graphite, Sb$_2$S$_3$, ZrSiO$_4$, and Cu fibers played important roles on $\Delta$${\mu}$. In order to find relative importance on fade phenomena among these ingredients, ANOVA(analysis of variance) was performed in this investigation. Thirty-two friction material specimens by changing ${\pm}$50vol.% of these five ingredients were tested to examine the relative importance. Results showed that cashew, graphite '||'&'||' Sb$_2$S$_3$, and cashew '||'&'||' graphite aggravated the fade behavior and Cu fibers improved on fade resistance.

Cashew reject meal in diets of laying chickens: nutritional and economic suitability

  • The present study investigated the nutritional and economic suitability of cashew reject meal (full fat and defatted) as replacement for groundnut cake (GNC) in the diets of laying chickens. A total of eighty four brown shavers at 25 weeks of age were randomly allotted into seven dietary treatments each containing 6 replicates of 2 birds each. The seven diets prepared included diet 1, a control with GNC at $220gkg^{-1}$ as main protein source in the diet. Diets 2, 3 and 4 consist of gradual replacement of GNC with defatted cashew reject meal (DCRM) at 50%, 75% and 100% on weight for weight basis respectively while diets 5, 6 and 7 consist of gradual inclusion of full fat cashew reject meal (FCRM) to replace 25%, 35% and 50% of GNC protein respectively. Each group was allotted a diet in a completely randomized design in a study that lasted eight weeks during which records of the chemical constituent of the test ingredients, performance characteristics, egg quality traits and economic indicators were measured. Results showed that the crude protein were 22.10 and 35.4% for FCRM and DCRM respectively. Gross energy of DCRM was 5035 kcal/kg compared to GNC, 4752 kcal/kg. Result of aflatoxin $B_1$ revealed moderate level between 10 and $17{\mu}g/Kg$ in DCRM and GNC samples respectively. Birds on control gained 10 g, while those on DCRM and FCRM gained about 35 g and 120 g respectively. Feed intake declined (P < 0.05) with increased level of FCRM. Hen day production was highest in birds fed DCRM, followed by control and lowest value (P < 0.05) was recorded for FCRM. No significant change (P > 0.05) was observed for egg weight and shell thickness. Fat deposition and cholesterol content increased (P > 0.05) with increasing level of FCRM. The cost of feed per kilogram decreased gradually with increased inclusion level of CRM. The prediction equation showed the relative worth of DCRM compared to GNC was 92.3% whereas the actual market price of GNC triples that of DCRM. It was recommended that GNC could be completely replaced by DCRM in layer's diets in regions where this by product is abundant. However, FCRM should be cautiously used in diets of laying chickens.

캐슈를 첨가한 파운드케이크의 품질특성 (Quality Characteristics of Pound Cake with Addition of Cashew Nuts)

  • 제빵에 주요 원료인 마가린 대신 캐슈를 대체 지방으로 사용하여 건강에 좋은 제품을 제조하기 위해 캐슈를 첨가하여 제조한 파운드케이크의 품질 특성을 조사하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 대조군의 중량은 392.8 g, 캐슈 첨가군은 394.5~403.5 g으로 첨가군에서 중량이 증가하였으며, 부피는 대조군 666.8 mL, 첨가군은 683.8~734.3 mL로 유의적으로 증가하였다. 2) 비용적은 대조군 1.70, 첨가군은 1.73~1.82로 캐슈첨가량이 많아질수록 증가하였으며, 반죽 수율은 대조군 114.6%, 캐슈 첨가군은 111.5~114.1%로 캐슈 첨가량이 증가할수록 감소하였다. 굽기손실률은 대조군 12.7%에 비하여 캐슈 첨가군은 10.3~12.3%로 낮았다. 3) 경도는 제조 당일 시료의 경우 대조군 0.458 kg, 첨가군은 0.493~0.589 kg으로 대조군에 비하여 유의적으로 증가하였고, 5일 저장 시료의 경우 대조군 1.160 kg, 첨가군은 0.841~1.188 kg으로 첨가량이 증가할수록 경도가 유의적으로 감소하였다. 진입력은 제조 당일의 경우 대조군 0.060 kg, 첨가군은 0.077~0.083 kg으로 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 증가하였고, 5일 실온에 방치 후 대조군 0.231 kg, 첨가군 0.152~0.213 kg으로 유의적으로 감소하였다. 4) 색도의 L값은 대조군 42.16, 첨가군은 40.50~42.42로 캐슈 첨가량에 따라 감소하였으며, 적색도 a 값은 대조군 -0.52, 첨가군은 -0.31~-0.42로 첨가군에서 감소하였고, 황색도 b값은 대조군 19.22, 첨가군은 19.24~19.45로 첨가군에서는 증가하였다. 5) 관능검사 결과, 색상은 대조군 3.5, 첨가군에서는 2.9~3.2, 향미는 대조군 2.9, 첨가군이 3.3~4.1로 대조군에 비하여 향미에서 높은 선호도를 보였으며, 맛은 대조군 2.5에 비하여 캐슈 첨가군에서 유의적으로 높았다. 촉촉함은 대조군 3.2, C2~C4에서 3.5~3.7로 증가하였으며, 씹힘성은 대조군 2.5, 첨가군에서는 2.9~3.8로 대조군에 비해 첨가군에서 유의적으로 높았다. 전체적인 기호도는 C3가 4.1로 가장 높았고 그 다음은 C4 순이었다. 관능검사 결과 파운드케이크에 대한 캐슈의 첨가는 색상을 제외한 냄새, 맛, 질감에 대한 선호도를 증가시켰으며 C3, C4는 다른 시료에 비해 높은 기호도를 보였다. 이상의 실험을 통해 제빵에서 캐슈를 마가린의 대체 지방으로 사용하였을 때 품질평가에서 좋은 결과를 보였다. 최근 들어 웰빙이 새로운 문화코드로 제시되고 있는데 이는 건강에 대한 높은 관심을 반영한 것으로 보인다. 서구화된 식생활에 의해 빵과 케이크류는 식단의 간편성으로 소비량이 크게 증가하고 있는 식품의 하나로 고급화, 다양화가 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 케이크에 첨가되는 마가린, 쇼트닝 등 경화유지보다는 지방 함량이많은 자연식품을 사용하는 것이 건강에 더 좋을 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 캐슈는 불포화지방산이 풍부한 지방, 단백질, 탄수화물, 비타민 B군 함량이 풍부하며, 마가린의 지방대체제로서 이를 첨가한 제품은 건강을 추구하는 현대인들이 선호하는 제품이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Controlling the Hardness and Tribological Behaviour of Non-asbestos Brake Lining Materials for Automobiles

