Creep Characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Surface Modified by Plasma Carburized/CrN Coating (복합처리(Carburized/CrN Coating)로 표면개질된 Ti-6Al-4V합금의 크리프 특성)

  • The effects of duplex-treatment of plasma carburization and CrN coating onto Ti-6Al-4V alloy on its creep properties were investigated by means of a constant stress creep tester. Applying duplex-treatment, specimens having an inner carburized layer of about $150{\mu}m$ in depth and outer CrN layer of about $7.5{\mu}m$ in thickness were prepared. The hardness of duplex-treatment surface was about 1,960 VHN. It also appeared that the duplex-treatment improved the roughness of the surface significantly; $Ra=0.045{\mu}m$ for treated alloy while $Ra=0.321{\mu}m$ for untreated alloy. The steady-state creep behaviors were investigated in a temperature range of $510{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ ($0.42{\sim}0.44T_m$) under an applied stress range of 200~275 MPa. The stress exponent, n, was derived assuming the power law creep behavior. The surface treatment showed a decrease in a value from 9.32 (untreated) to 8.79 (treated). Also the activation energy obtained from an Arrhenius plot increased from 238 to 257 kJ/mol.

Effects of Carburizing Process on Sliding wear Behavior of Carburized SCM420H Steel (침탄처리한 SCM420H의 미끄럼 마모 특성에 미치는 침탄 조건의 영향)

  • The effects of the carburizing process on the sliding wear behavior of SCM420H steel have been investigated. In particular, the effects of grain boundary corrosion observed in the surface layer after gas carburizing and the effects of hardness of the carburized cases after heat-treatment on the sliding wear properties were examined. Pin specimens carburized by two methods (gas carburizing and vacuum carburizing) were tempered at two temperatures of 180℃ and 400℃ after oil-quenching, respectively. Sliding wear tests were carried out against heattreated SKH51 steel at several sliding speeds using a pin-on-disc type test machine. As results, it can be found that there is no difference in the wear behavior between the pins carburized using two methods. This implies that the grain boundary corrosion that formed in the surface layer after gas carburizing has no effect on the sliding wear behavior of carburized SCM420H steels. Additionally, there is no significant difference in the wear behavior between carburized pins tempered at 400℃ and at 180℃ after oil-quenching, regardless of the carburizing method. This is because carburized pins tempered at 400℃ have a troostite structure, which exhibits higher tribochemical reactivity even though its hardness is lower than that of martensite structure. In this respect, it can be considered that good wear resistance of carburized cases is maintained at least until the effective case depth.

Friction-Wear Properties of Carburized SNCM (침탄처리한 Ni-Cr-Mo강의 마찰-마모특성)

  • In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.

  • In this research, The statistical characteristics of non-heated and nitro-carburized specimens are investigated under two stress levels (1.15 .sigma. $_{w}$ .leq. .sigma.$_{\alpha}$ .leq. 1.25 .sigma. $_{w}$). Seven specimens of each stress level are tested by rotary bending fatigue machine. The cycles about each crack length and crack propagation rate are used as statistical variagle of weibull distribution. By using concept of reliability function, reliable S-N formula of Nitro-Carburized specimen are gotten.ten.

The Improvement of SNCM220 Winding Shaft in Mechanical Properties by Heat Treatment (SNCM220 강 권축의 열처리를 통한 기계적성질 향상)

  • To find out the reason of fracture, specimens were made from the fractured winding shaft and the mechanical properties as well as their microstructures were investigated. Several heat treatments. including caburizing and tempering were carried out to improve the microstructure, mechanical properties, fatigue crack propagation and rotating bending fatigue characteristics. Through these experiments, following conclusions were obtained. (1) Carburized and tempered specimens showed greatly improved mechanical properties including impact energy, hardness and strength. (2) The fatigue strength of the carburized and tempered specimens increased more than twice than that of the original fractured winding shaft. (3) Crack propagation of the carburized and tempered specimens were faster than that of the original fractured speciens under the same △K. However, it is believed that, in the early stage, the fatigue crack initiation and growth for the carburized and tempered specimen is more difficult.

