Medicinal plants extracted with 80% ethanol at boiling point for 3 hrs was used as antibacterial agent after freeze dried. This study was conducted to find antibacterial agent against growth of dental caries bacteria. St. mutans KDJ-50 from 32 medicinal plants of which safety was indetified. The result of using paper disc method. Caryophylli Flos. Coptidis Rhizoma. Phellodendri Cortex. Schizamdrae Fructs. Myristicae Semen, Crataegi Fructus and Acori Graminei Rhizoma was selected as antibacterial agent. The result of viable cell counting method. the antibacterial activity of Caryophylli Flos was highest among tested 7 medicinal plants followed by Phellodendri Cortex and Coptidis Rhizoma. The extinction effect of the St. mutans by Caryophylli Flos was shown with the addition of 0.5 (w/v) in the medium. The high antibacterial activity was acquired at high extraction temperature and long extraction temperature. The antibacterial activity of Caryophylli Flos was not effected by the concentration of ethanol.
Objective : Caryophylli Flos has been used in Korean medicine to relieve vomiting and pains caused by chills that make fluid circulation difficult. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of ethanol extract of Caryophylli Flos (CF) in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced apoptotic cell death in human keratinocyte HaCaT cells. Methods : CF was prepared by extracting 200 g of Caryophylli Flos in 2 L of ethanol for 48 h. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay, and the protein expression was monitored by Western blot analysis. Apoptosis was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured using fluorescent dye, and reduced glutathione (GSH) was determined with a colorimetric commercial kit. Results : CF protected HaCaT cells from cell death caused by oxidative stress after H2O2 treatment. H2O2 amplified generation of ROS and induced depletion of GSH, whereas these changes in ROS and GSH were inhibited by GF treatment. In addition, H2O2 resulted in apoptosis as assessed by TUNEL assay and the expression of apoptosis regulator proteins. However, cells treated with CF showed a decrease in TUNEL-positive cells and restored the reduced expression of procaspase-9, -3 and PARP. Conclusion : This study showed cytoprotective effects of CF by anti-apoptotic activity while exerting antioxidative activity in H2O2-treated HaCaT cells. These results suggest that CF could be beneficial in skin damage caused by oxidative stress.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of natural resources against growth of oral bacteria. The CHJ-5 strain was isolated from oral cavity of dental patients. Similarity index values of oral bacterium CHJ-5 was 0.876 to E. faecalis by cellular fatty acid analysis(Analytical Services Inc., USA). As a result of investigation about the growth inhibition of 32 kinds of natural resources on E. faecalis CHJ-5. This strain was inhibited by Schizamdrae fructus, Coptidis rhizoma and Caryophylli flos. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of Schizamdrae fructus, Coptidis rhizoma and Caryophylli flos were 0.1%, 02% and 0.1% on E. faecalis CHJ-5, respectively.
Three prolyl endopeptidase inhibitors were isolated and identified as luteolin, quercetin and ${\beta}$-sitosterol-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside with $IC_{50}$ of 0.17, 0.19 and 27.5 ppm, respectively. The inhibition of two flavonoids were non-competitive with substrate. Twenty authentic flavonoids were tested in order to investigate structure-activity relationship. No significant relationship was found in them, however, catechol moiety of B-ring and 7-OH group in flavonoid skeleton were seemed to be responsible for the stronger activity.

To isolate biologically active compounds which exhibit tyrosinase inhibition activity and ultimately express skin whitening effect, 14 oriental herbal drugs were screened in ter ms of tyrosinase inhibition. For this purpose, in vitro enzyme assay system for tyrosinase, so called Pomerantz method with some modifications has been established. Crude methanolic extracts from 14 herbal drugs were made and examined for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. Those extracts from Cnidii Rhizoma, Arecae Semen, Caryophylli Flos, and Ephedrae Herba showed strong inhibitory activities on mushroom tyrosinase. Therefore, crude methanolic extracts from those 4 herbal drugs were further fractionated using ether, butanol and water. respectively. The ether and n-butanol extracts from Arecae Semen and the n-butanol and water extracts from Caryophylli Flos, respectively, showed relatively strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity compared to arbutin.

Objectives : Herbal medicinal mixture (JMB) are consisted of Caryophylli Flos, Aucklandiae Radix and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix. Each of herbal medicines has studied on anti-oxidant effect. So this study was conducted to investigate efficacy and potency of JMB on anti-oxidation. Methods : The JMB was extracted at room temperature by 80% ethanol. And total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents in JMB ethanol extract were determined by colorimetric method. Also, DPPH, ABTS free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power of JMB ethanol extract were measured at 100, 500, 1000, $5000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ concentrations by spectrometric assay. Positive control was used BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole). Results : The total polyphenol contents and total flavonoid contents of the extract were 55.38 mg/TAEg, 513.72 mg/RUEg, respectively. Also, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power of JMB ethanol extract in treated concentrations (100, 500, 1000, $5000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) increased dose dependently. In particular, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity of JMB ethanol extract at 500, 1000, $5000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ was similar to positive control (BHA) at high concentration (50, $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). ABTS free radical scavenging capacity of JMB ethanol extract at 500, 1000, 5000 ug/ml was similar to BHA at high concentration (50, $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). Also, reducing power was showed that JMB ethanol extract at $5000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ was similar to BHA at high concentration (50, $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). Conclusions : These results suggest that JMB ethanol extract has effects to scavenge free radicals. Therefore, JMB has potential and applicable benefits for development of materials and products to have anti-oxidation functions.
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data regarding the perceptions of medicated diets among chefs. The subjects were 22 exemplary restaurant chefs in the Danyang area. The results showed that 40.9% of the chefs regarded the taste of medicated diets as good. Conversely, 22.7% of the subjects answered that they didn't know about medicated diets. Mass media and education from relevant institutions were the means of acquiring information about medicated diets. The chefs recognized that varieties of sauce could make medicated diets popular because of special flavor. Female chefs were generally more familiar with herbs than male chefs. Overall, the chefs were not familiar with Menthae Herba, Atractylodis Japonica, Adenophorae radix, Caryophylli Flos, or Carthami Flos. However, they were familiar with Glycyrrhizae Radix, Cassiae Semen, Cinnamomi Cortex, Polygonati Rhizoma, Mume Fructus, and Ginseng Radix, even though they didn't like the tastes pertaining to medicated diets. Ginseng Radix was the most well-known oriental herb, and Mume Fructus and Rubi Fructus were also popular. The most popular cooking methods for medicated diets were, in order, boiling rice, roasting items, and preparing the herbs as beverages.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effects of the interior warming herbs on vaginal microbes.
