Five specimens (839 - 1280 mm TL, Total length) of the dusky shark Carcharhinus obscurus, belonging to the family Carcharhinidae, were collected from the waters off Jejudo Island, Sinan, Namhae, Busan and Gangneung, Korea, during 2010-2019. Carcharhinus obscurus was similar to Carcharhinus brachyurus but was distinguished by the interdorsal ridge (present in C. obscurus vs. absent in C. brachyurus) and the shape of upper jaw teeth (broad in C. obscurus vs. narrow in C. brachyurus). In addition, 479 base-pair sequences in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of our two specimens corresponded to those of C. obscurus (genetic distance, 0.000-0.003), but clearly distinguished from those of the Korean C. brachyurus (genetic distance, 0.03). We adopted the Korean name "Heuk-sang-eo" for Carcharhinus obscurus, after Kim and Ryu (2017).

The spadenose shark, Scoliodon laticaudus, belongs to the family carcharhinidae was described as the first record from Korea based on a single specimen collected from the South Sea of Korea. The species is characterized by having a greatly depressed and trowel-shaped head, a depressed and long snout, triangular pectoral fins, and posterior tip of the first dorsal fin reaching the middle of pelvic fin. We propose a new Korean names of the genus Scoliodon and the species S. laticaudus as "Nab-jag-ju-dung-i-sang-eo sog" and "Nab-jag-ju-dung-i-sang-eo", respectively.

Greate white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, are found in almost all the temperate and tropical coastal waters around the world. There have been 19 appearances reported in Korean coastal waters since June 1996 and seven shark attacks have been reported. There are about 400 species of sharks in the world, and 41 species of them have been found in Korean coastal waters. Thirteen of them belong to the Carcharhinidae family, and five of them belong to the Squalidae family. Of these sharks, 15 species of them live off of the East coast, 18 species live off of the West coast, and the other 40 species are distributed around Jeju Island and the South coast. Eleven species of them, including the great white shark, live off of all the coastal waters of Korea.

To investigate the fishes of the Arafura Sea of Indonesia, fish specimens were collected by scientists on board Korean trawlers fishing in this region during June 1994 and March 1996. A total of 137 fish species were identified, of which 40 occurred in both 1994 and 1996. In cartilaginous fishes, fishes from the families Carcharhinidae and Dasyatididae were dominant in terms of number of species and in teleost fishes, dominant species were those from the families Engraulididae, Carangidae, Sciaenidae and Tetraodontidae. This study revealed that Sardinelia longiceps, Setipinna melanochir, Cypselurus hiraii, Podothecus sachi, Nemipterus aurora, Johnius grypotus, Moolgarda perusi were collected for the first time in the Arafura Sea.
