Recently, the researches on the durability design of concrete structures have been studied. As the examples, models to evaluate the service life prediction of the structure have been developed. The purpose of this article is to develop the model for predicting remaining service life. The final aim is to provide the user time for repairing the concrete structures. In addition, it makes possible to maintain the concrete structure economically. 70 reservoirs out of the inland concrete structures were selected and concrete structures of their components were surveyed. Two methods were used for measuring carbonation; TG/DTA method and Phenolphtalein indicator and, the value of pH was measured by the pH meter, After deriving correlations of calcium carbonate and used year, duration from completion year to 2002, pH value, and concrete cover depth the model was developed for predicting remaining service life by measuring data as small as possible. The conventional models had been developed on the basis of experiment data obtained from the restricted lab environment like as carbon gas exposure. On the other hand this model was developed on the basis of measuring data obtained from the real field that the complex deterioration actions are occurred such as freezing and thawing, carbonation, steel corrosion, and so on. The reliability of the developed model will be evaluated high in this point and this model can help to maintain concrete structures economically by providing the manager time to repair the deteriorated concrete structures in site of facility management.

In the resent years, the early evaluation of concrete quality, construction and maintenance has been considered as all is of major concern due to the increase of loading and the degradation of structures related with time. This paper presents evaluation of structural safety performance using measured data of construction, on the basis of a field measurements for the prevention of unreliable concrete works. Measurements analyzed in this paper are early quality condition and performance assessment, serviceability performance by cracks and deflection, rating performance by loading, durability performance by chloride attack and carbonation. Thus, a quantitative assessment model of resistance capacity was developed here to meet the requirement for deteriorated concrete structures. The model focuses on damage mechanical of concrete structures deteriorated by initial damage factors for concrete quality and environment factors such as chloride and carbonation attacks. These results could provide useful information for concrete structures interested in design, construction and maintenance.

Permeability coefficient of concrete is a substantial key parameter for understanding the durability performance of concrete and its micro-structural densification. Many researches to deal with the issue have been accomplished, however, it is very rare to deal with the theoretical study on permeability coefficient in connection with carbonation of concrete and the effect of volumetric fraction of cement paste or aggregate on the permeability coefficient. The majority of these researches have not dealt with this issue combined with carbonation of concrete, although carbonation can significantly impact on the permeability coefficient of concrete. The purpose of this study is to establish a fundamental approach to compute the permeability coefficient of (non)carbonated concrete. When simulating micro-structural characteristics as a starting point for deriving a model for the permeability coefficient by the numerical simulation program for cementitious materials, HYMOSTRUC, a more realistic formulation can be achieved. For several compositions of cement pastes, the permeability coefficient is calculated with the analytical formulation, followed by a microstructure-based model. Emphasis is on the micro-structural changes and its effective change of the permeability coefficient of carbonated concrete. The results of micro-structural water permeability coefficient model will be compared with results achieved from permeability experiments.

Carbonation is one of the major detrimental factors to the reinforced concrete structures owing to penetration of atmospheric CO2 through the micro pores, thereby it reduces the durability of the concrete. The maintenance periods and cost for concrete according to the coefficient variation of different finishing materials is documented in literature. However, it is required to carry out the systematic and well planned studies. Therefore, keeping them in mind, surface repair was carried out to the carbonated concrete and the maintenance cost was calculated to measure the durability life after repair with different variable. The deterministic and probabilistic methods were applied for durability and repair cost of the concrete. In the existing deterministic model, the cost of repair materials increases significantly when the concrete structure reaches its service life. In present study using a stochastic model, the maintenance period and cost was evaluated. According to obtained results, there was no significant difference in the number of maintenance of the coefficient variation. The initial durability has a great influence on the maintenance time and cost of the structure. Unlike the deterministic model, the probabilistic cost estimating model reduces the number of maintenance to the target service life expectancy.