  • Due to their high strength and good wear resistance, nitro-carburizing materials have been used for many machine components. However, the nitro-carburizing materials are found to have one disadvantage ; that is, their strength and fatigue life show larger scatter than those of non-heated metals. In this paper, therfore, the statistical chracteristics of non-heated and nitro-carburized specimens for SCM415 are investi- gated under two different of stress levels 1.15 .sigma. /sub .omega. / .leq. / .sigma. / sub .alpha. / .leq. / 1.25 .sigma. /sub .omega. /. Seven specimens at each stress level are tested by using rotating bending fatigue tester. The relation between a crack length and fatigue cycles can be arranged for Weibull distribution, and S-N curve using 95% reliability function is obtalined for nitro-carburized specimen.

  • In the automobile and shipbuilding industries, various materials and components require superior surface strength, excellent wear resistance and good resistance to repeated loads. To improve the surface properties of the materials, various surface heat treatment methods are used, which include carburizing, nitriding, and so on. Among them, carburizing treatment is widely used for structural steels containing carbon. The effective carburizing thickness required for materials depends on the service environment and the size of the components. In general, however, there is a limit in evaluation of the surface properties with a standardized mechanical test method because the thickness or cross-sectional area of the carburized layer is limited. In this regard, the nanoindentation technique has lots of advantages, which can measure the mechanical properties of the material surface at the nano and micro scale. It is possible to understand the relationship between the microstructural change in the hardened layer by carburizing treatment and the mechanical properties. To be spread to practical applications at the industrial level, in this paper, the principle of the nanoindentation method is described with a representative application for analyzing the mechanical properties of the carburized material.

  • The gear was made of SNC815 case-carburized, quench hardened and tempered steel. The gears were failed far earlier than the expected service life used in the industrial site. Causes of the failed gear were analyzed by microstructure observation. By the SEM and micro structure examinations, the damaged surfaces had been weared and failed by fatigue. Through microscope observation on the damaged surface, it was found that the cause of failure was determined by external overloading and the initial stage of the damage was closely related to complex contact fatigue failure. The overload and contact fatigue contributed to the early failure cause.

  • The influence of acetylene flow rates on the carburizing behavior of an AISI 4115 steel in 1 ton-class mass production-type vacuum carburizing furnace has been studied through microstructure, carbon concentration, hardness analyses. The AISI 4115 steels were carburized with various flow rates (20, 32.7, 60 l/min) and locations in the furnace (top, center, bottom) at 950℃. The acetylene flow rate played an important role in controlling the carburizing properties of carburized samples, such as effective case depth and uniformity carburizing according to location in the furnace. At an acetylene flow rate of 20 l/min, the carburized samples had a shallow average hardened layer (0.645 mm) compared to the target hardening depth (1 mm) due to low carbon flux and spatial uniformity of carburization (17.8%) in the furnace. At a flow rate of 60 l/min, the carburized samples showed an average hardened layer (1.449 mm) deeper than the target hardening depth and had the spatial uniformity of carburization (98.8%). In particular, at a flow rate of 32.7 l/min, the carburized samples had an average hardened layer (1.13 mm) close to the target hardening depth and had the highest carburizing uniformity (99.1%). As a result, an appropriate flow rate of 32.7 l/min was derived to satisfy the target hardening depth and to have spatial uniform hardened layer in the furnace.

  • Failure cause of the fractured engine parts was analyzed by microstructural observation. These parts were failed far earlier than the expected service life. By the stereoscope and SEM examinations of the fractured surface, the fracture modes have been identified as wear and fatigue failure. From the observation of microstructure and microhardness measurements of the failed gears, the probable cause for failures are internal oxidation during using and retained austenite and carbide networks due to heat-treatment, respectively. These defected structures at near surface contributed to the wear and fatigue failure.