  • In spite of unparalleled combination of essential material properties for brake linings and clutch facings, replacement for asbestos is seriously called for since it is a health hazard. Once asbestos is replaced with other material then composition and properties of brake pad changes. In certain cases hardness of the material may be high enough to affect the rotor material. In this study, hardness of the brake pad has been controlled using suitable reinforcement materials like glass, carbon and Kevlar pulp. Brake pad formulations were made using CNSL (cashew net shell liquid) modified phenolic resin as a binder, graphite or cashew dust as a friction modifier and barium sulphate, talc and wollastonite as fillers. Influence of each component on the hardness value has been studied and a proper formulation has been arrived at to obtain hardness values around 35 on Scleroscopic scale. Friction and wear properties of the respective brake pad materials have been measured on a dynamometer and their performance was evaluated.

천연 캐슈너트 외피유를 이용한 에폭시 수지의 가교 (Curing of Epoxy Resin with Natural Cashew Nut Shell Liquids)

  • 일반적인 아미드형 가교제(HD)를 함유한 에폭시 수지의 가교거동을 캐슈너트 외피유(CNSL) 및 CNSL-포름알데하이드 수지(CFR) 그리고 피마자유 존재 하에서 시차열량계(DSC)를 이용하여 조사하였다. 가교반응에 대한 활성화 에너지를 여러 가지 가열속도에서 비등온 DSC 열량그래프로부터 계산하였다. 피마자유 존재 하에서 에폭시 수지의 가교는 1단계 반응을 나타낸 반면 CNSL 및 CFR 존재 하에서는 2단계 가교거동을 나타내었다. 즉, 에폭시 수지/CNSL(혹은 CFR)/HD 블렌드의 경우 경쟁적인 가교반응이 나타났다. HD가 없는 에폭시 수지/CNSL(혹은 CFR) 블렌드의 경우 CFR 시스템이 CNSL보다 낮은 가교엔탈피 값을 나타내었고, CNSL 및 CFR 함량이 증가할수록 가교활성화 에너지는 증가하였다.

견과류의 지방산, 트리아실글리세롤, 토코페롤 및 파이토스테롤의 조성 연구 (Studies on the Content of Triacylglycerol Species, Tocopherols, and Phytosterols from the Selected Nuts)

  • 견과류 중 sunflower seed, cashew nut, walnut, pistachio, pumpkin seed, ginkgo, hazel nut, pecan을 원료로 하여 지방산 조성 분석 및 sn-2 position 분석, triacylglycerol species의 분석, tocopherol, phytosterol 함량을 분석하였다. 조지방 함량은 hazel nut에서 약 39.60 wt%로 가장 높았으며, walnut 35.25 wt%, pistachio 30.22 wt% 등의 순이었다. GC에 의한 sn-2 위치의 지방산 조성 분석 결과, oleic acid의 함량이 많은 견과류는 cashew nut, pistachio, hazel nut, pecan 이였으며, 특히 ginkgo의 경우 특이적으로 oleic acid의 이성체인 vaccenic acid가 10.72 wt% 나타냄을 확인할 수 있었다. 반면, linoleic acid 등이 높은 견과류는 sunflower seed, walnut, pumpkin seed 이었다. 견과류들의 TAG species의 PN값은 40∼52 사이에 존재하였다. Tocopherol의 함량은 ginkgo, sunflower seed, pumpkin seed 등에서 각각 48.57, 38.35, 31.43 mg/100 g 순으로 높은 함량을 나타내었다. 또한 총 phytosterol의 경우 88.60∼947.20 mg/100 g 사이에 함량을 나타내었다.

철원 도피안사 철조비로자나불상의 보존처리 (A Conservation Treatment for the Seated Iron Buddha Statue of Dopian Temple, Cheolwon)

  • The Seated iron Vairocana Buddha statue of Dopiansa Temple, Cheolwon was designated National treasure No. 63, it is very important to rearch about Korean Buddha statue because it has an inscription on the back indicates that it was made in 865 A.D., the fifth year of the reign of King Gyeongmun(861-875) of Unified Silla(668-935), through the devoted faith of some 1,500 Buddhist followers of the Cheorwon-gun area. In this conservation treatment, for the Seated iron Vairocana Buddha statue of Dopiansa Temple, Cheolwon plating layer and cashew paint layer of the iron pedestal were removed and for the paint the Body of the Buddha, fake metal layer and plaster layer were removed, stabilizing treatment and coating treatment were done, and removal and restoration of earlobe which had been damaged and later was restored with plaster in the regilding in 1988, and the white hair on forehead was replaced with material of rock crystal, and conch-shaped hair damaged was restored on 35 spots.
