Construction accidents occur reiteratively in similar fashions. There have been several attempts to develop a safety program for preventing construction accidents on sites. It will be very effective to use previous accident cases for establishing proper safety plan and managing safety process. This research develops a case-based construction safety management system which enables construction managers or safety managers to prevent potential accidents during the construction process. The case-oriented approach is performed through the representation of previous accident cases in accordant with the similarity to the conditions of current site. It uses a case-based reasoning which is one of the reasoning methods of an expert system. A prototype system for the reasoning model was implemented using one of the case based system development tools. The system was applied to a real construction site to verify its capability and validity. It was founded that the causes of accidents were successfully removed, so the proposed model proved to be reasonable. Additional research is needed to resolve the technical problem how to adapt the countermeasures for accident prevention provided by the reasoning model.
A data model is a diagram that describes the properties of different categories of data and the associations among them within a business or information system. In spite of its importance and usefulness, data modeling activity requires not only a lot of time and effort but also extensive experience and expertise. The data models for similar business areas are analogous to one another. Therefore, it is reasonable to reuse the already-developed data models if the target business area is similar to what we have already analyzed before. In this research, we develop a case-based reasoning system for data model reuse, which we shall call CB-DM Reuser (Case-Based Data Model Reuser). CB-DM Reuse consists of four subsystems : the graphic user interface to interact with end user, the data model management system to build new data model, the case base to store the past data models, and the knowledge base to store data modeling and data model reusing knowledge. We present the functionality of CB-DM Reuser and show how it works on real-life a, pp.ication.

In order to automatically determine the sequences of block assembly operations in shipbuilding, a process planning system using case-based reasoning (CBR) is developed. A block-assembly planning problem is modeled as a constraint satisfaction problem where the precedence relations between operations are considered constraints. The process planning system generates an assembly sequence by adapting information such as solutions and constraints collected from similar cases retrieved from the case base. In order to find similar cases, the process planning system first matches the parts of the problem and the parts of each case based on their roles in the assembly, and then it matches the relations related to the parts-pairs. The part involved in more operations are considered more important. The process planning system is applied to simple examples fur verification and comparison.
Continuing from previous studies of sustainable concrete containing environmentally friendly materials and existing modeling approach to predicting concrete properties, this study developed an estimation methodology to predicting the strength of sustainable concrete using an advanced case-based reasoning approach. It was conducted in two steps: (i) establishment of a case database and (ii) development of an advanced case-based reasoning model. Through the experimental studies, a total of 144 observations for concrete compressive strength and tensile strength were established to develop the estimation model. As a result, the prediction accuracy of the A-CBR model (i.e., 95.214% for compressive strength and 92.448% for tensile strength) performed superior to other conventional methodologies (e.g., basic case-based reasoning and artificial neural network models). The developed methodology provides an alternative approach in predicting concrete properties and could be further extended to the future research area in durability of sustainable concrete.
Use Case Point(UCP) is a measure of a software project size for software effort estimation based on use case. UCP measures the size of the software project based on the use case model. Because UCP is based on the use case model, it is intuitive and easy to obtain. Also, it does not require extra artifacts. On the other hand, UCP has some problems. UCP assumes every transaction has the same complexity. But, the number of operations and complexity of operations may affect complexity of transaction. In addition, UCP uses simple rating scale of complexity, but it may be inadequate for detailed estimates. To solve these problems, we suggest "Transaction Point(TP)", a size measure based on use case transaction. TP considers actors and operations in transaction. Complexity of transaction is based on the number of operations and complexity of operation, so it can support detailed estimation.

