Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess an association between nutrient intake and prevalence risk of deciduous dental caries among preschool children. Methods: A total of 922 children aged 3 to 5 years was selected from the database of Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHAINS). Data were included socio-demographic characteristics, oral health related behaviour, nutrient intake(carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, phosphate, iron, sodium and potassium), and oral health status(dft index). To assess the crude and adjusted associations, logistic regression analysis were applied considering a complex sampling design. Results: Children who were more consumed protein, calcium, phosphate, iron and sodium had slightly lower prevalence risk of deciduous dental caries after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and oral health related behaviour. Moreover, prevalence risk of the highest intake of phosphate and sodium(3rd tertiles) was significant lower than that of the lowest intake(1st tertiles). Conclusion: The nutrient intake was slightly associated with the prevalence risk of deciduous dental caries.

The purpose of this study was to do an epidemiological survey of the salivary reductase activity and dental caries prevalence of the large group of preschool children and analyze the validity of the salivary reductase activity test as a caries activity test. One thousand and forty-four preschool children were examined for caries experience and salivary reductase activity by dental survey and the Resazurin Disc Test. 39.8% of children showed low salivary reductase activity, 39.4% showed middle, and 20.8% showed high. Salivary reductase activity increased as age increased. All indexes of caries experience were high when salivary reductase activity was high. There was positive relation between salivary reductase activity and caries experience. The salivary reductase activity of children with no caries experience was lower than that of children with caries experience. The salivary reductase activity of children with low caries experience was lower than that of children with high caries experience. It seemed that the salivary reductase activity test had basic validity as a caries activity test. However, the test's ability to select the small risk group of high caries susceptibility should be enhanced.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of socioeconomic factors and health behaviors on the prevalence of oral diseases(dental caries and periodontal disease) among Korean adults. Data from the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed for adults aged over 19 years (n=25,215). Oral disease was defined as disease diagnosed by a dentist for the previous 12 months. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to conduct statistical analysis. The population without dental caries and periodontal diseases were used as the reference category for all analysis. The overall prevalence of annual dentist-diagnosed dental caries and periodontal diseases were 23.5% and 10.6% respectively. The relative risk of developing dental caries for graduates of middle school and lower were 1.53 times (95% CI: 1.24-1.89) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to college graduates. Low income earners were 1.23 times(95% CI: 1.01-1.49) more likely to develop dental caries than high income earners. Persons covered by national medical insurance were 1.45 times(95% CI: 1.08-1.95) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to persons covered by employee medical insurance. Compared with persons not eating snacks, the risk of developing caries in persons eating snacks once a day was 1.16(95% CI: 1.01-1.32), while those who snacked twice or more a day were 1.19(95% CI: 1.01-1.41). The relative risk of developing periodontal disease was 3.71(95% CI: 2.38-5.80) higher in older individuals than younger. In terms of education level, middle school graduates and lower were 1.54 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than college graduates. Low income earners were 1.47 times more likely to develop periodontal diseases than high income earners. Using data from a large, nationally representative sample of Korean populations, we support the hypothesis that the prevalence of oral diseases is related with socioeconomic factors and health behaviors. More intensive intervention efforts to reduce the prevalence of dental diseases are warranted in Korea.
This study was conducted to investigate dental caries according to obesity in order to provide basic data for efficient dental health program for elementary school students. Data were obtained from a health record book of 668 elementary school students in Chun Cheon city in 1998. Obesity was categorized into overweight. normal and under weight groups by Rohrer index. Dental caries was classified into decayed. filled and missed teeth. The result were as follow: 1. Prevalence rate of dental caries(dft) was $78.7\%$ and mean dft was 2.96; decayed and filled teeth was 1.01 and 1.95. respectively. As for mean dft. a siginificant difference were shown according to obesity and age. while no siginificant difference was shown between boys and girls. 2. Prevalence rate of dental caries including missed teeth (dmft) rate was $83.9\%$ and mean dmft was 3.64. As for mean dmft. a siginificant difference were shown according to obesity and age. while no siginificant difference was shown between boys and girls.
