  • In rare cases, levoatrial cardinal vein may occur as an isolated condition without additional congenital anomalies. Depending on the direction and flow of the shunt, this pathology may produce symptoms; alternatively, it may be asymptomatic, as in the case presented in this study. In asymptomatic cases, complications, such as paradoxical embolism and brain abscess, can arise later. In the 11-year-old patient whose case is presented here, the levoatrial cardinal vein was asymptomatic and incidentally detected. The percutaneous closure method was applied first. However, by 16 hours after the procedure, the occluder device had embolized to the iliac artery. Emergency surgery was performed; first, the occluder device was removed, and levoatrial cardinal vein ligation was then performed via a mini-thoracotomy. The symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment modalities of isolated levoatrial cardinal vein are discussed in the context of this case described herein.

  • The aim of this study is to consider the meaning of the traditional dwelling house and the cardinal points. The cardinal points is a complex concept of the body-scheme direction and celestial direction. This paper explains the meanings of the traditional dwelling house under the following three subtitles; dwelling as the image of the cosmos; dwelling as the center of the world; dwelling as the subjective space. The traditional dwellings have the prominent characteristic of the image of the cosmos and the center of the world which is regarded the human and the architecture as the microcosmos, and which communicates the heaven with the earth. The traditional dwellings which aims to harmonize the human with the nature have the subjective and meaningful space which articulates the nature through the self-systematization.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to suggest the standard of the direction sign on the pendant switch of overhead cranes which can reduce human errors in control. Background: A great number of crane accidents occur in industries. One of the major causes of the accidents is the mistake in the control of cranes by confusing the orientation of crane movements. Nevertheless, three different direction sign styles, 'East, West, South, North (EWSN)', 'Forward, Backward, Left, Right (FBLR)', and arrows for four directions are used without standardization. Method: An overhead crane simulator was installed for a laboratory experiment. It could move along six directions by the control of a pendant switch. 90 participants were evenly assigned to the three different conditions of direction sign styles. The participants were asked to control the pendant switch according to the continuously appearing 16 direction signs on a monitor ahead. The participants were allowed to refer an orientation sign board on the ceiling representing correct movement directions of the overhead crane simulator. Results: The direction sign style, 'EWSN', showed statistically significant better performance in task completion time and number of errors than the other sign styles. The direction sign style, 'EWSN', adopting the cardinal direction system, made the participants clear in direction controls after customizing to the crane movements. However, the direction sign styles, 'FBLR' and the arrows adopting the relative direction system made conflicts in direction controls due to the egocentric view of human. Conclusion: The direction sign style, 'EWSN', is the most appropriate for the standardization of the direction sign on the pendant switch of overhead cranes. Application: The results of this study can be applied to the standardization of direction sign in the legal notification on the safety certifications of crane manufacturing.

  • Many researchers are using the heterosis, heterobeltiosis and hybrid vigour over check parent value formulae to determine the hybrid vigour for animals, plants and silkworm breeding. These formulae are ideal for determine the hybrid vigour for the positive direction of single trait. It is difficult using these formulae for multiple traits. Suggested modification for cardinal formulae were made as well as suggestion new formula for determines hybrid vigour for multiple traits. Modifications of hybrid vigour were made to facilitate judgment of best hybrids under study for multiple traits. Nineteen local hybrids of mulberry silkworm were prepared for these investigations in addition the imported Bulgarian hybrid. Comparison between the cardinal and the modifications formulae were applied for thirteen economic characters. Nine positive and four negative direction characters were observed. Modified formulae make the judgment of heterobeltiosis, heterosis and hybrid vigour over check parent value very facilitate for positive and negative traits.

  • The topographic variables, which influence the precipitation phenomena, are classified by elevation (ELEV), slope (SLOPE), distance to sea (SEA), obstruction (OBST), barrier (BAR), roughness (SHIELD), extracted and analysed according to resolutions. This study is performed through 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 600 m, 800 m and 1,000 m based on 50 m DTM using TOVA (Topographic Variables Extraction Program). The result of a case study on Jeju weather station says that the variance according to resolution is generally less than that according to cardinal direction, but particularly SHIELD values and some cases for 600m resolution have a significant results.