Several aspects influence corrosive processes in reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as environmental conditions, structural geometry and mechanical properties. Since these aspects present large randomnesses, probabilistic models allow a more accurate description of the corrosive phenomena. Besides, the definition of limit states in the reliability assessment requires a proper mechanical model. In this context, this study proposes a straightforward methodology for the mechanical-probabilistic modelling of RC structures subjected to reinforcements' corrosion. An improved damage approach is proposed to define the limit states for the probabilistic modelling, considering three main degradation phenomena: concrete cracking, rebar yielding and rebar corrosion caused either by chloride or carbonation mechanisms. The stochastic analysis is evaluated by the Monte Carlo simulation method due to the computational efficiency of the Lumped Damage Model for Corrosion (LDMC). The proposed mechanical-probabilistic methodology is implemented in a computational framework and applied to the analysis of a simply supported RC beam and a 2D RC frame. Curves illustrate the probability of failure evolution over a service life of 50 years. Moreover, the proposed model allows drawing the probability of failure map and then identifying the critical failure path for progressive collapse analysis. Collapse path changes caused by the corrosion phenomena are observed.

This study proposed more reasonable prediction models on compressive strength and carbonation of concrete structure and developed a more effective tunnel safety diagnosis and maintenance method through field application of the proposed prediction models. For this study, the Seoul Metro's Line 1 through Line 4 were selected as target structures because they were built more than 30 years ago and have accumulated numerous diagnosis and maintenance data for about 15 years. As a result of the analysis of compressive strength and carbonation, we were able to draw prediction models with accuracy of more than 80% and confirmed the prediction model's reliability by comparing it with the existing models. We've also confirmed field suitability of the prediction models by applying field, the average error of an estimate on compressive strength and carbonation depth was about 20%, which showed an accuracy of more than 80%. We developed a more effective maintenance method using durability prediction Map before field inspection. With the durability prediction Map, diagnostic engineers and structure managers can easily detect the vulnerable points, which might have failed to reach the standard of designed strength or have a high probability of corrosion due to carbonation, therefore, it is expected to make it possible for them to diagnose and maintain tunnels more effectively and efficiently.
Utilization of supplementary cementing materials (SCM) by the cement industry, as a highly promising solution of sustainable cement development aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, necessitates a more thorough evaluation of these types of materials on concrete durability. In this study a comparative assessment of the effect of SCM on concrete durability, of every cement type as defined in the European Standard EN 197-1 is taking place, using a software tool, based on proven predictive models (according to performance-related methods for assessing durability) developed and wide-validated for the estimation of concrete service life when designing for durability under harsh environments. The effect of Type II additives (fly ash, silica fume) on CEM I type of cement, as well as the effect of every Portland-composite type of cement (and others) are evaluated in terms of their performance in carbonation and chloride exposure, for a service life of 50 years. The main aim is to portray a unified and comprehensive evaluation of the efficiency of SCM in order to create the basis for future consideration of more types of cement to enter the production line in industry.

In the field of architecture, concrete and steel bars are the most common and popular combinations. The relationship between the two in a structure is a complementary good that increases in utility when consuming both materials at the same time. However, the combination of the two, which has been perceived as semi-permanent, often faces repairs or reconstruction without its lifespan reaching decades. There are a number of deterioration factors at work for the reason for this phenomenon. Among them, the neutralization of concrete in particular refers to the process in which calcium hydroxide inside concrete reacts with carbon dioxide and loses alkalinity, which creates a corrosive environment for rebars inside concrete, causing serious damage to concrete. In this study, we intend to use a multi-physical analysis program using finite element analysis method to analyze the degree of carbonation according to the internal temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide in concrete, thereby contributing to the prediction of long-term neutralization of concrete and the research related to measures for neutralization of concrete.

The objectives of this paper were to obtain the fundamental data to analyze the causes of deterioration of 39 freeway concrete viaducts in Seoul metropolitan area. To investigate the degree of concrete deterioration, carbonation depth, soluble chloride concentration in hardened concrete and half-cell potentials of reinforcement were measured. The number of structures which carbonation depth penetrates to reinforcement was 25% of total. The model of carbonation .ate was induced to 3.92 $\sqrt{t}$, which was 5% faster than 3.727 $\sqrt{t}$ assumed 60% water-cement ratio, R=1 in that of kishitani. After measuring chloride concentration in concrete, it was concluded that about 24% of all readings on samples from concrete exceed the critical content to minimize the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. About 31% of the freeway viaducts structures had a value lower than -350mV(vs. CSE), so it could conclude that the excessive chloride concentration was the major cause of reinforcement corrosion. Among the structures which measured half-cell potentials less than -350mV, about 50% exceeds the maximum acceptable limit of chloride concentration.