Objectives: This study aims to assess the relationship between the body mass index and waist circumference, which are indicators of obesity, and dental caries according to gender. Methods: Data were used from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Out of a total of 29,321 subjects, 13,222 persons aged 19 or older and who responded to the survey items of this study were selected as subjects to determine the relationship between obesity and dental caries. Results: In the body mass index, the obese group had a higher prevalence of dental caries in both males (1.25 times) and females (1.35 times) than the normal group. Even in the underweight group, males were 1.83 times more likely to have dental caries than the normal group. In the waist circumference, the obese group had a 1.48 times higher prevalence of dental caries than the normal group in women only. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, it was observed that obesity was related to dental caries, and it was thought that obesity management and oral care education programs for adults in Korea were necessary.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of mothers education attainment on prevalence of dental caries among their preschool children. Methods: Data were obtained from the third 2006 Korea National Oral Health Survey. A total of 515 preschool children aged 2 to 7 years and their mothers were selected in this study. We used mother's education level as her socioeconomic position and controlled children's tooth brushing frequency, tooth brushing before bed, the frequency of eating snack, and the preventive dental visit. Whether children experienced dental caries or not and the number of decayed or filled or missing tooth surface they had were used as outcome variables. Results: The proportion of children affected with dental caries was 46.21%. The mother's education level affected children's caries significantly (p<0.05) and children whose mother attended less than high school had more possibility of having caries than children whose mother graduated from college or more (p<0.05). This effect was still significant and got larger(p<0.05), even after controlling children's dental health behavior. Conclusion: This study showed that mother's education level affected the prevalence of caries among their preschool children. In addition, this result indicated a need for more definite policy for children's dental health in lower socioeconomic class with general dental education.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the caries prevalence and caries pattern of preschool children in a small city. Six hundred twenty four kindergarten children in Milyang city were examined for their caries experience of individual teeth and surfaces by dmf index. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The rate of children with caries experience(dmft rate) in primary teeth was 74.0% in 3-year-olds, 83.8% in 4-year-olds, and 90.6% in 5-year-olds. The mean number of decayed, missed, and filled primary teeth(dmft index) was 3.47 in 3-year-olds, 5.41 in 4-year-olds, and 6.01 in 5-year-olds. 2. The caries prevalence of children in this study was higher than those of other researches in past and in other cities. 3. The caries-experienced teeth in order in 5-year-olds were as follows : mandibular 2nd primary molar, mandibular 1st primary molar, maxillary 2nd primary molar, maxillary primary central incisor and maxillary 1st primary molar. 4. The pattern of dental caries development was different between the incisors and molars. The prevalent surface of caries was proximal surface in primary incisors, but occlusal surface in primary molars.

Saliva is obviously potential medium to protect the dental caries by not only physical clearing effect, but aggregating action of protein with bacteria. Nevertheless, we still do not understand how the dental caries occur and what brings the individual difference in caries prevalence. In the regards of dental caries prevalence, we hypothesized that the composition of salivary protein might be different from caries susceptible group to caries resistant group. The purposes of this experiment were focused on the molecular analysis of salivary proteins from the subjects who were involved in multiple caries. Electrophoretic analysis was done on the whole saliva collected from the children with and without multiple caries. We found 86.2% of subjects with multiple caries has approximately 120 KDa protein band while 30.4% in the healthy subjects. And the concentration of the total protein on the subjects with multiple caries is significantly higher than that of the healthy group. However, it turned out that the difference of the salivary composition does not affect the bacterial adhesion to hydroxyapatite bead. With regards of enzymes in saliva, the activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and lactate dehydrogenase does not have any significant difference between both groups. However, the concentrations of $Na^+\;and\;Cl^-$ in saliva from multiple caries group is higher than that of the control group. Taken all together, it may be concluded that 120 KDa protein in saliva may be associated with the process of dental caries, also the high concentration of protein and $Na^+,\;Cl^-$ in saliva may be linked to dental caries development as a cofactors.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the dental caries experience in disabled people according to the handicapped types in Korea. This study subjects based on the national disabled survey 2004 were collected by designed cluster sampling and interviewed with structured questionnaire in order to examine dental caries and sociodemographic status. The subjects were attending the special schools and private or public welfare institutions for crippled disorder, encephalopathy disorder, mental retardation, visual disturbance, and hearing defect. Oral examination was conducted by 13 trained dentists. 1,307 of handicapped people were finally analysed. ANOVA and Cochran-Mantel-Hanzel analysis were adapted for statistical analysis. The results were as follows; Dental caries prevalence, DMFT(Decayed, missing, filled teeth), and DMFS(Decayed, missing, filled surfaces) of disabled people were higher in crippled disorder and mental retardation than the others. There were significant differences in dental caries prevalence, DMFT, and DMFS according to the disabled. DMFT was significantly higher than national population in every age group except in 12-14 year-old and more than 35 group. It was likely that the experience level of dental caries was significantly different according to the handicapped types in Korea and higher than the people without handicap.
Dental caries has been widely prevalent with presence of cavitation on teeth. For the last several decades, the prevalence of dental caries in developed countries has rapidly decreased so there has been needed a new and detailed diagnostic guideline to differentiate the severity of dental caries, especially for early status of caries. The cariology specifically requires the development of an integrated definition of dental caries and uniform systems for measuring the caries process in the fields of clinical diagnosis and treatment, epidemiological researches, and dental education and so forth. The international Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) optically measures the enamel surface changes and potential histological depth of carious lesions by relying on surface characteristics of teeth. ICDAS is a visual classification system that was developed to diagnose the subtle changes of enamel surface, predict the progress direction of early caries, allow standardized data collection in relation to caries in different settings, and to enable better comparison of oral health between countries worldwide and research studies.
