  • PURPOSES: The objective of this paper is to select the confidential intervals by utilizing the second moment reliability index(Hasofer and Lind; 1974) related to the number of load applications to failure which explains the fatigue failure and rut depth that it indicates the permanent deformation. By using Finite Element Method (FEM) Program, we can easily confirm the rut depth and number of load repetitions without Pavement Design Procedures for generally designing pavement depths. METHODS : In this study, the predictive models for the rut depth and the number of load repetitions to fatigue failure were used for determining the second moment reliability index (${\beta}$). From the case study results using KICTPAVE, the results of the rut depth and the number of load repetitions to fatigue failure were deducted by calculating the empirical predictive equations. Also, the confidential intervals for rut depth and number of load repetitions were selected from the results of the predictive models. To determine the second moment reliability index, the spreadsheet method using Excel's Solver was used. RESULTS : From the case studies about pavement conditions, the results of stress, displacement and strain were different with depth conditions of layers and layer properties. In the clay soil conditions, the values of strain and stresses in the directly loaded sections are relatively greater than other conditions. It indicates that the second moment reliability index is small and confidential intervals for rut depth and the number of load applications are narrow when we apply the clay soil conditions comparing to the applications of other soil conditions. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of the second moment reliability index and the confidential intervals, the minimum and maximum values of reliability index indicate approximately 1.79 at Case 9 and 2.19 at Case 22. The broadest widths of confidential intervals for rut depth and the number of load repetitions are respectively occurred in Case 9 and Case 7.

  • Carburizing treatments are the important way to developing fatigue strength and wear resistance. It is well known that the case depth is one of the most significant parameters determining fatigue strength. In this study, 3-point bending fatigue test was conducted to evaluate fatigue strength for the carburized depth with 18CrNiMo7-6 steel. As a result, fatigue strength increased with effective case depth decreased. It is shown that hardness in case hardened layer played principal role in the fatigue strength.

  • The objectives of this study were to test geothermal conductivity (k), water velocity, water quantity, and pipe pressure from a ground heat exchanger in the field, and then to analyze these data in relation to the effectiveness and economical efficiency for application of geothermal energy. After installation of the apparatus required for field tests, geothermal conductivity values were obtained from three different cases (second, third, and fourth). The k values of the second case (506 m depth) and third case (151 m depth) are approximately 2.9 and 2.8, respectively. The k value of the fourth case (506 m depth, double pipe) is 2.5, which is similar to the second and third cases. This result indicates that hole depth is a critical factor for geothermal applications. Analysis of the field data (k, water velocity, water quantity, and pipe pressure) reveals that a single geothermal system at 506 m depth is more economically efficient than three geothermal systems at depths intervals of 151 m. Although it is more expensive to install a geothermal system at 506 m depth than at 151 m depth, test results showed that the geothermal system of the fourth case (506 m, double pipe) is more economically efficient than the system at 151 m depth. Considering the optional cost of maintenance, which is a non-operational expense, the geothermal system of the fourth case is economically efficient. Large cities and areas with high land prices should make greater use of geothermal energy.

  • SCM 21 and D.P steel were carburized in vacuum using prophane at a temperature ranging from 1228k to 1308k under a gas pressure ranging from 21.3kpa to 61.8kpa, and the following results were obrained. 1) D.P. steel has considerable efficiency in depressing the grain growth during the high temperature carburizing and it has fine structure even at 1268k for 14.4ks when carburizied. Therefore this steel is expected to be suitable for vacuum carburizing at a high temperature. 2) Case depth was increased as the carburizing temperature increases and it was 3.2mm at max, temperature of 1308k, for max, time of 14.4ks and under max, pressure of 61.8kpa. Thus vacuum-carburizing was considered effective for the materials which need case depth, which is necessary for machine structure use. 3) The rate of case depth of SCM 21 was faster than D.P. steel under same carburizing conditions and the increasing rate of the case depth was constant. 4) Case depth was increased as the gas pressure becomes high under same carburizing temperature. 5) Case carbon concentration, $C_s$, of SCM 21 obeys to a formula, $$C_s=kt^{1/2}+C_0$$ Where k is $2.15{\times}10^{-2}$($wt%.S^{-1/2}$) and this value is a little bit lower than that of SNCM 815.