  • It fuses into culture of the East and the West in use of color ; colors of five direction, which had been from the Five Phase Theory in East Asia. Formative ability of color fields in a formative early Oriental Medicine history as well. Color is a very important factor and a necessary step of visible diagnosis. As a human's body is maintained and alive under the control of spirit and spirit is stored by five viscera, so spirit expresses the change of five viscera and is reflected by color. Visible diagnosis consists of spirit, appearance, Qi and color and movement. The purpose of each visible diagnosis is that we would know states of essence, Qi and spirit in patient's body. To ancient Asia people 'to see' was a kind of insight to the object as a whole. Similarily the activity of seeing the human body was the integral part of making diagnosis of a patient. This was the cause that there was suggested the discussion of the Five color theory in Oriental Medicine as a counterpart to that of the 'Goethe for Zur Farbenlehrer'. The inspection of Oriental Medicine was not a simple gazing of the eye as a sense organ, but the total insight to the internal state of the patient. For that reason, the eye-perception in early Chinese medicine was the reading the signs of the internal body which had have not the visual form but the flux of the internal life.

  • Background: The consequences of falls are often debilitating, and prevention is important. In theory, the lower the center of mass (COM), the greater postural stability during standing, and a weight belt at the waist level may help to lower the COM and improve the standing balance. Objects: We examined how the limit of stability (LOS) was affected by the lowered center of mass with the weight belt. Methods: Twenty healthy individuals participated in the LOS test. After calculating each participant's COM, a weight belt was fastened ten centimeters below the COM. Trials were acquired with five weight belt conditions: 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% of body weight. Outcome measures included reaction time, movement velocity, endpoint excursion, maximum excursion, and directional control in 4 cardinal moving directions. Results: None of our outcome variables were associated with a weight belt (p > 0.075), but all of them were associated with moving direction (p < 0.01). On average, movement velocity of the COM and maximum excursion were 31% and 18% greater, respectively, in mediolateral than anteroposterior direction (5.4°/s vs. 4.1°/s; 97.5% vs. 82.6%). Conclusion: Our results suggest that postural stability was not affected by the weight-induced lowered COM, informing the development and improvement of balance training strategies.

  • AtoN is an acronym for aids to navigation that indicate the position or direction of navigable areas and obstructions. AtoN should be arranged in consideration of unfamiliar navigator's convenience when it is indicated as the limits of navigable areas. Several narrow channels exist on the SW coast of Korea owing to the geographical effect, and the lateral or cardinal marks by the IALA maritime buoyage system are arranged along the narrow channels. This is an actual case study that analyzed the AtoN's role for safety navigation after changes in the maritime traffic environment owing to aquarfarm's development on narrow channels in the Korean SW coast. The analysis results of 5 narrow channels indicated that certain marks did not function properly as lateral or cardinal marks owing to the aquarfarm's location on navigable areas. Therefore, the following were suggested to improve AtoN on narrow channels: changing the position of marks, installing aquafarm's marks, and expressing the aquafarm's position on the nautical chart.

  • KEPCO 765 kV Transmission Lines where seasonal winds intersect to the direction of the transmission line route cause aeolian complaints from residents near the transmission lines due to 1.5 times sub-conductors numbers and about 2 times of tower height comparing 345 kV transmission lines. To decrease the wind noise generation, KEPRI developed two countermeasures. One is to install the Spiral Rod on wired 765 kV Cardinal conductor. The other method is to wire the Low Noise conductor which has salient part on the surface.

  • We study a manuscript that includes 28 oriental constellations in the flags of barracks in Gangjin. According to the Joseon Chronicles, the constellation flags in the manuscript are thought to have originated from Seon-Pil Kim (金善弼) who first made 28 constellation flags for the barracks in 1878 during the Joseon Dynasty. Seon-Pil Kim was a commander and he used the 28 constellation flags for communications in a military camp. The flags also contain 28 animals and letter-like symbols with constellation maps. We examine the constellation maps in flags in terms of shapes and number of stars, and compare them with those of constellations in the Korean and Chinese star charts such as CheonSangYeolChaBunYaJiDo (天象列次分野之圖), Joseon-Butienge (朝鮮步天歌), Suzhou (蘇州) Star Chart, and Tang-Butiange (唐步天歌). Finally, we found that the shape of constellations in the flags might be similar to those in the Chinese Tang-Butienge. We also found several errors such as the shape, connecting pattern, and number of constellations drawn in the flags. It seems that the constellation flags were unofficially used in military camps in the late Joseon dynasty. Meanwhile, the 28 constellations are divided into four groups and each group has its own color and direction. We suppose that the constellation flags might represent the positions of military camps and each group of flags has their own color based on their cardinal points.