In this paper we introduce the Internet-based purchase support systems using data mining and case-based reasoning (CBR). Internet Business activity that involves the end user is undergoing a significant revolution. The ability to track users browsing behavior has brought the vendor and end customer's closer than ever before. It is now possible for a vendor to personalize his product message for individual customers at massive scale. Most of former researchers, in this research arena, used data mining techniques to pursue the customer's future behavior and to improve the frequency of repurchase. The area of data mining can be defined as efficiently discovering association rules from large collections of data. However, the basic association rule-based data mining technique was not flexible. If there were no inference rules to track the customer's future behavior, association rule-based data mining systems may not present more information. To resolve this problem, we combined association rule-based data mining with CBR mechanism. CBR is used in reasoning for customer's preference searching and training through the cases. Data mining and CBR-based hybrid purchase support mechanism can reflect both association rule-based logical inference and case-based information reuse. A Web-log data gathered in the real-world Internet shopping mall is given to illustrate the quality of the proposed systems.
PURPOSES : Case studies of an asphalt-overlay project with a performance-based contract method were conducted on a national highway in Korea to evaluate the effect of the method on asphalt pavement maintenance. This study evaluated the procedure of the performance-based contract method. METHODS : In this study, an asphalt-pavement maintenance project for a national highway was assessed with a performance-based contract to investigate the advantage of the new contract procedures. This is the first trial applying the performance-based contract to a pavement-rehabilitation project in Korea. In the four case studies, the warranty period of the performance-based contract was designed for seven years. The research team monitored the construction site to compare the normal contract method with the performance-based contract method. The case studies' project sites were investigated after the end of the construction. RESULTS : Based on the limited case studies, the performance-based contract method could extend the service life of the asphalt pavement and reduce the pavement-maintenance budget because the quality control was well managed by the contractors. However, a few construction laws would be necessary to apply the performance-based contract method in the future. CONCLUSIONS : Using the performance-based contract, the construction company made great efforts to guarantee the warranty period and to apply the optimal maintenance method, based on the pavement distress condition. The contractor and the agency would need to understand the new performance-based contract system for it to be activated. Therefore, a proper education program for the performance-based contract system would be needed to educate the stakeholders regarding the procedures and their effects on the pavement management and maintenance.
This study was performed to construct tree species classification map according to three information types (spectral information, texture information, and spectral and texture information) by altitude (30 m, 60 m, 90 m) using the unmanned aerial vehicle images and the object-based classification method, and to evaluate the concordance rate through field survey data. The object-based, optimal weighted values by altitude were 176 for 30 m images, 111 for 60 m images, and 108 for 90 m images in the case of Scale while 0.4/0.6, 0.5/0.5, in the case of the shape/color and compactness/smoothness respectively regardless of the altitude. The overall accuracy according to the type of information by altitude, the information on spectral and texture information was about 88% in the case of 30 m and the spectral information was about 98% and about 86% in the case of 60 m and 90 m respectively showing the highest rates. The concordance rate with the field survey data per tree species was the highest with about 92% in the case of Pinus densiflora at 30 m, about 100% in the case of Prunus sargentii Rehder tree at 60 m, and about 89% in the case of Robinia pseudoacacia L. at 90 m.
Conventional case-based reasoning (CBR) does not perform efficiently for high volume dataset because of case-retrieval time. In order to overcome this problem, some previous researches suggest clustering a case-base into several small groups, and retrieve neighbors within a corresponding group to a target case. However, this approach generally produces less accurate predictive performances than the conventional CBR. This paper suggests a new hybrid case-based reasoning method which dynamically composing a searching pool for each target case. This method is applied to diagnose for the heart disease dataset. The results show that the suggested hybrid method produces statistically the same level of predictive performances with using significantly less computational cost than the CBR method and also outperforms the basic clustering-CBR (C-CBR) method.

Generating a project network of a specific construction project is very time consuming and difficult task in the field. To effectiviely automate and support the planning process, we design a case-based project planning expert system inspired by the fact a human expert project planner uses previous cases for planning a new project. A construction project case consist of its specific characteristics and the corresponding project network (i.e. project plan). Using frame based representation. we represent the project features affecting the progress network and the entities composing the project plan such as the buildings, construction methods, WBS (work breakdown structure), activities, and resources. The project planning process runs through most similar case retrieval, case adaptation, and user requirement satisfaction. We represent the construction domain knowledge for each procedure using constraints and rules. We develop the methodology for constraint-based case adaption. Case adaptation process mainly consist of activity generation/deletion and predecence constraint satisfaction, for which we develop the dynamic constraint generation method and connect user-level requirement representation the system-level network modification knowledge. The methodology is being applied to the prototype for apartment construction project planning.