  • In this study, we measure damage depth and calculate effective impact speed in case of rear-end collision using real car insurance data. We study the relationship between demage depth and effective impact speed, and present statistical model for these two variables. In our real data study, 3-degree polynomial equation model is better fit to effective impact speed and demage depth than the simple linear model that are estimated in previous other studies. Damage depth is a major factor to see the extent of impact in a car collision, and by using this equation, it is possible to evaluate the severity of driver's injury.

  • The distribution submarine cables are normally used for power supply at island, which are mostly installed in the southern coast of KOREA, and partially installed in the west coast and Jeju-Island. There are two way of submarine cable burying system, buried and unburied type. Since 2003, KEPCO is entirely being constructing the distribution submarine cable by buried type. In this case, 'burial depth' is key index for evaluating the suitability of the buried situation. Therefore, the measurement accuracy of 'burial depth' is a big issue for burying system in the distribution submarine cable. This paper demonstrates the measurement error of burial depth that is affected by electrical factor such as grounding type of submarine cable in case of magnetic field detection method, and indicates the method to reduce the measurement error in buried type of distribution submarine cable system.

  • The characteristics of Depth-Area-Duration (DAD) for 50 storms over the Geumgang river basin have been analysed in terms of various storm causes using the precipitation data during the period from 1984 to 2003. Results show that the ratio of the precipitation depth to duration, and the ratio of decrease in the precipitation depth to area are the largest in the case of the tropical cyclone. Storm maximization ratios are in the range 1.03 to 2.66 for the 50 selected heavy precipitation cases over Geumgang river basin, with the largest value for the tropical cyclone case, suggesting that the tropical cyclone could cause heavier precipitation than the other storms. In addition, the 24-hour probable maximum precipitation for the Geumgang river basin is estimated to be about 745 mm in the maximum precipitation area.

  • To extract the depth map from a single image, a number of CNN-based deep learning methods have been performed in recent research. In this study, the GAN structure of Pix2Pix is maintained. this model allows to converge well, because it has the structure of the generator and the discriminator. But the convolution in this model takes a long time to compute. So we change the convolution form in the generator to a depthwise convolution to improve the speed while preserving the result. Thus, the seven down-sizing convolutional hidden layers in the generator U-Net are changed to depthwise convolution. This type of convolution decreases the number of parameters, and also speeds up computation time. The proposed model shows similar depth map prediction results as in the case of the existing structure, and the computation time in case of a inference is decreased by 64%.

  • The drift force acting on a freely-floating sphere in water of finite depth is studied within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is determined by distribution pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere. Upon knowing values of the potential, hydrodynamic forces are evaluated by integrating pressures over the immersed surface of the sphere. The motion response of the sphere in water of finite depth is obtained by solving the equation of motion. From these results, the drift force on the sphere is evaluated by the momentum theorem, in which a far-field velocity potential is utilized in forms of Kochin function. The drift force coefficient Cdr of a fixed sphere increases monotononically with non-dimensional wave frequency ${\sigma}a$. On the other hand, in freely-floating case, the Cdr has a peak value at ${\sigma}a$ of heave resonance. The magnitude of the drift force coefficient Cdr in the case of finite depth is different form that for deep water, but the general tendency seems to be similar in both cases. It is to note that Cdr is greater than 1.0 when non-dimensional water depth d/a is 1.5 in the case of freely-floating sphere.

  • This study compared ensemble mean and probability forecasts of snow depth amount associated with winter storm over South Korea on 28 December 2012 at five operational forecast centers (CMA, ECMWF, NCEP, KMA, and UMKO). And cause of difference in predicted snow depth at each Ensemble Prediction System (EPS) was investigated by using THe Observing system Research and Predictability EXperiment (THORPEX) Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) data. This snowfall event occurred due to low pressure passing through South Sea of Korea. Amount of 6 hr accumulated snow depth was more than 10 cm over southern region of South Korea In this case study, ECMWF showed best prediction skill for the spatio-temporal distribution of snow depth. At first, ECMWF EPS has been consistently enhancing the indications present in ensemble mean snow depth forecasts from 7-day lead time. Secondly, its ensemble probabilities in excess of 2~5 cm/6 hour have been coincided with observation frequencies. And this snowfall case could be predicted from 5-day lead time by using 10-day lag ensemble mean 6 hr accumulated snow depth distribution. In addition, the cause of good performances at ECMWF EPS in predicted snow depth amounts was due to outstanding prediction ability of forming inversion layer with below $0^{\circ}C$ temperature in low level (below 850 hPa) according to $35^{\circ}N$ at 1-day lead time.
